Many teams have finished their regular season here in New Brunswick and some were lucky enough to win provincial championships this past weekend and some are heading to provincials in the coming weeks.  It's an exciting time of year with everyone looking to finish strong.  It's weekends like this that make you think about what your most memorable moments are from playing hockey as a kid and how it developed your love of the game. In this episode, I was the one being interviewed by Martin MacKinnon who has an exciting new podcast on the horizon about minor hockey and he was kind enough to let me use the interview for the Start Your Journey Podcast .  Even though I didn’t start playing organized hockey until later than most, listen to my story on how the goal was to keep playing the game I love, just trying to get to that next level and seeing where the game I loved could take me in life.
In this episode of the Start Your Journey podcast, get ready to learn how Adam King, a squash player from the small town of Oromocto, New Brunswick was recruited by Dartmouth College, one of the eight Ivy League schools in the NCAA. Today's guest is Matt Forgie who is a strength coach, chiropractor and gym owner who has worked with some of the best athletes in Southern New Brunswick. It's all about mindset with Matt. While listening to this episode I want you to ask yourself...What can I do to improve my game and improve my skill set that will help me get to that next level? Learn how Matt trains other athletes to help them get to that next level.
Van Burgess is a former pro hockey player who played some of his minor hockey in New Brunswick and met his wife Kristi, a former college softball player, in Huntington, WV during his first year of pro hockey. Together they have raised two incredible sons, one who is attending Miami of Ohio University and the other who recently signed a D1 baseball scholarship with a big D1 school.   So what are the secrets to raising kids who are athletes, who are completely different and interested in different paths?  This family has done a great job. Nobody's preaching here, but there's wisdom that any parent could use in this episode.
In this episode, Chris discusses the 4-point athlete promotion checklist you should be doing this Christmas Break. Many athletes focus on honing their skills, which is super important, however when you are taking a break from training and playing, put some energy into promoting yourself. Tune in to see whether you are hitting these 4 strategies that help you promote yourself to coaches over the Christmas break.
In sports and in life it's inevitable that you're going to get the short end of the stick sometimes, still, when you do, you should NEVER burn bridges. No matter what. Listen to my story and what happened when I didn't burn a bridge, when I could of.
In this episode of the Start Your Journey podcast, get ready to learn all about grinding mentality and how to sell yourself to NCAA coaches with Atlantic Canada tennis star, Luke Saunders.
