Description

A Health and Safety Podcast, boring and complicated right? Nah. It’s the only source of H&S guidance that isn’t boring, or over the top, it’s my personal battle against Health and Safety gone mad. I have been described as a hip young gunslinger of a host and a guy that knows his onions . The podcast has been described as motivating, entertaining, hip and cool, rough and ready, refreshing, funny, interesting, opinionated.
It’s not your normal podcast it’s not just full of interviews, yes we have interviews in the expert explains series, but we aim to provide actual content here!

I have a good reflection on my chat with Carsten Busch. Summary of last weeks chat. In today's episode, don your cowboy hat, your revolver and whip because we are Raiders of the lost Safety science. We have the Indiana Jones of safety with us, Carsten Busch! Carsten is a HSEQ professional who runs an all-round knowledge transfer and consultancy service, He is the myth buster of safety, but he is the man that has done the most investigation in Herbert Heinrich, most of us have never read a word of his work but yet we criticize it all the time. Because it's wrong right? It's so wrong! We know that managing slips and trips don’t stop fatalities, that triangle stuff is rubbish! Heinrich obviously didn’t know what he was talking about! Obviously, that is tongue in cheek, but some people really do go into Heinrich work are not nice about it either but there are something’s that Carsten talks about that are lessons for us all. Lessons from the past for the future so to speak. I heard Carsten speak on the amazing PDCS calls hosted by the amazing Ron Gantt and it was amazing all of us were hooked on what Carsten was saying and I thought the Rebranding Safety audience needs to hear this, so to finish off our Safety 1 Safety 2 mini-series in an amazing way, let's jump into my conversation with Carsten Busch!

Disclaimer: Profanity used throughout this episode Amy is the Founder of The Safe Tribe, a membership community for safety professionals, giving them a safe space to share ideas and gain confidence within the industry. With James, Amy talks about the reputation that the safety profession still has, safety being a scapegoat, the reasons we should focus on core skills, and why she wanted to set up The Safe Tribe, all of this along with discussing her experiences as an employee as well as a consultant. Thank you so much, Amy, for joining us. Enjoy...
Disclaimer - Profanity used throughout this video The survey results are in...... Thanks to everyone that completed our "Safety Professional - are you ok?" survey. The results were thought provoking, and in light of Blue Monday just passed (15th Jan) we share some of our thoughts here. We discuss the state of mental health surrounding the safety profession, how our sleep is affected, the challenges that exist relative to workload, loneliness and isolation, uncertainty, and prioritising our own ambitions. We give our thought on the notion that "good is expected", as well as the importance and power of networks, communities and peer to peer support, along with challenges between individual occupational groups and industry wide sharing. We'd also love you hear your thoughts - do you think it would be valuable to know more about actual issues and events as and when they're happening to trigger discussions on H&S topics, and how the consultant network can come together on this for the greater good of the profession?
Thank you to Chris who joins us for a second time on Rebranding Safety. Chris is an award-winning author and co-founder of Clearfield Group, guiding leaders through change and complexity. We catch up on the last 2 years and the landscape of complexity since his book 'Meltdown', co-authored by Andras Tilcsik, was released in 2018. We discuss leadership and 'the power of not knowing', implementing a culture and how it changes over time, being open and real about the levels of engagement and participation you're willing or able to take on, and the power of story telling. Enjoy, my fellow risk nerds..... (as coined by Chris!)
Disclaimer - Profanity used throughout this podcast. As safety professionals, we find it abhorrent that a person can lose their life at work, but as a society, do we accept that it’s OK for a person to die at work in the name of progress - either economically, socially, technologically? We give our thoughts on this harrowing subject, citing figures from the ILO and HSE reports. We discuss modern slavery, forever chemicals, as well as the issues surrounding SSIP schemes. And, as a profession, who is advocating for us when it comes to the larger, societal safety issues and the significant long term chronic health impacts from things that safety teams/consultants aren't able to look at on a daily basis? What do we want to see from our professional bodies to ensure changes are made to ensure that the economic growth of our countries, and the world, isn't written in blood or the cognitive and behavioural impairment of generations yet to come?
Disclaimer - Profanity used throughout this podcast. It's been a mammoth year at Rebranding Safety - here's a little round up. Tom joins us for this final installment of our psychological safety series. We get into real detail about Work as Done vs Work as Imagined, interpersonal relationships, social contracts and who the experts are when it comes to the hazards of work. We also answer some of your questions – is feeling safe to speak up the only measure of psychological safety? And, how can we encourage psychological safety between those from similar backgrounds and also between those from different backgrounds at the same time? Thanks so much to Tom for joining us for this series over the last few months – it’s been both a blast and valuable at the same time. If you want to check out the work Tom is doing, check out his details below. Otherwise, enjoy this episode peeps.
A little update on what work we've been doing over the last few months. Risk Fluent have been doing a lot of transformational work with Safety Teams recently so I touch on that, my thoughts on the LinkedIn space right now, changes to the fire regulations and how that seems to be affecting demand, the challenges with Professional Indemnity insurance within the fire industry, influencer marketing and what safety work we should actually be doing. Enjoy.
Tom Geraghty is back with us this week hosting his second episode, continuing with our series on psychological safety. We discuss what we think psychological safety looks like in reality, taking the the academia and seeing how it translates within our businesses and our lives. We talk about the importance of motivation and clarity, the power and privilege surrounding it, human error, the knock on effects of banter, and tonnes more. Thanks so much again to Tom for another amazing and insightful conversation. Enjoy.
Thank you so much to Steve for joining us on the pod this week after we reflected on the article he’d written for Sentinel on another episode a few weeks back. His article "Organisational Risk: Predicting the unpredictable" for IIRSM’s Sentinel Magazine was really refreshing to me. And now he’s here with us in the flesh! Steve has an extensive background in economics, security, nuclear, risk, the list goes on, he’s a very well-respected professional in our industry. We discuss the safety profession in general and it’s perception, mature risk management, zero harm, the sharing of information, big corporations vs SMEs, the nature of trade associations, and loads more. Thanks again Steve. Absolutely cracking chat. Enjoy.

A little insight into how, at Risk Fluent, we help our customers to balance practical and reasonable risk management and the ever growing demand for ****covering paperwork. James gives a keynote at the PASMA Conference on how to start rebranding health and safety in your business, build better cultures and sleep at night with a sense of confidence that is founded on effective risk management, not pointless paperwork. Enjoy.
We're back! After a much needed break over the holidays, we're returning with this banger of an episode with Peter Jenkins, albeit a little later than planned! In this third and final episode in Peter's run as our quarterly co-host, we discuss the brand of safety; what's wrong with the contemporary brands of safety? What can we do about it? We talk about the commercial agendas within safety, the role of the consumer, the educational institutes, the awarding and accreditation bodies in branding safety. A massive thank you to Peter for hosting Rebranding Safety for the past quarter - it's been a blast. If you haven't already, go check out the previous two episodes linked below, they won't disappoint. And no, Peter still hasn't told me what his mysterious middle name is...... Enjoy.
