Huxley beautifully contrasts man’s natural state with the communal comfort he seems to be barreling after, and may one day achieve. With that said, he shies not from the violence of religion in action, nor from the tragedies of a truly meaningful life, nor from the irrefutable humility of even the broadest individual facing the hypnotized flesh of millions. While the rulers of civilized society use the reservation as a fear-festering tool of hate and submission, Huxley uses it to open the reader’s eyes to the importance of virtue, the beauty of a soul shaped by vicissitudes, and the interminable multiplication of possibility for man with humble grasp on the reigns of his soul, his gaze invariably fixed on the unattainable ideal. https://jeshuadnoel.wordpress.com/

Frankenstein is a tale with a contradictory presence. Recognized by many as the first science fiction novel, it treds boldly onto new ground, while proclaiming caution in the voice of a now-forgotten past. Simultaneously, Shelley’s story resonates with today’s readers, and rings with relevance in the hearts of would-be traditionalists, modern-day skeptics of the modern day itself. The passions of man lead him, in the pursuit of perfection and glory, instead into the dark recesses of his soul, and with guile turns his head from what is honorable and begs that his gut hunger for more than is perhaps meant to be possible. The curiosity of the human creature transforms him from humble, happy beast into god-with-a-lower-case-g, incapable by nature of fulfilling his deistic duties. This trial and failure seems to be the inescapable, undeniable destiny of man. Shelley suggests that we ought to stand in awe of the majesty of nature, find satisfaction in service, and develop an appreciation for the simple pleasures afforded to life as a human being. Shelley asks the reader to recognize the impossibility of intellectual satiation, and to take each careful step into the unknown with respect for the ultimate, intending only to understand and never to overcome.

Today we talk about the meteoric rise of Lil Pump, rap's "bored hedonism" pioneered by a tired Juicy J comeback and Gucci Mane's undying desire for another coupe. Many artists, such as Tyler The Creator, are addressing this problem, the distinct lack of comedy in modern hip-hop, but perhaps not in a meaningful way that will lead to sustainable change.

When authors explore the question of what it means to be human, their readers are encouraged to look at themselves, to find their purpose, metaphysical or otherwise. Such stories move us to question our place in the universe, our motives in the changes we try to make, and help us to better understand other people. Our souls cry out, demanding that to be human is more than to be homo-sapiens sapiens.
