Dan Klein (Facebook, LinkedIn) is the CEO and co-founder of Tiesta Tea (Facebook, Twitter). He is remarkably positive and optimistic, which certainly are a few reasons for his success. He also surrounds himself with a great team and strives for continuous improvement and innovation, fighting against complacency.I had the good fortune of meeting Dan not long after I was flipping through the Crain’s Chicago list of 20 in their 20’s in 2018, and we met at a time when I was in the midst of mulling over my own plans of launching a start-up, which I subsequently did (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter) – so this conversation was especially meaningful for me.Tiesta Tea was started with the mission of creating functional loose leaf tea blends that were affordable, accessible and understandable, and can now be found in over 8000 stores including Costco, Safeway, Albertsons, H-E-B and Target, and also on their website at tiestatea.com as well as on Amazon. The company has been recognized by Inc, Forbes, BevNet, World Tea News, Fresh Cup Magazine, Beverage Daily, ABC, FOX, Crain’s and many more for their advances in bringing great loose leaf tea to the masses and also their direct ways of giving back. Dan has raised multiple rounds of funding for Tiesta Tea to date, and has been covered all over the media, including Inc. Magazine’s 30 under 30, Inc’s fastest growing companies in 2017 and Inc.'s Top Workplaces of 2018.Enjoy! Subscribe, Rate, and Review: Apple Podcast, Google Play, or StitcherFollow Tim on Social Media: Twitter LinkedIn InstagramFollow Journey View on Social Media: Twitter Facebook InstagramShow credits:Intro/outro music: Stephen Lynerd
I had the privilege to sit down with a couple of former college classmates of mine, 2 gents that I’m humbled to also call co-members of our college improv team from some 15 years ago.  Mike Ryskamp and Andy Allen. We’ve each had different journeys since then and perhaps most notable is that they continued to perform improv after graduation, whereas I did not. Oh, and they are also still extremely hilarious, while I’ve spent the last 12+ years as an accountant. I’ll leave that one there. And finally, they are currently celebrating their 10th season with their improv group, Pop Scholars, along with the other 2 members Dave Lyzenga and Matt Sterenberg.  These guys are incredible at what they do and after listening for just a few minutes I think you’ll agree. Mike, Andy and I talk about a variety of things including 4-man bikes, blanking on stage and how life is one giant improv scene. It is easy to see how great a tool improv is for life, but also how it serves as a powerful metaphor. You only get better, and it only gets easier after lots of effort, various failures, and hopeful persistence. You can find out more about these guys individually on Twitter and Facebook, and also at popscholars.com – which is where you’ll also find their show schedule. So, go and check them out… but before you do that, please enjoy my conversation with one half of the Pop Scholars, Mike Ryskamp and Andy Allen.Enjoy! Subscribe, Rate, and Review: Apple Podcast, Google Play, or StitcherFollow Tim on Social Media: Twitter LinkedIn InstagramFollow Journey View on Social Media: Twitter Facebook InstagramShow credits:Intro/outro music: Stephen Lynerd

Sean continuously works with, and consults for the AICPA and several professional training organizations in the creation and delivery of blockchain and cryptocurrency related content. He is currently under contract to publish two full length books focusing on blockchain applications for financial services and other industry sectors. And in 2018 he was selected by CPA Practice Advisor as one of the 40 Under 40 in the accounting profession – for the 2nd year in a row.If you haven’t guessed it yet, Dr. Sean and I discuss blockchain.  Or, at least we try… Enjoy! Subscribe, Rate, and Review: Apple Podcast, Google Play, or StitcherFollow Tim on Social Media: Twitter LinkedIn InstagramFollow Journey View on Social Media: Twitter Facebook InstagramShow credits:Intro/outro music: Stephen Lynerd
Daniel Burrus (Twitter, LinkedIn) is considered one of the world’s leading futurists on global trends and innovation. The New York Times has referred to him as one of the top three business gurus in the highest demand as a speaker. He has been the featured subject of several PBS television specials and has appeared on programs such as CNN, Fox Business, and Bloomberg, and is quoted in, and writes for, a variety of publications, including Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Fortune, and Forbes. And as if that weren’t enough, Dan is a New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-selling author, having written 7 books. In fact, he wants you to have a hard cover copy of his newest book, The Anticipatory Organization. Visit TheAOBook.com to check out the book and get your free copy! Dan and I cover a variety of topics in this conversation, including the power of certainty. That is, the power of gaining more and more certainty in a seemingly uncertain world. In fact, that’s the mission of his company Burrus Research, for which he serves as CEO. Enjoy! Subscribe, Rate, and Review: Apple Podcast, Google Play, or Stitcher. Alex Leonowicz (Instagram, LinkedIn) is a PIONEER helping to forge the path through many murky areas of our legal system, and maybe the murkiest of all, the world of Cannabis. As popular opinion has been shifting over recent years as it relates to Cannabis, it has brought about many challenges from a legal perspective as people and organizations attempt to toe the line between what/when/where/how to gain an edge in this world while also remaining legal amongst contradicting laws. Alex helps his clients do just that. As an attorney, he is an expert, though, in many areas of law. But perhaps the most impressive thing about him is his ability to not only see opportunities early, but maybe more importantly is his courage and confidence to seize them. Enjoy! #9: How to Say YES!

