There’s been some big claims as of late that “any serious crossfit athletes should try keto.” We don’t quite buy this!
We break down the physiology behind ketogenic diets, and why they are NOT the same as a ‘low carb’ diet. We discuss the exact ketogenic studies they used to claim “greater fat loss, retention of 1RM strength, and refuelling of glycogen.”
One claim that may hold true is the improvement to inflammation and recovery on a ketogenic diet....don’t worry, we debated this for you too, and much more! If you like the nitty gritty details on exercise nutrition then you’ll dig this episode!

Sometimes less is more, and this holds particularly true in sports....and again, even more true in the sport of functional fitness and crossfit. Young and old athletes alike often train UNINTENTIONALLY and WITHOUT A PLAN, often doing extra volume that what is required and causing more harm than good.
What are we talking about? We are talking about causing burn out (both mental and physical), increasing risk of injury, disrespecting strength progressions and failing to make necessary sacrifices for 'growth'.
We also talk about how foods and general macronutrients should fluctuate based on time of season. For instance, fats higher in the OFF season to build and repair hormones, joints, and overall health...enjoy the episode!

This week we talk about my (Chett) ongoing experiment with the carnivore diet. I've completely removed all vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, wheat and breads, processed goods, drinks, everything! I share some of the profound benefits I've experienced after only ONE WEEK!
We also share some stories of other people reversing and even curing chronic illnesses with the carnivore diet, particularly those with autoimmune conditions. We will share how and why that is! We talk about HOW this way of eating can be beneficial. Interestingly, it has to do with the removal of many "plant toxins". These defence chemicals found within plants that can trigger inflammatory responses in humans!

ATTENTION! Will and Dalton are raising money for the 24 Hours of Heroes fund, an incredible cause that raises money for the WOUNDED WARRIORS CANADA charity.
Today on the podcast Will and Dalton from the PTCOFFEECAST join us! Will and Dalton are both PTs, and completed their training in physiotherapy school at Western University; a prestigious and highly competitive program. We dig into some techniques they use in their clinics to help athletes and individuals return to health and play. We talk about some unique challenges they face, and also discuss the importance of MINDSET around recovery. I know I've said this before but I really mean in now.....this is a mindblowing episode that you do not want to miss. We discuss so many 'popular concepts' of health & nutrition that just may shatter your existing paradigm.
The recent documentary on Netflix, the Game Changers, suggests that plant-based nutrition is the answer for athletes wishing to reach optimal performance, and is the answer for those seeking optimal health. In other words, they were not simply born or blessed with all of their skill, they put in 10 000 + hours as young kids honing their craft. "Can you write me a meal plan" or "can you write me a workout plan" are both questions we have struggled with....Can I write you one and make a quick buck? Sure. Should you follow it for the next year, or even for the next 4 months? In most cases, hell no! But this is a TOUGH point to get across.

This is a thought provoking episode! We take a little bit of a new perspective in this one and debate what makes a sport a sport! Is gaming, NASCAR, chess a sport?

We sat down with good friend Brett Welychka and discussed in detail his continued experiences with professional hockey. Brett played four seasons with the London Knights OHL Hockey Team, then moved onto Carleton University for 3 seasons. Last year, his spent time in the AHL and ECHL, and is now set to move onto new and exciting professional hockey opportunities. We talked about certain challenges along the way that all athletes can learn from, we talked about his challenges with concussions, particularly this last season. We get into a little bit of concussion pathology (what is going on in the brain after a concussion) and I (Chett) explain some of the shocking similarities to depression. We talk about developing a positive mindset for athletes, differences in training for crossfit vs. hockey and much more! Enjoy!

I’ve been exploring different fitness podcasts lately and *The Fitness Experiment* usually brings up great practical tips, but sometimes I still find myself wondering what tools are actually worth my time versus just hype.
