Join Jim Williams with former member of the George W. Bush administration and internationally recognized political analyst Alan Steinberg. This week they breakdown the key political topics of the week. This was the wildest week of the nearly four years that President Donald Trump has been in office. He was in Walter Reed National Medical Center with a case of COVID 19, went on a joy ride outside the hospital to show his followers he was doing fine, he returned to the White House on Monday and took his mask off and entered the residence. On Wednesday he returned to the Oval Office, Thursday he turned down an invitation to be part of the Presidential Town Hall Debate that was being done virtually due to President Trump’s condition. Trump attacked the bipartisan Committee on Presidential Debates for making the Miami Town Hall debate he still has COVID 19.Thursday he went after Attorney General Bill Barr for not moving faster to seek indictments for former President Barack Obama, Vice President Biden, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.Friday he planned a Rose Garden rally and announced a planned trip to Florida on Monday only one week after being released from Walter Reed.So much to talk about so little time!Alan Steinberg is one of the most insightful voices in not only Republican politics but in then entire political arena. He has been involved in campaigns for most of his adult life. He served as at the request of former President George W. Bush in the role of Regional Administrator of Region 2 EPA. The region covers New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Puerto Rico as well as six tribal nations. He also served as a conservation advisor to the Israeli government. Also, Steinberg served as the Executive Director of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission under former New Jersey Governor Christie Whitman.Follow him on Twitter @ASteinberg613Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/alan.steinberg.5Columns at insidernj.com Stay in touch with us on social media. This week our guest in NBA Insider Eric Wilson the host of The Sports Arena and he gives us the latest news on the player's choice to pause the playoffs. Moved by the videotaped shooting of Jacob Blake, earlier this week in Wisconsin, many professional athletes — some who had previously donned Black Lives Matter T-Shirts and knelt for the national anthem to protest racial injustice — made a more dramatic statement. Other sports leagues, Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, the National Football League, Major League Soccer, the WNBA, and other stars in individual sports demanding an end to racial injustice quickly joined the NBA players. We do a deep dive into where the things go from here and all indications are that they will push a strong get out to vote effort. They will also push forward with the help of the NBA some strong moves to seek racial justice reform. Stay tuned as we will follow all the storylines here on the pod. Special thanks to Eric Wilson for joining the conversation and helping us understand where things are headed. A great conversation with my guest Dr. Eric Roe on his brilliant new book Iran’s Reconstruction Jihad: Rural Development and Regime Consolidation after 1979. You can get it on Amazon or wherever you get your books online. Some brief background on the book from Dr. Roe: Based on extensive fieldwork in Iran and Lebanon, this book examines how the Islamic Republicof Iran (IRI) instrumentalized rural development to consolidate power at home and projectinfluence abroad. A cornerstone of the IRI’s domestic consolidation and overseas influence wasthe significant, yet understudied organization and ministry, Reconstruction Jihad (RJ). The term“jihad” in RJ’s name constituted a powerful recruitment and mobilization tool that referred to asacred struggle to improve society and the self through rural development and other positivepursuits beyond the military sphere.
Our guests are Avneet Singh and Randy Shrewsberry who together feel that “Demilitarizing the Police,” is the smart way to go. That is not defunding, disbanding, or in anyway doing away with police in this country.Singh is the founder of the Los Angeles based the “Voice of Mankind.” It is a non-profit Think Tank working to influence public opinion on issues that affect us all. We are here to make sense of this changing world. As for Shrewsberry he is a former police officer, Crash Reconstruction Investigator as well as a Certified Fire & Explosion Investigator. Mr. Shrewsberry has spent nearly 30 years in both the public and private sector criminal justice field. He has been a lecturer on criminal justice matters and has been admitted as an expert on several occasions in the State of California, State of South Carolina and the State of Indiana in Criminal and Civil court. His most recent work has received national attention including cited at The New York Daily News, The Washington Post, NBCSports, USAToday, and more.He is the founder of he Institute for Criminal Justice Training Reform exists to save lives and reduce injury among the public and the police by reforming the deeply-flawed, inadequate, and antiquated training models, policies, procedures, and legislative standards for employees in the United States' Criminal Justice Reform.
My guest is author Dr. Saqib Qureshi who has peened a must read book titled The Broken Contract: Making Our Democracies Efficient, Representative, and AccountableDr. Qureshi digs into the data to show that a large number of elected representatives are mostly rich, male, and political lifers, and as such frequently out of touch with a changing society and its demographics. Dr. Qureshi proposes that rather than allowing bureaucrats protected employment for life, some 2% of all underachieving government employees should be regularly removed from their jobs. Some might find this unfair, but Dr. Qureshi points out this is below the annual turnover of a private sector company. Conversely, he argues that we should meaningfully reward the top 5 percent of public sector employees. This is something that he suggests can be done if employees are given effective evaluations each quarter, providing the necessary comparative data.
