We're back with the core Substance Team doing a Reflects episode but sadly we are back talking about abuse and how it is mishandled in the Church. Some have already moved on as the Guidepost Solutions Report was released a whole month ago but we wanted to take some time to read it (though not in its 288 page entirety), digest it, and see what others were saying instead of just adding to the pile of hot takes that are out there. The grievous actions (and inactions) described in the report are great and we hope that we've treated them with the measured thoughtfulness they deserve. It's not a fun topic but if you have any thoughts you want to share with us, feel free to email us or leave a voicemail (it is 2022, after all). We are excited to welcome back Kyle Strobel to The Substance! Kyle is a preacher, the Associate Professor of Spiritual Theology and Formation at Biola's Talbot School of Theology, and the author (and co-author) of several excellent books. You may remember Kyle from when we had him on back on Episode 66 (Listen here!) and talked about our relationships with power. We highly recommend checking that out if you haven't yet! This time Kyle joins us to talk about something we'd all like to have a better handle on- prayer. Topics include: What's on the line when it comes to our prayer lives, "the good news" of prayer, why we shouldn't try to "fix" ourselves, the role of personal and communal lament in our prayers, and more! We hope you enjoy and are encouraged by this. If you are consider sharing it with your friends and family as word of mouth is the best way to spread the show! Scheduling Update!

2022-05-2910:09

Hey everyone! It's a little different this week. Last week we announced that, for now, The Substance will be transitioning to a biweekly release schedule. We love doing the podcast and putting it out for free but we all have a lot more responsibilities than we did when we relaunched and in order to continue to put out biblical, thoughtful, human, and substantive content on a regular basis we needed to make this change. Episode 102 will come out next week and we will be on an every other week release schedule going forward for the time being! In the meantime, we have a library of 100+ episodes that are designed to be evergreen. Feel free to go back and check out the episodes you may have missed and share them with your friends & family who would appreciate them. And if you'd like to help us ramp things back up release-wise, this may be a good time to join us as a monthly supporter on Anchor! It's been a while since we've covered a classic book on the show and we are excited to shine the spotlight on one that was a first time read for all 3 of us! G. K. Chesterton's Orthodoxy is a classic of Christian apologetics and has been in print ever since it was originally published. Joining us this week is Trevin Wax. Trevin is the VP of Research & Resource Development at the North American Mission Board, visiting professor at Wheaton College, regular columnist at The Gospel Coalition, and author of several titles including a beautiful new Annotated Edition of Orthodoxy from B&H Academic. Orthodoxy was an absolute pleasure to dive into and we had a wonderful time with Trevin. We hope you enjoy the show and be sure to share it with a friend! *Special Announcement* For the foreseeable future, The Substance will be transitioning to a bi-weekly release schedule in order to make our deadlines and keep things substantive on the show while managing all of our other non-podcasting responsibilities properly. We are grateful to folks who listen and pray that the podcast will continue to encourage the Church and be a light in the world for a very long time. We just want to pace ourselves! Welcome back to another episode!  We were super excited and blessed by our guest's this week John Onwuchekua (John O for short) and Keith Pinkney from the AMAZING podcast Windows & Mirrors where they say, "The Bible is more like a window than it is a mirror. We come to it to look through it and see God. We don't come to it primarily to look at it and see ourselves." We had great conversation learning about John and Keith's history, the vision and impact of the podcast, and so much more!! Let the record show that Trevor is out this week because he was attending a John Mayer show (featuring previous Substance Shoutout recipient Yebba) and not all the bad guesses that Philip & Vincent came up with. We thought that we'd maybe do a Topic Toss Up show when we started recording but it quickly became apparent that we'd be spending the whole episode on the most recent Julie Roys article about the abuse and cover ups at John MacArthur's church, Grace Community Church. To be clear, while we believe that the testimonies, documents, and facts show that John MacArthur and GCC both handled and are currently handling this in an extremely inappropriate, harmful, and ultimately ungodly manner, our goal is not to simply target and "take down" their character or ministry. Hopefully, shining a light on such horrific things will be a catalyst to humility and accountability and eventual repentance, from JMac & GCC as well as untold numbers of other churches with similar underlying problems that lead to similar devastating situations. Your feedback on this issue is more than welcome! We encourage you to read the report in its entirety, listen to our full discussion, and then send us a DM, email, or voicemail at your convenience. Happy April Fools' Day! This is a silly idea we had way back in 2019 before we took our unplanned year and a half hiatus (see "Special Annoucement" between episodes 12 & 13) but we're happy to finally share this very bad movie with you all! Manos (Spanish for "hands"): The Hands of Fate is a famously bad movie resurrected by the Mystery Science Theater 3000 team in 1993. It was made by a fertilizer salesman on a bet and it really shows. But even though every aspect of it is a train wreck, there's something undeniably charming, and human, about this very very bad movie. And we are also excited to have a friend of ours from way back join us for this one! Jacob Berardi is a longtime friend who we have watched loads of movies with who has been working in the film business for the last 10+ years primarily as a camera opperator and cinematographer. This week we dive more into a topic that affects us all to varying degrees and that can be difficult to talk about, doubt. Austin is a pastor at Vista Community Church in Texas and identifies as Young, Restless, and No Longer Reformed. He is also the author of the challenging and enjoyable book Faith in the Shadows: Finding Christ in the Midst of Doubt at IVP. We talk about a number of ways that doubt can manifest and how we respond, and while we may not agree on everything, our conversation was highly enjoyable and we hope you feel the same way! 93: Reflects | Prooftexting

