And John’s answer to this important question is probably not the answer you are expecting but it is the one shipyard managers need to hear. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-konrad/support

Most professional mariners agree that the most dangerous hour of shipping is the hour between 23:00 and 24:00 - this is because it’s the one hour when the most junior officer, the 3/m, is alone on the bridge of most ships - but a new book by New York TImes bestselling author Daniel Pink suggests that the most dangerous time of shipping starts at 13:00! In 1956 Malcom McLean, an American truck driver, loaded fifty-eight shipping containers aboard a refitted oil tanker from Newark to Houston and, in doing so, completely revolutionized world trade BUT - while the success his idea of containerizing cargo far exceeded anyone's imagination - it failed to achieve his dream of providing seamless door-to-door shipping. Part of the reason for that failure is because of the problems inherent in the design of the container itself. In this episode, Captain John Konrad highlights those problems. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-konrad/support
