Roger is a teacher and student when it comes to life. Having served as an Idaho teacher, principal, superintendent, and ultimately chief deputy state superintendent, Roger has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing rural education, and appreciates the fierce independence of Idaho and Idahoans alike. Prior to joining the Foundation as Executive Director in 2013, Roger was co-director of the Idaho Leads project at Boise State University’s Center for School Improvement and Policy Studies, and served as an Assistant Professor in the Executive Educational Leadership Program. Roger remains active in the business community through his service on a variety of boards, including Chairman of the Teach For America Regional Board. As Executive director of the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation, Roger has also assisted with Mission43. The title of this episode is the tagline for Mission43. Mission43 provides post-9/11 servicemen, women, and military spouses opportunities to succeed in Idaho after the military through the pillars of education, employment and engagement. Mission43 is fully funded and led through the generosity of this private family foundation. The Albertson Family Foundation’s philanthropic history started in 1966 when Joe Albertson, the founder of the Albertsons grocery stores, began to give back to Idaho communities. This was mainly done through educational opportunities for Idahoans because he and his wife, Kathryn, were not able to finish college during the Great Depression. Since then, the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation has given over $700 million throughout the state to make it a better place to live, work, and play. Roger is an avid outdoorsman and tennis player. He loves Idaho and cares about our community! On Tuesday night @KTVB tweeted out a link to Mark Johnson's bio (complete with professional photo), and his name. And nothing else.  Little did they know it was the greatest podcast promotion they have ever made! Mark Johnson has been an anchor at KTVB in Boise, Idaho since 1983. Our community is grateful for him and all he has done over the years and continues to do each day! Mark’s bio includes gems like, “National Edward R. Murrow and Emmy award winner Mark Johnson returned to Idaho’s NewsChannel 7 in April of 1996… and who could blame him?!” Mark married the former Chris Plishka (from Baraboo, Wisconsin) in 1992. They are avid Green Bay Packers fans and have passed the allegiance down to Mark's twins Hannah and Lindsey and now onto their teenage twin daughters Alexa & Grace. When he's not hanging out with one of his many twin daughters, his hobbies include GOLF!, skiing, music and golf (did we mention that?). He is also very involved with the community and has volunteered for a number of organizations including The Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers - Big Sisters, United Cerebral Palsy, United Way, Salvation Army, First Tee of Idaho, Make-A-Wish and the Boise Rescue Mission. Mark's goals are to someday be as good at putting as his wife, to figure out how to not burn a t-bone, and to astro turf his lawn putting an end to mowing! We hope you enjoy this episode with Mark and hope you enjoy him every night in your bedroom! (You have to listen to understand that one 😉) ---------------------------------------------------------- About the INSPIRE EXCELLENCE Podcast: Connecting with the community is a priority for BVA. Our neighbors need our help. It costs $1,000 on average for Jesse Tree to keep a family housed, compared to $5-10,000 for a family to find new housing after being evicted. At Jesse Tree, they provide information and support to 500 households per month via their Housing Crisis Line, and case management and rental assistance to 50-100 households per month. Over 90% of people requesting assistance can’t pay their rent due to an unanticipated expense or shortfall such as a health care bill, unexpected job loss, or car breakdown. In 2020, 3,500 people became homeless for the first time in their lives and 824 evictions were filed in Ada and Canyon County. These numbers continue to increase year-to-year. Jesse Tree operates a Housing Crisis Line, providing support, information, and referrals to community resources to our neighbors who are unable to pay their rent. They also offer landlord-tenant mediation services so people can resolve their crises and avoid eviction. Jesse Tree provides Emergency Rental Assistance coupled with case management to households at highest risk of eviction and homelessness. Case management sets people up for success and includes landlord mediation, budgeting help, and housing stability planning. Jesse Tree also supports households through the Eviction Court process to keep them from getting an eviction on their record, and to keep them out of homelessness. Ali Rabe is the Executive Director of Jesse Tree and an Idaho State Senator for D17. Prior to joining Jesse Tree, Ali was a Staff Attorney at HomeBase, headquartered in San Francisco, where she supported local governments and service providers in their efforts to prevent and end homelessness. In 2012, Ali received the Boren Fellowship, through which she supported indigenous communities in rural Cambodia fighting to keep their land. She continued the same work in Sierra Leone. Ali also spent some years working for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services as an adjudicator, processing refugees from all over the world. Ali is a proud alumnus of The College of Idaho and holds a J.D. from William & Mary Law School. In her spare time, she teaches yoga and enjoys the outdoors. You might find her around town on her yellow bicycle or exploring nearby hiking trails with friends, family, and her dog. The COVID Vaccine has come with a lot of opinion. In the recent weeks there have been various false claims made about the COVID Vaccine being spread across Idaho - in this episode Dr. Pate debunks some of those myths and speaks to what the future of Idaho looks like. Discussion on COVID Vaccines starts at 19:50. Also in this episode, we discuss what it takes to be a good leader and how you can take practical steps to better lead teams. It is routinely recognized as an emerging health system of note as the transformation of health care in America continues. This episode is focused on ALL things Boise State University as we discuss the future of BSU with their 7th President, Dr. Marlene Tromp. Her perspective will inspire and uplift you.  On July 1, 2019, Dr. Marlene Tromp became the seventh President of Boise State University and, in honor of her inauguration, developed an endowment for the Presidential True Blue Scholarship to assist more Idaho residents with the opportunity to attend college. Since her arrival, she has focused on teaching, research and service by spearheading the Community Impact Program, providing educational opportunities to Idaho’s rural communities and the Hometown Challenge, which helps students return home to give back in their communities. She formed strategic partnerships with industry, higher education and government by launching the Institute for Pervasive Cybersecurity and oversaw a record breaking year of $58 million in research awards. "We can get through this."  With everything going on in the world including the COVID virus, natural disasters and so much more - Jason Coombs walks us through how we can manage behavioral and emotional health during a crisis. Jason describes his journey in his own words here, "I have effectively guided thousands of addicted individuals and their families out of the chaos and into recovery. I am a person in long-term recovery myself and so I've been there. I now lead a nationally accredited substance abuse treatment center, Brick House Recovery. I'm a professional TEDx speaker, consultant, and leadership expert." Brick House Recovery was established in 2014 when our founder noticed an aching need in the Treasure Valley community: high-quality, private, faith-based addiction recovery. Since that time, our goal has been to provide exceptional and effective treatment for adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. https://brickhouserecovery.com Get his book here: https://unhooked.brickhouserecovery.com ---------------------------------------------------------- About the Podcast: Connecting with the community is a priority for BVA.