#9: How to Say YES!

2018-09-1033:07

How do you maintain control over your most precious resource? After spending years somewhat aimlessly and unintentionally committing to this obligation or that, I finally decided enough was enough. Struggling with saying no to people out of fear of disappointing, I ultimately flipped things around. Rather than struggling with saying no, we should actually struggle with saying yes! Besides, we only have so many minutes granted to us, we shouldn’t be so frivolous and hasty with any of them. Enjoy this episode where I highlight the 9 questions I ask myself when considering whether to accept or respectfully decline various demands on my time. The 9 questions fit nicely, and evenly, into 3 different categories: How does it FEEL? 1. Do I want to do it? 2. What is the feeling state I could expect from this? 3. Will I have foreseeably have the opportunity again? Do I need to do it, or is there an alternative? How does it FIT? 4. What is the realistic time commitment? 5. Is there a clear end? 6. What will I remove or replace? How does it FURTHER? 7. What transferrable skills will I acquire? 8. What perspective will I gain and will I be stretched or challenged? 9. Will it build my network? Let these questions be a tool to help guide you on the journey. There is arguably nothing more important than how you spend your time – don’t let others decide this for you. Don’t be ruled by a lack of security or clarity of your purpose in this life and on this earth. Don’t ignore the value of each moment, each hour you’ve been given. You’ve got one life: you don’t know when it’ll end but you can give it a boost right now by being more intentional over how you spend your time. The days are long, but the years are short. Spend wisely. Subscribe, Rate, and Review: Apple Podcast, Google Play, or Stitcher. Gretchen Pisano’s superpower (one of them, at least) is asking powerful questions. But her questions are only as powerful as you allow – do yourself a favor and allow yourself to be challenged today. Gretchen (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) is founder and CEO of pLink Leadership (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn) – pLink = Positivity Link – which strives to transform the way people work and lead to enable positive change in the world. She works with some of the most recognizable names in business, helping them pioneer a new kind of leadership, all the while leading her own organization consisting of a team of people driving toward a common goal – impacting lives that will, in turn, impact the world. As she states during our conversation, “…we all know that the world of work can be so much better than it is, we’re just not sure what to do about it.” She helps us figure that out. Among other things, in this episode we discuss the critical role positive emotion plays in a flourishing life, and how we can have more of it by intentionally building it into our days and weeks. Having experienced the impact personally, I can testify life continues to improve with the addition of more and more positive emotion. Why not give it a try? What do you have to gain? Enjoy! Ryan Roff (Facebook, LinkedIn) is the CEO and co-owner of BoldSocks (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn). These socks are the real deal. With options ranging from professional and sophisticated to goofy and punny, they are well-designed and high quality – especially their own brand Statement Sockwear. I even picked up a few pair for Tom Hood, who was on the first episode of the Journey View podcast – this is a guy who takes his sock game seriously, and he loved the Statement Sockwear designs. But as good as the socks are, arguably that’s not the most impressive thing about Bold Socks. It’s their positive social impact. For every pair of Statement Sockwear socks sold, the Company gives back – to the tune of 100 days of clean water to people who desperately need it. To date, this still young brand has provided over 25 million days of clean water, and growing. This is more than a business, this is a movement. Ryan and I discuss a variety of things, including how to develop rhythm and balance in your life, soul-keeping trips, and the really important topics like skinless chicken breasts and adaptable salsa containers, among others. Boundlessly energetic, Scott Kitun (follow him on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or Instagram) knows how to light a fire – and whether you find yourself agreeing with him or not, you will be challenged. The energy and passion he possesses – coupled with the design thinking framework he employs – is what has largely driven his success to date. As CEO of Technori (follow them on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram), Scott has earned a reputation for helping tech start-ups find their way. Particularly through showcasing these start-ups on stage at one of Technori’s monthly live shows in venues across the country including Chicago, San Francisco, New York, and Detroit, among others. And by featuring tech founders on the Technori Podcast, which also airs on WGN Radio. There are multiple other ways Scott and Technori help the community, the most recent of which is by blazing a new path for how start-up investing is done, which we talk a lot about in this episode. It’s hard to put a label on Scott, which is exactly where he likes to be. Business man, futurist, media entrepreneur, other? Yes, yes, yes and yes. In this episode we explore the journey thus far, how he discovered that his perceived “learning disability” was actually a thinking framework taught in the best schools in the country, and of course the tech world, tech investing and the like. Author, business owner, wife and mother, Courtenay (Facebook and Instagram) takes us through the details of the year that turned her world upside down. Jude Rake is the leader’s leader. This means that not only would emerging leaders benefit from his experience and coaching, but seasoned leaders profit from his wisdom as much or more. In this episode, I sit down with Jude (@juderake on LinkedIn and @jdrgrowth on Twitter), and we explore many areas, including the superpower of curiosity, key practices for self-improvement, how to