Discussion of all the changes happening in the world of social media that came out this week or recently. For a more in-depth conversation of these topics and how they affect small business owners, please join us immediately after on the Searl Media podcast as well. Facebook is doing their best to compete with TikTok and has announced new Lip Sync Live features for Pages, plus has a standalone app coming called Lasso as direct competition. Twitter is testing a bunch of new features including a status indicator for your profile, icebreakers, replying to replies and more. Google has added a Follow button to Maps that will allow you to basically subscribe to updates from local businesses. This means it is even more important to pay attention to social media.
Discussion on NBC's new hyper-specific subscription option called Snow Pass and how it will be the only way traditional advertising via television can survive long-term.  Uber is rumored to be launching a new food delivery service by 2021 that will allow Uber Eats to get to your door via drone. Hoping this helps my own food arrive on time and actually warm. Plus, random Mars news because I just wanted to throw it in.
Wrap up of our time at the Outdoor Hospitality Conference and Expo that was held in Oklahoma City. Discussion on some of the things we learned as well as who we connected with. Uncovering the companies who sell your data as well as data from small businesses. GDPR is changing the way they operate. Plus, Facebook has retail ambitions this holiday season.
Discussion on why we made the decision to record these episodes in advance while we were traveling, plus how we can all benefit from a little more organization in our lives. In the news, the Electronic Frontier Foundation is doing their best to make you aware of all the ways you are being recorded. Plus, Volkswagon is partnering with DWave to use Quantum Computing to solve our traffic congestion problems in major cities.
Discussion on the importance of networking offline and why eye contact, as well as a firm handshake, are still vital. Plus, hiring employees that you can trust and learning to trust them. In the news, more copycats of Amazon Go and their convenient ways to check-out. Plus, there is apparently a strange plan to contact alien life through laser beams and we establish I am weirdly into sci-fi.
Discussion on election day in the United States, and how Google, as well as other companies, are encouraging you to vote. Plus, how to check the results later if you don't want to watch the news. Google Chrome is adding features that will block certain websites from using advertising in an effort to stop those annoying endless ads. Plus, the FCC is trying to encourage fighting of robocalls with carriers.
Discussion on our new homepage for Insider Perks, and how I spent about ten hours of my Sunday working on it. Finishing it up today and tomorrow but pointing out the importance of keeping up to date. Clorox has paid a company for data from their internet-connected thermometer so they can advertise using it. Amazon opens yet another four-star store in California, and there are finalists for their HQ2 location. Plus, we discuss fake social media environments.
Discussion on phone numbers and how they tether you down to a specific device in an age where that shouldn't be possible. We briefly talk about a solution to this and expand on Searl Media podcast. How creepy is personalized marketing? Not very if you are taking it one step at a time and remembering what consumers expect. They will adopt it over time, you just need to walk in step with them. Plus, Boring is on track to open their first tunnel on Dec 10th.
Discussion of adapting to situations where clients are in need of a creative marketer to solve an unexpected problem. Briefly, we talk about a client need that came up yesterday and then talk about how critical it is to have creative marketing in the Searl Media podcast. Facebook is testing new analytics features as well as expanding those available for Instagram, new ways to advertise on social, and more.
Discussion on patience and how most business owners can't figure out how to practice this regularly. Playing the long-term game is the only way to long-term success, it doesn't come easy or quick. On my desk, yesterday, was an email about a donation of services I made to one of our associations. Be aware of how you can give back while simultaneously playing the long-term branding game. Tesla has a new upgrade for its summon feature in the words, you can now share IGTV clips to Instagram Stories, and Amazon is continuing to expand their 4-star experiences to new places.
We've gotten a little off track with my original intention for this show, covering only the daily news instead of what we're doing. Today we go back to basics and discuss what we're dealing with, but go a little bit longer to cover the days' news as well.  Using WordPress SSO to provide a better client experience and making sure our computers are as secure as possible. Those are the two things that have been on my mind lately at Insider Perks. Plus, Google wants to map your home through a partnership with iRobot and their vacuums, and Spotify is giving away free Google Home Minis with family plan subscriptions through year's end.
Discussion on Google-owned Waymo getting permission to test self-driving cars without a driver in California, and a call-to-action for everyone to test their WordPress sites with Gutenberg. Google has a new doodle for Halloween, and MIT has created a social experiment for this evening that you allow you to control a human. Happy Halloween!
Discussion on Sam's Club trying to compete in a small way with Amazon Go, not as heavy on the tech but heavy on less friction with their customers. Expect to see more competition quickly. Mobileye and Volkswagon are partnering to start a ride-hailing service in Israel next year. Billed as a global test site, this is one of many initiatives that are going to quickly see a commercial service. James Patterson is releasing a novel of sorts on Facebook Messenger today, simply open the app and search for "The Chef". We discuss some of the other features and speculate on the future of audio.
Discussion on rumors of a Google Play subscription service that would include a certain number of bundled apps. Simply speculation at this point but code has been found to indicate it is being considered. Smart cities are the main topic today as we discuss Google-owned Sidewalk Labs and their plans for Toronto. Privacy concerns are facing the company as they use data to build smarter urban areas but the main focus is just on discussing what they want to create.
Discussion on how Amazon Go is expanding quickly and plans to have over 3,000 stores by 2021. More than that, though, we talk about the steps beyond this and where grocery stores will be beyond that. Robots will be building robots in a proposed new factory that has seen a $150 million dollar investment in China. Plus, Google has retooled their Discover feed to allow for better personal recommendations.
It's the 50th episode and we are just getting started. A brand new intro (long overdue) is here, short and to the point. Tesla has a new autopilot feature that is supposedly going live sometime today and will allow highway drivers to do nothing except confirm lane changes once they turn it on. Red Bull has a live streaming AR event today that will bring a mountain into your living room. 3D cameras have made this possible and we can only imagine future advertising possibilities. Snapchat continues to innovate, although I'm not sure if this will actually lead to future success. Plus, Honda has teamed up with a couple of universities to try and develop an AI that wants to learn.
Discussion on Google Lens and how the feature that was once relegated to smartphone cameras is now coming to search. You will be able to identify objects in pictures, primarily for shopping in the beginning, but we imagine this expanding quickly.   Companies are working quickly to imagine the workplace of the future, and we explore one way that Spatial is reimagining Slack. Our team works remotely and communication is more important than ever. This technology, while still in the very early stages, holds a lot of promise for allowing remote workers and meeting participants to collaborate with each other in new and exciting ways without travel.
Discussion on a Google Ads fraud scheme that involved hundreds of apps targeting kids and teens, all told stealing around $10 million dollars of ad spend from unsuspecting brands. SoundCloud now offers a way to share links back to your songs right from within Instagram Stories. Possibly a good way to get the word out for emerging artists as well as for businesses with podcasts. A new company has created fashionable AR glasses in a hope to create an interest by consumers to adopt the tech. Discussion on whether these are viable yet or we still have a few years.
Discussion on the article we pushed to today's show regarding Google's new conversational advertising platform. Called AdLingo, in its current form, it allows for bot conversations inside ads. There is a bright future for this kind of tech to live outside Facebook Messenger.
