Episode 20 - Sub Cult

2019-11-1346:22

And so we reach the end of another sandwich odyssey. From po’boys to cubans, we’ve come a long way from that dodgy Subway pilot episode so it would be rude not to end the season with another blockbuster ‘wich. That’s right, its time we talked about Sub Cult. We’ve been eyeing up these award winning subs for a while and, with their first brick and mortar store opening to unprecedented demand, we just had to saunter down to St. Pauls to get our hands on one. For our season finale you can expect nothing but drama, intense mayo debate and a half-baked sandwich trivia loser’s forfeit.  For amateur sandwich photos of our Sub Cult adventure, visit our Instagram channel @between2slices
For the penultimate episode of Season 2 we went in search of the mythical ‘Rib Man’. Known to frequent Brick Lane Market for a select few hours on Sunday afternoons, the Rib Man has become an elusive but legendary figure on the London food scene; a street food Sasquatch if you will. Eager to get our hands on his famed rib meat sandwich (with signature hot sauce), we packed our bags, got our binoculars and headed to Shoreditch to see if we could track him down. Follow our hunt for the legendary Rib Man on Instagram: @between2slices
We’re reaching the end of Season 2, so its only reasonable we start throwing out the big hitters from London’s sandwich scene. This time, we snuck down to Bodega Rita’s in Coal Drops Yard, London’s latest Instagram ready shopping district (there are far too many fountains here), to take on their popular Friday Sandwich Meal Deal. Inspired by New York’s thriving global deli and sandwich scene, these guys are really pushing the flavour boundaries so we were excited to see what they’d conjured up. You can track our sandwich journey in photo form on our highly underflowed Instagram account: @between2slices
It's the big one, a real heavyweight B2S title contender. For episode 17 we finally got our act together and ventured down to Finsbury Park to visit Max's critically acclaimed sandwich institution. Known for his quirky, ballsy and inventive recipes, Max is seen as a sandwich pioneer, the Steve Jobs of sandwich creation if you will, so we've been itching to see if his menu lives up to the hype.  Follow our pilgrimage to Max's Sandwich Shop in photo form by checking out our Instagram channel: @between2slices
Episode 16 - Dip & Flip For our 16th instalment, we took on Dip & Flip’s acclaimed gravy soaked roast meat sandwich in arguably the messiest episode to date. These guys have been taking South West London by storm with their no holds barred approach to the ‘French Dip’ - a roast beef baguette served alongside a gluttonous pot of dipping gravy. We donned our finest bibs, stocked up on kitchen roll and headed down to Brixton to see what all the fuss was about. Watch us board the South London Gravy Train on our Instagram account: @between2slices
Episode 15 sees us head North (to Islington) only to go South… Deep South to a Louisiana inspired gastro-pub. Plaquemine Lock sits quaintly by the Regents Canal and has been serving up authentic Louisiana inspired cajun food for a good few years now. It was recently awarded a Michelin Bib (me neither) and is one of the few places in London where you can sample an authentic seafood Po’boy. We’ve given fish a miss for a while now on B2S so we were excited to take on our first fish-wich and what a place to start (FRIED OYSTERS AND GRAVY!) This pub was turquoise AF! Check out our Plaquemine Po’boy pics on Instagram: @between2slices.
With Deeney’s setting the toastie bar high last season, it's fair to say our next contender to the toastie thrown has a lot of work to do. However, this isn’t a normal toastie, this is an XXL stovetop 3 cheese wonder, hand crafted by chefs at one of London’s most prestigious hotels. When B2S headed to the Wigmore, a posh pub decked in emerald green interiors at the Langham Hotel, we were ready to tackle a gourmet monster. If you like melted cheese analysis, you cannot miss this. Check out our fancy filterless snaps at the Wigmore on Instagram at @between2slices (they’re so green it hurts)
Our second salt beef voyage (see ep 5 for the first) took us to Monty’s Deli in Hoxton, a place so good its been likened to the iconic New York pastrami institution Katz’s Deli. This place has been dishing out critically acclaimed mixed meat Reubens for years now so its only fair we finally chalked it off our list. You’ll be pleased to know Sam didn’t fake an unnecessarily loud orgasm at the table (in true When Harry Met Sally fashion) but the pickles certainly roused him. Witness our battle with Monty’s Reuben on Instagram at: @between2slices
Episode 12 sees us size up our first Cuban sandwich at Papi’s Kitchen in Soho. We walk past this stall on Rupert Street almost every day and the smells, coupled with the lengthy queues, piqued our interest. Owned by the charismatic Cleb Mendonca, this place has only been up and running for a matter of months but comfortably outshines the competition at ‘Street Food Union Market’ with its mouth watering Cuban concoctions. This guy has worked hard to perfect his recipe (he legit cycles across London every day to pick up fresh bread) so we were excited to put his signature ‘El Cubano’ to the test! Episode 11 - Hawksmoor

Episode 11 - Hawksmoor

2019-04-2236:35

That’s right, after unprecedented demand (i.e. Sam’s Mum wondering why we’d stopped publishing), we’re back with a new season of Between 2 Slices. For this run of 10 episodes, we’ve loosened the purse strings a little and splashed out on some seriously gourmet wiches. We begin at Hawksmoor, a steakhouse institution, a ‘special occasion’ kinda place where date night couples comfortably blow 40 quid on chateaubriands and triple cooked chips. Our research showed these guys had been studiously crafting ‘the perfect steak sandwich’ so we wanted to start the season on a luxurious note and see what all the fuss was about. See how we got on at Hawksmoor on our beautiful Instagram account: @between2slices

