In this episode, I dive into a crucial lesson for creators and entrepreneurs alike: the importance of focusing on the core product above all else. Using the iconic example of George Lucas and "Star Wars," I explore how Lucas understood the fundamental necessity of crafting an exceptional film before delving into merchandising, video games, and other ancillary products. Too often, individuals and businesses put the cart before the horse, prioritizing marketing gimmicks or peripheral ventures over the quality of their primary offering. Through engaging anecdotes and insightful analysis, I uncover the wisdom of investing time, effort, and resources into perfecting the core product, whether it's a film, a service, or a tangible product. In this episode, I reflect upon the idea that as we get older, a lot of the questions we had as kids start to be answered (what job we'll have, where we'll live, etc). Crowdfunding can be challenging enough, especially when you're doing an all or nothing type of campaign where you need to achieve a minimum objective in order to receive any of the money pledged. But, there's something else to keep in mind when it comes to crowdfunding, which I certainly didn't know about or anticipate and it happened to me recently. Because of that experience, I wanted to share it with other filmmakers so they can be aware and prepare as necessary to deal with the possibilitiy. Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe! "Quiet On Set: The Dark Side Of Kids TV" is a docu-series that recently aired and has many people talking — for good reason. I recently finished up the series and after watching various reactions online, it got me thinking about all kinds of aspects. Much of them echo what many others have already shared, but this episode attempts to dive into new territory. The goal, in so much as there may be a goal, is to examine what brings about this culture, ask if the same culture exists elsewhere in kids TV, what can be done to prevent it, and so on. I did my best to articulate my thoughts. Please forgive me if I didn't express an idea in the most eloquent way and instead judge any ideas based on the spirit with which they were intended. Thank you and I look forward to your thoughts, too. Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe! Yours truly, Phil Svitek Filmmaker, author, podcaster & 360 Creative Coach http://philsvitek.com

For the past month, I've been juggling making sure our film's crowdfund was a success on top of everything else. That's quite a lot! But I managed thanks to a wonderful team, and even found time to do a major revision on the script. I share my process for that and share insights that may help other writers/filmmakers out there. In my younger days I'd get upset if things weren't going "according to plan." This of course caused me stress and translated to other people I was working with, lowering their work as well. As I've grown older, I've learned to have more grace and handle situations tactfully, as needed based on the circumstances at hand. This mini-episode shares some examples of how it's manifested itself in my work life. Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe! While I'm not a legal expert and I certainly advise you to always have a lawyer look over any contract you sign, I did want to share an overall piece of advice that has benefited me—whenever possible, look to make things as equal as possible within the language. For example, if there's a copyright clause, a confidentiality clause, etc then all those should apply to the client and you exactly the same. There shouldn't be more protective language for the client and yours be weak (aka minimal protections). I've seen contracts where I would be held so liable if I said anything negative about the client but none of that was in place to protect me from the client saying anything about me. That doesn't work for me and it doesn't have to work for you! Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe! In this thought-provoking episode, I delve into the wisdom of Tim Ferriss and how his unconventional approach to learning sparked a paradigm shift in my own journey. Inspired by Ferriss' mindset of investing in experiences rather than traditional education, I recount how I applied a similar philosophy when embarking on my first feature film endeavor. By adopting a mindset where failure equated to a valuable lesson rather than a loss, I embraced the opportunity to learn through action, resourcefulness, and resilience. Join me as I explore how this mindset transcends the realm of filmmaking, offering a blueprint for anyone seeking to pursue their passions and ventures with calculated risk and unwavering determination. Whether it's launching a business, mastering a new skill, or pursuing creative endeavors, the philosophy of investing in experiential learning is a transformative force waiting to be unleashed.
