The Freeway Killer was a collective epithet given by the media and the police to what the media initially believed was a single serial killer claiming young male victims, predominantly in California during the 1970s and early 1980s, and who often discarded the victims' bodies alongside freeways.
However, there turned out to be multiple Freeway Killers who operated independently of each other but just happened to select similar victims from similar locations.

Looking out of the train window, a witness saw a large man striking a young woman, then forcing both his hands on her shoulders so she couldn’t get back up. The witness opened the train window and heard the young woman screaming: “Please, don’t! Please don’t!” The train passenger shouted for the attacker to stop, but the train was already moving. By the time police arrived at the scene, there was no trace of the crime. Then, three days later they found Carmen’s body. For years the case that was witnessed by multiple train passengers remained unsolved, but thanks to the determination of a prosecutor and a cold case team – it was solved 40 years later.

This posed a tremendous threat to organised crime groups, as well as corrupt police officers. On the morning of Thursday, 9th May 1985, 36-year-old Chris Flannery left his apartment building in the heart of Sydney’s CBD and was never seen or heard from again.

At first glance, Melissa Ann Shepard looked like a sweet and charming older lady seeking companionship after the tragic death of her husband. With her rosy cheeks, spectacles and overall harmless appearance, Melissa didn't exactly seem like the type of woman you should be afraid of. But appearances can be deceiving, as Melissa wouldn’t stop at anything to get what she wanted: money.

Hmm, that ending feels a bit victim-blamey &"Poor Ruben"-ish to me. Too much empathy for a man's decision to kill a woman. Earlier in the episode it's noted how he showed signs of psychopathy, yet it ends with pity almost excusing his inexcusable actions. Beatriz"s Mother's empathy for Ruben & his family, & understanding what makes men kill women with such frequency is one thing, excusing murderous behaviour is something else & I'm not sure they got the balance with that ending...
🎊great to see you back 🎉💙🩵EXCITED
Guys, you've been gone for a year - maybe asking people to pledge themselves to you shouldn't be the very first thing you talk about.
I'm so sad, I'm almost done with this podcast. What happened??? This podcast really grew on me and now there are no new episodes 😭😭😭
They're back! 😄
sounds like mental illness to me. listening to this late, but something like this just happened where I used to live, and the guy was found dead in the middle of nowhere years later.
The company I work for also went through this, and it's so crazy to hear all of the same issues. It's a great podcast, but the narrator sounds like she is reading a kids' book with all of the inflections and dramatic tonality. Just talk to me like a normal human being!
This is fine, but if you really want more information on this mystery, listen to the 'Death in Ice Valley' podcast. That one is very thorough.
"We will probably never know" is a huge understatement. We will NEVER know. Everyone is dead, and forensics can only answer so much.
I hope this family gets a resolution soon, but PLEASE!! stop releasing balloons to remember your beautiful daughter!! Plant flowers, release butterflies, blow bubbles, visit long-term care people in s hospital in her memory, plant a tree, there are so many other things you can do besides an empty gesture that is equivalent to littering. Those balloons do not go up to your heaven. They come down on mine.
It's Gowda, not Gooda.
no justice
yikes.
What does someone look like that is harboring a dark secret of a double life?? If they are living a double life, they look completely normal. You never know what is in someone else's brain. #TrueCrime #secretlife
This is the saddest story of narcissistic behavior. All of these people paid the price for this man's lies and deceit.
This podcast is really good and I love the detail, but the opening music has to go, it's just terrible!
Is Kraft's DNA in the system? Maybe if some of the evidence from other murders can be tested, you can find the answer for other victims. His level of torture is despicable and I can't imagine what those poor men endured.
This is up there with one of the best crime podcasts.
THE GIRL WAS 13?!!!! All these theories that include a sexual relationship are offensive. It’s rape. I know some cultures and traditions are different, I don’t want to ruin the case if you read comments before listening but the prosecutor saying “they caught the girl in a compromising sexual position with ___” is disgusting.
always wondered if this woman was not necessarily European but maybe middle eastern. I don't understand how espionage works but would "they" on either side have chosen someone who stood out this much and was so memorable. a Middle Eastern person of royal or noble descent could have ways and means, and allies, and very real reasons to flee and hide.