Episode 10 - Deeney's

Packed with as much drama as an Eastenders Xmas Special we're giving you the season finale you’ve all been waiting for: a Scottish themed Burns Night Special. From banh mi to Philly cheese, Season 1 has been a wild and tasty ride, but we’ve decided to go out with a bang on Burns Night and review a much revered Haggis toastie from the critically acclaimed Deeney’s Cafe. Expect offensive Scottish accents, astute toast analysis and the hotly anticipated final round of Sandwich Trivia. Have we saved the best episode till last? Find out by listening to the final instalment of B2S: Season 1. For compelling photographic evidence of episode 10 and all our other reviews, visit our Instagram channel: @between2slices
Not that Philly Cheesesteaks can’t be classy, but for episode 9 we’ve decided to push the pod into more sophisticated territory by taking a visit to the ever so stylish Monocle Cafe. Opened by Monocle in 2013, this place has everything you’d expect from a cafe run by a business lifestyle magazine in well-to-do-Marylebone: minimalistic design, rich mahogany interiors, leather-bound books, branded hand towels and a strict no crusts policy. So, after shining our brogues and applying some moisturiser, we strolled down to Chiltern Street to give our verdict on their signature lunch offering: the Chicken Katsu sandwich. Peruse the pics from our visit to Monocle Cafe on our immensely successful Instagram channel: @between2slices
The banh mi baguette has gradually become a ubiquitous presence on the London lunch scene so its only right that we squeeze a banh mi review into Season One of B2S. For episode 8 we wandered down to the appropriately named Banh Mi Bay for some French-Vietnamese fusion in Fitzrovia. From coriander cutting advice to Sam overcoming his fear of pâté, this episode really has it all. So sit back, relax and shake off the January blues with another dose of sharp-witted sandwich criticism.
It's Christmas! So what better way to celebrate than by hitting the high street and reviewing 6 of the most celebrated festive creations between 2 slices. For our Xmas special we've altered the formula slightly and ranked 6 sandwiches by taste, value, structure and the potency of cranberry sauce. Expect lengthy stuffing debate, Xmas Trivia and high blood sugar levels as we dissect this year's lunchtime offerings from the meal deal masters. Check out our snaps from the 6 sandwich saga on our Insta account (we even bought embarrassing festive hats for the occassion): @between2slices
For our 7th episode, we strolled down to Old Compton Street to visit a Soho institution: the historic Camisa & Son. As one of the oldest and most celebrated Italian delis in London, its fair to say we were looking forward to this one. Did it meet our expectations? Did Sam struggle with basic Italian pronunciation? Will Greg finally compare a sandwich to a famous tennis player? All will be answered in your new favourite sandwich review podcast. If you like rustic Italian interiors (don’t lie… we know you do), you will love our snaps of this place. Check them out on the B2S Instagram page here: @between2slices
Episode 6 - Bodeans

Episode 6 - Bodeans

2018-12-0330:27

Another decidedly meaty edition of Between 2 Slices (we will eventually try and do some veggie stuff soz) sees us take on a signature sandwich designed by the BBQ buffs at Bodeans. For this episode we sampled their Soho Special (which is an innuendo in itself) - a creation once heralded as ‘London’s Best Sandwich’ by Capital FM. The meat was smoky, the sauce was sticky and, as always, the coleslaw was a welcome surprise. Check out the snaps from our visit to Bodeans on our world renowned instagram channel: @between2slices
Salt beef is trending, salt beef is ‘in’, salt beef is the new black. From bagels to reubens, salt beef is more or less omnipresent in any well respected sandwicherie, so we thought, after 4 episodes, it was only fair to turn our attention to a salt beef specialist. Enter Tongue & Brisket, a salt beef sandwich joint steeped in history; a place where the pickles are plentiful and the rye bread is reputable. We ambled down to their Wardour Street branch to see what all the fuss was about. Watch us sample the salt beef on ‘the gram’ here: @between2slices
You’d think we’d stop recording by now but no, we are serious about this, there are now 4 episodes of ‘Between 2 Slices’. In this episode we walk a bit further than usual and take a trip to the unpronounceable ‘Passyunk Avenue’; an American “dive bar” beneath the BT tower, famous for its Philly Cheesesteaks. So after googling the questionable ingredients found within ‘Whiz Cheese’ and whistling the Rocky theme tune, we ordered two Cheesesteaks and let the criticism commence. Check out the cheesesteak challenge on our widely revered Instagram account here: @between2slices
For our third instalment, we returned to Holborn to check out an acclaimed breakfast sandwich at ‘Fernandez & Wells’ - a fancy London millennial magnet responsible for some of the finest brunch in town. The pudding was black, the eggs were fried, the bread was sour and we definitely turned up way too late and awkwardly missed the breakfast menu. See how we got on at ‘Fernandez and Wells’ on our truly spectacular Instagram account here: @between2slices
Episode 2 sees us continue our sandwich odyssey to Holborn and the UK’s only branch of ‘Which Wich?’. We’ve been eyeing this place up for a while, so given the close proximity to B2S HQ, we thought we’d put their so called ‘superior sandwiches’ to the test. Please be advised that we underestimated how large their sandwiches were, so expect plenty of sighing, dramatic exhaling and a feeling of mild physical discomfort towards the end of the pod. Witness the physical challenge that was ‘Which Wich?’on Instagram here: @between2slices
