Don't lie, we're all feeling it. Being a health-care student can be incredibly stressful, and students in every discipline and program are feeling overwhelmed and burned out! But guess what? It's not admitting failure to admit that you are being challenged in a program that is MEANT to be time-intensive and academically rigorous. Let's talk about why burnout and stress happens, and more importantly, how to overcome the burnout so that you can actually enjoy getting to learn about your favorite subject!  --- Follow me Instagram: @feedthatnation Blog: Feedthatnation.com Music: "Delight" by Dee-Yan Key
Hot take: Don't take nutrition advice from anyone who is selling you something!  There are so many people out there talking about nutrition, both experts and amateurs, and navigating the world of nutrition professionals can be daunting. Join me as I discuss different professions that can give you advice about nutrition, talk scope of practice, who you should get advice from, and break down just how complicated this topic is!  --- Follow me! This is the first episode that I've published with real live video for YouTube! So if the audio is a little funky--I'm still working on my editing skills (:  I'm talking cookbooks! Call me old-school, but I love cookbooks! It makes trying to decide what to make so much easier, everything is organized and clearly written out, and there's just something so satisfying about cooking with a book propped up in front of you, a couple of smudges or bits of flour on the pages. Catch me talking what makes a good cookbook, and a few of my favorite cookbooks and what I like about them. Cookbooks I mention:  Indian-ish, by Priya Krishna Run Fast, Eat Slow, by Shalane Flanagan and Elyse Kopecky Salt Fat Acid Heat, by Samin Nosrat The $5 a Meal College Vegetarian Cookbook, by Nicole Cormier The Better Homes Cookbook The Forest Feast Gatherings, by Erin Gleeson Follow Me: Instagram: @feedthatnation My blog: feedthatnation.com YouTube: Natalie Nation Music: "Delight", Dee-Yan Key
When people find out that I study nutrition, I get hit up for advice everywhere from the dentist office to the dance floor. And that's awesome! I love having conversations with curious people. The most common question I get asked is usually along the lines of "I want to be healthy. Where do I start?"  In this episode, I talk about what I've learned about getting started with making positive lifestyle change, discuss the steps to success, and talk about what people REALLY want to know when they're asking "What should I eat?"  Follow me!  Instagram: @feedthatnation Blog: feedthatnation.com Music: "Delight", by Dee-Yan Key.
Food is expensive! So I visited 7 grocery stories in the Twin Cities to answer the question: Where can I buy the cheapest groceries? Join me as I talk about my adventures, my findings, and some of the reasons people shop at the stores they do.  The stores I mention: Walmart, Aldi, Target, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, HyVee, and Cub Foods My "grocery list" 1 (15oz) can diced tomatoes, 1 pound organic baby carrots, 1 bag russet potatoes, 1 pound dry lentils, 1 box mac and cheese, 1 loaf "oatnut" bread, 1 package oreos, 1 roll paper towels, 1/2 gallon 1% milk, and 12oz sliced sharp cheddar cheese.  Find me!  My instagram: @feedthatnation My blog: feedthatnation.com My theme song: Delight, by Dee Yan Key.
Putting this personal experience of mine into a podcast is one of the most vulnerable things that I've ever done. I didn't tell hardly anyone in my life about being nominated for commencement speaker because I was afraid of the shame of having to admit that I was not chosen. But knowing now that my self-worth is NOT defined by this or any other experiences in my life is powerful! The struggle to prove that you are "good enough" is a struggle I see in so many of my friends and peers, and I want to break the cycle! I recorded this episode back in May, and I'm almost laughing at how much change I hear in myself now compared to myself only a month ago!  Follow me: @feedthatnation, feedthatnation.com/podcast/ Music: "Delight", Dee-Yan Key. Part two of our episode all about managing chronic illness as a young adult. Shauna, Analisa, Rose, and I continued our discussion about chronic illness. Featuring discussion (and lots of laughs) as we talk about what it's like to tell people we have a chronic illness, not wanting to be the "spokesperson" for our disease, well-meaning but ignorant strangers giving advice, navigating family, holidays, significant others, commiserating about our shared "near-death" experiences (we're so dramatic!), and our advice for other young adults facing our illnesses: seek out support when you need it, claim EVERY aspect of who you are, and don't forget to laugh at yourself once in a while.  Featured chronic conditions: Type I Diabetes, Meniere's Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). If you are wanting more information about these conditions or any others, we encourage you to do research! Google will turn up a lot of reliable sources (think .org, .gov, and .edu!).   Shauna's Blog:  https://aboveallthe.wordpress.com/  Follow me @feedthatnation and feedthatnation.com Music: "Delight", Dee Yan-Kee
Part one of two of an awesome (count how many times I say "awesome" in these episodes; I was so pumped!) discussion about managing chronic illness as a young adult . Featuring three of my friends, Rose, Analisa, and Shauna, who each have their own experiences navigating the ups, and especially the downs of chronic illness and disease. Part one features an introduction to each of our chronic conditions and diagnosis stories, use of diet to manage symptoms, comparing "good" and "bad" days, how chronic conditions can affect mental and social health, feelings of guilt, shame, and self-blame, advocating for yourself, and wanting to feel normal. This episode is continued in "Managing Chronic Illness as a Young Adult, Part 2".  Featured chronic conditions: Type I Diabetes, Meniere's Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). I made a podcast! Let's talk about it!  Deciding to create a podcast for my senior honors project wasn't the easiest thing I've ever done, but it's been one of the most exciting and challenging experiences of my college career! I've gained so much confidence in my public speaking skills, along with a lot of technical knowledge about audio production and editing. There have been so many learning opportunities (mistakes!!) that have made me a better interviewer and producer along the way.  Season Two is in production and I am so excited to continue learn more about the world around me. Podcasting allows me to have amazing conversations and learn so many new things!  Please leave me a review and a 5-star rating on iTunes, if that's where you listen. When the tracking software knows that people are listening and like my podcast, they are more likely to recommend it to new listeners!   Stay tuned! The first episode of Season Two will premiere on June 3rd!  Follow me: @feedthatnation or feedthatnation.com Music: "Delight", Dee Yan-Key
