Stigma!

Wow! Episode 9! Thanks for sticking with us! We apologize for taking a while to get this episode out- it's been a busy time over here at HACHR. This episode is all about stigma! What it is, how it's manifesting in our local community, and what can be done to address it. We talk more specifically about some pretty juicy topics including clickbait media, Brandie's drug use, law enforcement, PWUD, and...Our new Executive Director!! This episode is very informative, extra sassy, and also a little longer than usual. We hope you enjoy! Oh, and please excuse the puppy noises! Rebel showed up to work a little late. As always, here's where you can find the facts: "Stigma among health professionals towards patients with substance use disorders and its consequences for healthcare delivery: Systematic review." Drug and Alcohol Dependence. 131 (2013) 23– 35. "Negotiating substance use stigma: the role of cultural health capital in provider–patient interactions." We are already on our 8th episode, how exciting! We will also be having our second on-air guest, Eureka City Council member Kim Bergel. She will be talking to us about her experience during the homelessness challenge. She and the rest of Council were challenged to live outside for 48 hours to get a feel for what it's like for our friends and neighbors who are experiencing chronic homelessness and have no where to go- rain or shine, good health or bad. Our second segment will focus on Fortuna City Council and their desire to implement a Syringe Exchange ordinance similar to the one that exists in Eureka, and the unfortunate and inhumane comments that have resulted from their discussion. Below are links to a few articles about Fortuna as well as coverage of the homelessness challenge. https://www.times-standard.com/2019/02/04/fortuna-meeting-gets-heated-over-needle-exchange/?fbclid=IwAR2ZqRA24uiZP5L9LsYjNApdq1l8sOTsm1rBfJDYOxa3Zlji49lMo7bqds8 https://lostcoastoutpost.com/2019/mar/8/fortunas-syringe-ordinance/ https://www.redwoodtimes.com/2019/03/19/fortuna-cant-stop-needle-exchange-but-council-moves-closer-to-regulating-it/ https://lostcoastoutpost.com/2019/feb/27/homeless-challenge-eureka-city-councilmember-kim-b/
It's February, which means we're coming up on the holiday that people either love, or love to hate! Whatever your preference, we thought this would be a good month to talk about sexual health! AND, we get to do it with our first guest ever- Chelsey from our local Planned Parenthood! We get to talk about harm reduction in relation to sexual health, PeP and PreP, and what kind of services our local Planned Parenthood provides! Below are some important links to Humboldt County health data, as well as some information on a training hosted by Planned Parenthood that is coming up in March. Also, please forgive the background noise! This was our first time with someone else in the HACHR studio, so we were getting the hang of it! In episode number five, we're talking all about syringe exchange! We will discuss the early beginnings and founders of syringe exchange, the benefits of it, how it all works, how policy (good and bad) impacts syringe exchange, and we'll talk a little about what we do here at HACHR! In episode 3 of #FactsMatter we're talking about stimulant overdose, also known as Overamping. We will discuss what stimulants are, what Overamping is, the signs and symptoms to watch for, and what you can do if you or someone else may be overdosing on stimulants. We also discuss polysubstance use and how that can effect Overamping. Big thanks to the Harm Reduction Coalition and all their invaluable resources on stimulant use and Overamping. Harm Reduction 101

This is our first episode and we're very excited! There might be a few mess-ups, but bare with us, we'll get better! This episode is all about the basics of Harm Reduction- its definition, its main principles, some history, and what we do at our program. Because this podcast is titled #factsmatter, below are some articles and websites that we referenced in this first episode! Harm Reduction Coalition- harmreduction.org Historical context of drug use- Crocq, M.-A. (2007). "Historical and cultural aspects of man's relationships with Addictive Drugs." Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience, 9(4): 355-361 Not referenced in this episode, but a cool article none the less about the role of people who use drugs in harm reduction work- Marshall et al. (2015). "Peering into the literature: A systematic review of the roles of people who inject drugs in harm reduction initiatives." Drug and Alcohol Dependence, 151:1-14
