Today more than ever we need to understand how policy affects us. We've teamed up for a cross over episode with Kriselle of Empowered in Color and her interview with Shaniyat Chowdhury who is running for Congress in NY-5 district against a 20-year incumbent.  We talk about his life growing up in Jamaica, Queens, poverty drafted into the Marines, journey into activism serving in the New York state assembly, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez's campaign, and ultimately running for office.  You might think politics is too much and rather avoid the topic but the best way to ensure America becomes a better place is by electing people who truly understand the realities of economic, racial, and social inequality. People like Shaniyat.  Thank you to Empowered in Color for this collaboration to get the word out.  You can learn more about Shaniyat and donate on his website at Shaniyat2020.com Follow Empowered in Color Podcast with Kriselle here You can find everyone on Instagram and Twitter as @EmpoweredInColor , @KriselleMG , and @Shaniyat2020 If you are in New York State you can request your absentee ballot to vote this primary HERE To support Basic Brown Nerds and keep us going join our monthly supporters & join our community here subscribe to our newsletter at basicbrownnerds.substack.com Follow & tag us on @BasicBrownNerds and @BasicBrownNerds

This week we chat with the amazing hype woman Monica. We talk dancing, Men Are Trash/ Women Are Trash Too stories, and how we all became friends. So who is Monica? Monica (she/her/hers) is an undocumented DACA recipient and works as a social worker in Sacramento, CA. She loves to travel and write/rant about social justice on and off social media. Our brown girl friendship began off of Instagram, or as we call it the tinder for friends where you can use the internet to find your tribe. While she was visiting she took NYC by storm! Bringing her #FridayDanceParty and letting us join in on the streets of NYC doing the #MonicaChallenge. She is what I like to call a professional hype woman. Always there to hype up and supports Latinx creators on and off the ‘gram. She doesn’t just post online talking about human rights but goes out and does the work. In addition to her day job, she is a published writer and self-identified Femme Persona. Listen in to this amazing human’s story.