be a bad boss (and how to learn from one), nature vs. nurture, and of course leadership. Jude is the founder and CEO of JDR Growth Partners, a leadership consulting firm, and has been recognized for leadership, creativity, and marketing excellence with Clio, Mobius, and Effie awards, and he has received the Burnham award for innovation. He was also named a Top 100 marketer twice by Advertising Age. Jude’s career has spanned decades where he has served in critical roles in some of the most well-known companies and brands in the world, including SC Johnson, Pepsi, and Clorox, among others. This career has taken him around the globe allowing him to accumulate a wealth of experience and knowledge along the way – experience and knowledge coupled with deliberate practice has translated into deep insight and wisdom. He now shares this wisdom with his clients, friends, family, as well as audiences around the country through his keynotes about leadership, specifically servant leadership. Fortunately for us he’s memorialized his learnings and experiences surrounding servant leadership in his book: The Bridge to Growth. Do yourself a favor and check that out. Is his name “Max” or is it “Howie”? The answer is yes. In this episode, I sit down with Howard (Howie) Max Sieplinga, the namesake of his company Howie’s Hockey Tape (@howieshockeytape on Instagram, @hockeytape on Twitter, and @howieshockey on Facebook), which has taken the hockey world by storm over the past decade-plus as the trusted provider for hockey tape (obviously) and other gear. An avid hockey player since he was a wee boy, Max got tired of sub-par tape in the marketplace during his high school years and sought a better product. And that’s where his entrepreneurial chops began to manifest. While not even old enough to vote, Max started a business aimed to give respect to perhaps the most underappreciated tool in the game – tape – by focusing on quality. Quality is a point of pride and responsibility for Max and his team as they consistently demonstrate a love and kinship with their team – their customers, pro shops, retailers – really anyone committed to the hockey community. And this can be seen in the advocacy and support of the organization: Howie’s has garnered a social media following of which most brands could only dream! After you listen to this episode, you’ll realize why. This guy is a hockey player first and foremost. In fact, everyone who works there is, too! It’s no wonder Howie’s has retained such a faithful fan base. Max and I discuss many topics, including business, building a brand, Instagram, golf, competition, board games and cutting classes in high school, and I think you’re going to love his energy and passion. One of only 100 LinkedIn influencers, Tom Hood (@tomhood on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram) is one of the most respected thinkers and speakers in the world of business. He possesses a remarkable ability to connect dots, and maybe even more enviable the skill to help others do the same. As President and CEO of the Business Learning Institute and the MACPA, Tom strives to help others capitalize on disruption. With seemingly boundless energy and contagious positivity, Tom is a highly sought-after keynote speaker and strategic facilitator, as well as one of the world’s most relevant thought leaders. Tom is an avid user of Evernote, which he leverages relentlessly during his content curation practices. In this episode, we explore the journey he has taken to date, and how and why it is more important now than ever to clearly anticipate the future. As Tom says (paraphrased), those who will be the winners in this new world will be the ones who learn faster than the rate of change and the rate of their competition: L > C2. Enjoy! Greetings and welcome to the Journey View Podcast. I’m Tim Jipping and invite you to take a journey with me. This project started because one day, I had discovered there was something missing… for years, specifically an outlet for creativity. As a child and throughout my college years, creativity was regularly present and there had always been an outlet for it – it was just there, I never had to be intentional or “remember” to practice creativity. But that slowly dissipated after entering the business world and corporate America. I found that I’m not alone in this. Getting caught up chasing the next thing, and not fully enjoying the ride that gets you there. But that’s where life happens, the journey – that IS life. So I sought out an activity that could provide a creative outlet I’ve been missing, enjoying the journey along the way and perhaps even help others do the same. Granted, creating a podcast wasn’t the first or obvious option when contemplating how to scratch the itch, but in hindsight it seems like a good fit. Being trained as an accountant and working as a CPA for well over a decade, when you boil it down, my professional life has essentially consisted of asking questions in order to tell a story. Why not leverage those skills to tell the stories of fascinating people in an effort to learn from them and help us along the way? I’ve always had a bent toward personal development. And one of the most effective avenues I’ve found for my own development is learning through the mistakes and successes of others. There’s something powerful about hearing the stories of people who seemingly may have nothing in common with me – say, an aerospace engineer, or a basketball coach, or an opera singer – and being able to take some of the most unlikely nuggets and apply them to my own situation or circumstance. It shouldn’t work – but it does. Please accept this invitation to take the journey with me and be in the room listening in on conversations I have with remarkable people – to learn, to grow, to be inspired and entertained. You might be surprised in what you’ll get out of it. And make sure you subscribe to the podcast so you don’t miss a beat. You can also follow the Journey View on twitter, facebook, and Instagram to see what we’re up to. Please enjoy the following highlights from the first round of episodes coming your way. Through wide-ranging discussions and guests, you’ll get a taste of what’s to come. So sit back, and enjoy the view.
