Kathryn Greeley is a collector, gardener, entertainer, and designer. Kathryn lives in western North Carolina in a lovely home called Chestnut Cottage. This cottage and its grounds are filled with many of her favorite things. The gardens outside the cottage are equally impressive. Kathryn’s great affection for cottage style gardens was inspired by her many visits to England, Scotland, and Ireland. Her cozy and informal gardens fill her home with flowers from spring through fall – starting with over 2,600 daffodils and tulips followed by peonies, foxgloves, lupines, forget-me-nots, grape hyacinths and then lilacs, scented roses, delphiniums, sweet peas and of course hollyhocks to mention a few. We’ve brought Kathryn on today to discuss planning a year-round garden.Find her new book here:The Collected Cottage - Gardening, Gathering and Collecting at Chestnut CottageResources Kathryn mentioned: The English Garden (magazine) - https://theenglishgarden.telegraph.co.uk/ Brent and Becky’s (online store) - https://brentandbeckysbulbs.com/Stay Connected:Subscribe to our newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/e3cef217a5e7/sweetnewsText a friend with a link to the show https://pod.link/1442852139Support this Show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/272163da-d825-415c-8092-bd907aba8ebd/donationsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/steel-magnolias-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

The chain of barrier islands that skirts the coast of North Carolina from the Virginia border to Cape Lookout was once remote. Today the Outer Banks is one of America’s most popular vacation destinations; welcoming millions of visitors each year! We had the opportunity to sit down with author and Outer Banks native Clark Twiddy. He chronicles the region's journey from isolation to popularity through the stories of innovators and risktakers.Clark Twiddy grew up in Duck, NC and has watched much of the transformation he discusses in his new book "Outer Banks Visionaries: Building North Carolina’s Oceanfront." He was in the U.S. Navy and is an alumnus of Virginia Military Institute, the University of Tennessee (Go Vols!) and Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. He is now the president of Twiddy and Company, a hospitality and asset management firm that was founded in 1978 along the OBX. He has also served in many public, private and nonprofit roles. More info: https://www.twiddy.com/blog/outer-banks-visionaries/?gclid=CjwKCAjwgsqoBhBNEiwAwe5w00_jwbCKzj4iN9MnyKl9Q58vsQvXVnKkhlWeFm_AceYunQaUPIuUihoCuSEQAvD_BwETwiddy Rentals: https://www.twiddy.com/"Outer Banks Visionaires: Building North Carolina’s Oceanfront": https://www.arcadiapublishing.com/products/9781467153911Stay Connected:Subscribe to our newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/e3cef217a5e7/sweetnewsText a friend with a link to the show https://pod.link/1442852139Support this Show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/272163da-d825-415c-8092-bd907aba8ebd/donationsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/steel-magnolias-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
We have found two Southern Jewish women that share our passion in preserving history around the dinner table! We are sitting down with Rachel Gordon Barnett and Lyssa Kligman Harvey, two lifelong South Carolinians, to discuss the intersection of traditional Jewish dishes with classic Southern ingredients and African American culinary traditions. The American South boasts some of the oldest communities of people of Jewish faith. In the 1600s Jewish people began settling in Charleston, South Carolina, and by the 1700s South Carolina had the largest Jewish population in the United States. The family recipes and the stories that accompany their origins and adaptations in the American South reveal the deep and storied lives of Jewish people, families, and communities across America.Find out more about Rachel and Lyssa's book and project Kugels and Collards: https://kugelsandcollards.org/Stay Connected:Subscribe to our newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/e3cef217a5e7/sweetnewsText a friend with a link to the show https://pod.link/1442852139Support this Show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/272163da-d825-415c-8092-bd907aba8ebd/donationsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/steel-magnolias-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

The Golden Isles   Halfway between Savannah, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida lies a nature-lover’s dream vacation spot: The Golden Isles. These Georgia islands have something for everybody, from luxurious accommodations and great golf courses to more modest spots with marsh lands and bike trails for outdoor exploration.  Lainie personally spent some time this summer at Jekyll Island, but we will also discuss St. Simon Island, Little St. Simon Island, Sea Island,  and Brunswick (port city.) Today we will be discussing the importance of recipes in the continuation of family heritage. Using food as a means to bridge generations one to another, we hope this discussion will inspire you to head back to the family dinner table to hear from one another, learn about your past, and figure out where you fit in the bigger story of your family's future.    One mentioned podcast episode we referred back to is "Southern Cookbooks." I recently found Steel Magnolias and LOVE it! I was Southern born, but midwest raised with all my family's Southern ways. I have always been proud of my deep Southern heritage and traditions. This podcast is like sitting down with friends talking everything from food, family, faith and everything in between! #steelmagnoliaspodcast #southernlife #proudsouthernroots
