On this very funny episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, Steven Van Elk from the Wedding Photo Hangover Podcast drops by to discuss photo industry 'code words'. Code words? What code words? The photo industry has code words? You know, the things that photographers and people in the industry like to say when they really mean something else. For example, when photographers use the term "unphotogenic" to describe subjects they personally don't think are attractive. Or terms like "challenging" or *shudder* "vibes"... Tune in as Steven and I try to decode the photo industry vernacular... About My Guest "I moved to Chicago when I was 18 years old and started exploring my opportunities in the creative field. I didn’t know anyone so I knew it was the perfect opportunity to reinvent myself! As I continued my career in photography in a foreign country, many different opportunities started arising! One of the most important ones in my career, so far, was the Front Porch Project during the pandemic lockdown in 2020. I took this opportunity and created a project that, to this day, continues to create opportunities! I am happily married to my husband Travis and we are expecting our first child together. I will experience motherhood behind the lens and get creative to document each and every milestone in my child’s growth. I am an advocate of documenting milestones and printing them out; there is nothing like a printed picture. I continue to explore life creatively and offer my talent to non-profits as well as in a professional level." You can also follow Jackie on Facebook and Instagram.
Camera lens filters? What are they? What do you use them for? The most important thing to remember is that whatever filter you get, DO NOT GO CHEAP! Putting cheap glass (or plastic) between your lens and your subject just defeats the purpose of trying to take a better photo. I sit with longtime friend of the show, Leighton DaCosta, to discuss photographers in movies, television, and other media. How is the profession portrayed? What is it about these portrayals that photographers love? And hate? From Peter Parker/Spiderman to Jimmy Olsen to Dexter and more, we take a deep dive into the world of fictional photographers. About Our Guest Leighton DaCosta, or “LD” as many know him by, is a Wedding and Fine Art Portrait Photographer based in Charleston, South Carolina. He started his photography business 15 years ago while serving in the Navy. Due to the military requirements, he learned to make his studio “interstate mobile” as he has operated for extended periods in Virginia, Florida, Utah, Georgia, and now, South Carolina. He’s conducted photo assignments in exotic and remote places such as Dubai, Jamaica, and Aruba; as well as several years flying over Afghanistan. I sit down with wedding photographer Erica Leman of Sweet Alice Photography to discuss a topic many photographers don't think about when trying to book clients: the emotional value and 'weight' of photos. Whether you're photographing a wedding, family portraits, or newborn images, the emotional impact can be different for every viewer. Here's a secret: people are more likely to book AND spend more money based on emotions! About Our Guest Erica Leman of Sweet Alice Photography is a wedding photographer and photography business coach located in the Hudson Valley of New York (Yes, her name is Erica, not Alice – Alice is her cat).
