It wasn't until the nineteenth century that it occurred to people that cemeteries could make great parks. A movement carried over from France and swept the nation and garden cemeteries were founded in every state. These became gathering places for family picnics and settings for long, peaceful walks enveloped in the shade of countless varieties of trees. Several of these cemeteries are not as peaceful as they could be, with spirits roaming about after dusk. In this episode, we share the history and hauntings of cemeteries in Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Mississippi, Indiana and Colorado. The Moment in Oddity features the Tower of London Hand and This Month in History features ANZAC Day. Ep. 533 - Fort Riley

2024-04-1138:24

Fort Riley sits on the north bank of the Kansas River near Junction City in Kansas. The military installation has a history that stretches back more than 150 years. Early on, the soldiers' missions were to protect the overland trails that settlers were using to move west. Eventually, they protected the railways being built. The fort would eventually become important in training the cavalry and served as a training center for every major war. Today, it still is a working base with several museums dedicated to its history. Many locations reputedly have some strange things happening. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of Fort Riley! The Moment in Oddity features the Rock and Roll Granny and This Month in History features the birth of Washington Irving. The Plains of Abraham have known death. This is a historic area inside Battlefields Park in Quebec City, Canada. Before the park, this was a place few would wander as it had a reputation for being a hiding place for criminals. Then it became a spot for executions to be carried out. And that is why there is a female ghost that roams the Plains of Abraham. Everyone calls her La Corriveau. Kelly and Diane return to the Lord Milner Hotel in South Africa! On the surface, the Lord Milner Hotel appears to be a mash-up of old Victorian London and a medieval castle. Hurricane Mills Rural Historic District is the name of Loretta Lynn's ranch in Tennessee. This is a large 3500-acre property that is basically its own little village. Kelly and Diane return to Alcatraz, infamously nicknamed The Rock, and present the history and hauntings of this location that lies about 1.5 miles off the shores of San Francisco, California. Some of the most notorious criminals in American history were sent to the prison built on this island because of the impossibility of escape. Many desperate souls wiled away their lives on Alcatraz Island and many of those souls seemed to have stayed. Edgar Allan Poe Redux

Edgar Allan Poe Redux

2024-03-0541:05

Edgar Allan Poe's life is a study in tragedy. And like many of us, he kept no diary and had few close friends, so putting together a map of his life can be cumbersome. He was one of the greatest writers of all time, able to cross all genres. Poe even created a couple of them. But his life and work wasn't celebrated until long after he was dead. And his death has always been cloaked in mystery. Perhaps that is why his spirit is at unrest and reputedly haunts various locations connected to his life. Dengler wrote the book "The Minersville Mansion" after spending time investigating the house. Superman is a beloved comicbook hero. He's all about truth and justice. Clark Kent, his alter ego, is a lovable nerd. Filling his shoes isn't easy, but George Reeves managed to do it and he did it well. But not because his own life reflected the ideal that Superman exuded. Reeves' life was complicated. And it came to an abrupt end when he was just 45-years-old in 1959. The death of George Reeves is a controversial topic. The coroner’s report ruled that the final results indicated that Reeves had committed suicide. Many people do not agree with that assessment. Could this have been murder? And is that mystery possibly why George Reeves' spirit seems to be at unrest. The Moment in Oddity features Convict Baseball and This Month in History features the Daytona 500 Inaugural Race. At the base of Mount Fuji in Japan lies a forest that is 14 square miles in size and is referred to by some as the Sea of Trees. The forest's official name is Aokigahara Forest and has a reputation for being very quiet. That should make this area very peaceful, but it is actually pretty notorious. The forest has a reputation as a place people go to die by their own hand. Most people call this wooded area "The Suicide Forest." There are rumors that demons run the place. I like the content (so far) so I don't want to hear so much goo at the beginning! about 5 minutes of ad, website, non-topic related stuff at the beginning. I've jumped around and listened to a handful of these pods and they're seeming to be that way. please put a time point for topic start point so I can avoid all this stuff that I don't want to hear. thank goodness for a fast forward option.

I like the historical aspect of these podcasts but tend to tune out once they start talking about ghosts and apparitions. I find it funny how ppl always latch on to old asylums and prisons as being haunted just be ause they're spooky places. if ghosts were real, they'd be FAR more common, instead of merely hanging out in places like abandoned prisons and mental asylums. I mean how many people in history have died? lol billions and billions and billions. so if ghosts were real , we'd have far far more around than is currently discussed. I mean shouldn't every battlefield in history be crawling in ghosts? and not just the few places people "claim" to be haunted. I think the Fermi Paradox can be applied to this ghost thing pretty well.

Great listening! <3 another binge-friendly podcast! :D Still examining the catalog - NYC has a handful of haunted houses/ establishments. Some of the more interesting (uncanny/ spooky) stories are the ones concerning apparent time slips in history. Great Southern Mysteries and The Little Giant Book Of "True" Ghost Stories are two fun books to read and try to be accurate concerning names, locations and dates. 🤓 I'm glad I found this podcast (now the graveyard shift won't be so spooky..). it is said that the Rite-Aid @Astoria I work at is haunted by the spirit of an elderly man that had a heart attack and didn't survive while at the pharmacy check-out. It is also said that prior to the location becoming a Rite-Aid it was a morgue... this building has no windows - save the store entrance so it can get quite gloomy. - Andrew
