Josh knows the landscape of Hawaii better than most, and more so the forests, which famously contain the sought-after tonewood, Koa. Josh is the third generation in his family to continue harvesting and processing Hawaiian Koa, and subsequently he is one of the most knowledgable people to speak to about this amazing wood. Josh's responsibility is first and foremost to the trees and the lands in which they grow, and he very much feels a part of the environment in which he works. He ensures that he forms relationships with his buyers, so that he can take pleasure in seeing the wood he sells from forest floor to finished instrument.
Anne is a farmer, woodworker, writer, blogger, YouTuber, you name it - she's made a name as someone committed to working with their hands, while promoting positivity and dedication in the name of passion. Seven years ago, she quit her tech job, and now she lives on a farm with over 80 animals (not to mention a small population of bees).
She opens up to us about her decision to leave the tech industry, her community on instagram and beyond, and the life she has chosen to live full time.
We spoke to Stuart Day about his design philosophy, his new shop, his lutherie pedigree and his backstory.
We visited Jim Fleeting, an early mentor of Tom's, in his shop in Manchester. Jim is renowned for his repair work, but he also builds a cracking guitar. His approach to his craft is very much 'anyone can learn anything as long as they work hard enough', and after deciding to enroll in an lutherie evening class several years ago, he proved his own philosophy despite never having touched a woodworking tool beforehand.
We spoke to Dion James and Leila Sidi about their philosophy as builders, their backstories, and how they find sharing a space as makers.
