For the final three seasons at UCLA, Chen has served as Associate Head Coach, and, prior to that, he served as Assistant Coach for three years. During Chen's six seasons on Martin's coaching staff, the Bruins registered a 149-28 record (.842) and reached the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championships five times. This past season, UCLA posted its third semifinal-round appearance of the stretch and totaled 30 wins for the first time in Martin's tenure.  The Bruins also collected four Pac-12 regular-season titles and three tournament trophies during Chen's time on staff. Chen got his start with the Bruins as a student manager in 2001, as he played a pivotal role in the organization and growth of Martin's annual on-campus summer camp while fulfilling necessary off-court duties. The Bruins captured the NCAA title in 2005, Chen's penultimate year in the role. Chen's jack-of-all-trades skillset resulted in his hiring as Director of Operations upon his graduation from UCLA in 2006. He handled logistics, travel, equipment and management of all home events, including ITA Kick-Off Weekend, NCAA Regionals and the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships. A fixture in the tennis community both at home and abroad, Chen currently serves on the board of directors for ITA and USTA Southern California. A busy summer 2017 saw Chen guide Team Southern California to the title at the USTA Boys National Team Championships in Champaign, Ill., before leading Team USA and the mixed doubles duo of Bruins Jada Hart and Logan Staggs to a bronze medal at the 29th Summer Universiade in Taipei. Chen briefly ventured into a role with Pure Sports Management in 2007, but maintained his ties to UCLA as head coach of its club tennis team. This episode is so special I can’t wait to share it with you! AS it is May, we are celebrating Asian American Heritage Month and interviewing some of the important people who have made an impact in the tennis world. The USTA Committee for Diversity and Inclusion has invited me to be the chairperson for the Asian American subcommittee with the focus of raising awareness of Asian Americans in Tennis. In this episode we get privilege of hearing from 2 time grand slam champion Vania King! A fixture on the WTA Tour for the last 15 years, King has won 16 WTA titles in her career—one in singles AT THE 2006 Bangkok TOURNAMENT and 15 in doubles, including two Grand Slam women’s doubles championships at Wimbledon and the US Open, both in 2010 with partner Yaroslava Shvedova. The 31-year-old Californian also reached the women’s doubles semifinals at the 2011 French Open and the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in 2012 and 2016, and she teamed with Marcelo Melo to reach the French Open mixed doubles final in 2009. In singles play, King has reached the third round of every Grand Slam except Wimbledon, where she advanced to the second round twice. She reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 50 in November 2006, just four months after turning pro, and she was ranked as high as No. 3 in the world in doubles in June 2011. King represented the U.S. in eight Fed Cup ties between 2006 and 2011. VANIA and I talked for over an hour and half and honestly I wish it was longer. Her openness and insights are really inspiring so I hope you love this conversation as much as I do! This is part one of the conversation.  Lets welcome Champion Vania King to the Tennispal Chronicles. ___________________________________________________ Tennis PAL Chronicles is a tennis podcast to feed your passion for the game! In this episode we revisit the first Instagram interview that I think happened when tennis was first canceled.  It’s the conversation between world number #1 Novak Djokovic and grand slam champion Stanislas Wawrinka. You really get a sense of how playful and fun they are together and how much respect they have for each other.   I love the insider locker room thoughts they share about playing grand slams and their nerves getting ready to take center court. They both discuss playing Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and I feel like it’s a conversation that could have only been shared in a time of COVID. I hope you enjoy this audio-only broadcast of their interview.  If you want to hear more content like this let us know on social @lovesetmatch and make sure to follow so we can connect!   Visit tennispal.com to download the tennis app everyone is talking about and access the show notes!  Send an email to pk@tennispal.com for more information. Download from iTunes here Thanks for recommending and listening!
