How does the resistance of a conductor change as we shrink its length all the way down to a few atoms? This is a question that has only become answerable during the last twenty years of work by experimentalists, leading to enormous progress in transistor development. This introductory lecture provides foundational concepts for the beginning nanoelectronics student with no prior background other than linear algebra. This lecture provides a basis for further understanding from resources such as "Nanoelectronics and the Meaning of Resistance" and even full-semester undergraduate and graduate course offerings.
The nanoHUB tool "Quantum Dot Lab" allows users to compute the quantum mechanical "particle in a box" problem for a variety of different confinement shapes, such as boxes, ellipsoids, disks, and pyramids. Users can explore, interactively, the energy spectrum and orbital...
