Welcome back from the blur that is July 4th Weekend! Last week, Dap (@dapisdope) sat down with one of REELYDOPE’s shadow investors, Mosie on Over, to talk Rick Famuyiwa’s 2015 film, Dope, and more! In Focal Point discussion, the two discuss the merits, nostalgic elements, and faults of the “indie” coming-of-age film, Dope. While Dap maintains his position from his infamous Blavity screed, Mosie has much fonder feelings about it and says just as much. After the break, the two then discussed Y Combinator’s move to provide UBI (Universal Basic Income) to select families in Oakland. From the merits of the thought experiment to its potentially dangerous implications, they air it out. As always, intros and interludes are by Shruggs. Don’t forget to rate us on ITunes, Stitcher, and wherever else you listen to us! And mark your calendars: After this season of REELYDOPE Radio, we’ll be taking a short-ish hiatus to work on things and plan Season 4!

Adam (@awkeller510) joins Dap (@dapisdope) again on this ep. Together, they talk with the director + producer squad behind BAD RAP, Salima (@SalimaKoroma) & Jaeki (@JaekiCho). BAD RAP is a feature documentary that follows Lyricks, Awkwafina, Dumbfoundead, and Rekstizzy as they make their way through the music industry and hip-hop culture. In the first half, the REELYDOPE crew & BAD RAP team discuss racial dynamics, documentary hurdles, and moving through hip-hop as an Asian-American. Later, the lens is turned inward as Jaeki and Salima speak on the process of making the film itself. To check out more about BAD RAP and how you can bring it to your city, visit www.badrapfilm.com! Don’t forget to rate us on iTunes and Stitcher, and wherever else! We need the reviews to stay on the charts, so help us out yo. And as always, the official hashtag for the show is#reelydoperadio. TW: This episode begins with a reading of the Orlando victim’s names. And the second half of the episode contains discussion of the massacre and tragedy. If you’d like to help families of the victims, here are the resources mentioned on-air: https://www.gofundme.com/OrlandoUnited http://blog.jetblue.com/we-stand-with-orlando/ – This past week has been horrible for everyone with empathy for humans. For us, we had to record a pod about it. Special thanks to @Sahdade for this special request episode. In this ep, Dap (@dapisdope) and Kevin (@kvnyvs) talk about the 1999 film Ghost Dog w/ Forest Whittaker. From Whittaker’s trademark swagger to a deeper discussion of the film’s arthouse qualities, they dug in. After that, Dap & Kevin air out a lot of grief, shock, frustration, and general disgust with the state of America right now. Intros & interludes by Shruggs. This particular episode has taken way too long to finally reach ya’ll. But don’t worry, it’s here now. In this pod from the crates, Dap (@dapisdope) sat down with Mr. West Oakland & host of the “Awkward Convos with Beejus” podcast, Beejus (@Beejus)! In the first half, they chopped it up about how Beejus got into the rap game and his experiences growing, changing, and performing in The Bay’s musical scene. Then, things steer hard left as Dap interrogates Beejus about his hate for Will Ferrell. Other topics include film critic podcast beef, the hyphy movement, and what exactly is under Sway’s hat. [Dap’s Note: I apologize for audio quality. We’re still figuring out our new setup.] What’s blacker than talking about Beyonce over Memorial Day weekend? That’s a trick question. Anyway, we got an amazing roundtable of black women (Betty, Mamou of Nook & Kranny, and filmmaker Shirah Dedman) together to speak on Beyonce’s visual album/statement, Lemonade. It’s unfiltered, raw, honest convo. Enjoy. TW: brief discussion of domestic violence and sexual assault. Intros and interludes by Shruggs.

Okay, we know it took a little longer than usual to post. But that’s because it took us 2 hours to talk this one out! In this episode, Dap (@dapisdope), Betty, and Adam (@awkeller510) debate all things Marvel and Captain America: Civil War. This week Adam (@awkeller510) and Dap (@dapisdope) wanted to talk about Jeremy Saulnier’s films Blue Ruin and Green Room. In addition to talking about the show itself, they dig into the nitty gritty stuff that comes up when you watch a black person in implicit peril on national television. Intro and interludes by Shruggs.
We called in a favor to get Viacom veteran and friend of the show, Tony Ducret (@ducretmedia), on this week. He joined Dap (@dapisdope) and Adam (@awkeller510) to talk Stanley Kubrick’s horror film, The Shining. After that, they talked about Tony’s career, his beginnings, and even got some major key advice for budding film folks. Listen up and take notes, ya’ll! Intros and interludes by @Shrggs.

After 4 episodes of struggling with the Kevin Descardes Curse, we’re byke with our main man and REELYDOPE Creative Director, Kevin (@kvnyvs). Sadly, we lost some quality convo in this episode as well due to some technical difficulties. BUT: The Devil is a lie and still we rise! In this episode, we talk about the 2015 horror comedy/satire film, The Final Girls. After that, we chop it up about Phife Dawg’s death, Africa Bambaata possibly being a very despicable human being, Netflix & chill dates, and more! TW: some convo about sexual assault.
