A disruptive technology is an innovation that helps create new markets and ultimately displaces an earlier technology.  In an era where we are seeing technological innovations move at lightening speed, it is difficult to stay current on the latest disruptive technologies. These are some of the key visionary insights that we gained from a recent podcast interview with Nate Rushfinn, Principal Enterprise Architect at CA Technologies.  Be sure to listen to the full interview below.
Last week, Brian Contos, CISO of the Advanced Threat Protection Group at Blue Coat Systems, discussed how cyberwar has become a great equalizer between nation states. While our understanding of cyberwar and states’ ability to execute a cyberwar strategy are in their infancy, Contos directs our attention to how attacks have shifted from creative mischief to stealing intellectual property, intercepting military communications and the destruction of computer systems.  The recent news about Chinese hackers stealing designs for advanced weapons systems from the Department of Defense and the extent of frustration among agency officials about the scale of cyberthefts is just the latest example. In this guest podcast, Richard Bejtlich, Mandiant’s Chief Security Officer, discusses the latest cyber challenges including cyberwar and China’s cyber espionage units, which were exposed earlier this year in the Mandiant APT1 report. Bejtlich’s podcast appears on Federal Blue Print courtesy of Bloomberg Government.
While conducting incident response work, Mandiant encounters security teams and executives who seem to focus on malware as the defining feature of a compromise. These groups think that the scope of an incident depends on knowing where the intruder installed malware. Knowing where malware was used, and how it was used, is indeed important for effective incident response. Unfortunately, knowledge of malware, however complete, is only half the picture.
As government agencies begin to fully embrace cloud computing for enhanced efficiencies and reducing overall costs, there is a world of challenges and opportunity that come when making this shift. The Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC) provides institutions with an information assurance or computer security curriculum a controlled, competitive environment to assess their student's depth of understanding and operational competency in managing the challenges inherent in protecting a corporate network infrastructure and business information systems. The Department of Homeland Security often plans a key role in these competitions, which grooms the next generation of cyber professionals. Following is a podcast with Ed Rhyne, Program Manager for DHS’ Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency (HSARPA) working within the Cyber Security Division in the Science and Technology Directorate (DHS S&T).