2022-03-2001:04:56

Website It's been a minute since we've dropped a Reflects (shoutout to all our excellent guests lately!) but we're back this week talking about a common pitfall (and accusation) related to Bible study and public theological discourse, prooftexting. It can be easy to read one passage, or even a portion of a passage, by itself and come away from it with an interpretation that is unsupported by the context. And "prooftexting" can also be an simple accusation to lob at someone in a public debate in order to attack their credibility. On this episode we look at why it matters, how to avoid it, and when it is and isn't appropriate to charge someone else with it. If you're listening, we love sharing The Substance with you! If you enjoy it, please consider sharing it with the people in your life. This week we are excited to share a wonderful conversation we recently had with Tim Whitaker, Founder of The New Evangelicals, an online community for folks who are deconstructing their faith and finding themselves without an immediate spiritual community. We talk about a wide variety of subjects including Tim's story (which is eerily similar to several aspects of our's), how the Bible is used, the importance of honesty & humility, the danger of partisan politics, maintaining healthy relationships (and boundaries) with people we have strong social/political disagreements with, and more. And make sure you stick around for the story Tim tells at the end, probably the best answer we've had to a final question in the history of the podcast. We are very happy to welcome our friend Brett McCracken back for his fourth appearance on The Substance (and his third Malick film)! Brett is a longtime film critic, the Senior Editor for Arts & Culture at The Gospel Coalition, an author of 4 books currently, and a pastor at his Church in Brea CA. Terrence Malick surprised and delighted film lovers in 1998 with The Thin Red Line for many reasons, in large part because he had not made a film in 20 years. What he delivered was beautiful, meditative consideration of war as natural phenomenon. The film is both tragic and hopeful and something that is particularly affecting to watch during a time where nations are engaged in public acts of war. Having trained in History, Communication Studies and Sociology from Yale, Northwestern, and University of Virginia, her research is oriented around the rapidly evolving digital technology industry and how the adoption of social media and digital devices fundamentally alters the landscapes of family, community, and organizational life. This week she joins us to talk about that work and her book Restless Devices: Recovering Personhood, Presence, and Place in the Digital Age (IVP). The books two main focal points are the questions: What kind of people are we becoming with personal technologies in hand? And who do we really want to be? The timing on this show is funny because we recorded this almost exactly a month and a half ago and the clip of John MacArthur's remarks on religious freedom has just gone viral a but this week on Christian Twitter. We promise we're not chasing trends, rather just trying to address and discuss important theological and practical matters of the day. Jeremiah 29:5 Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat what they produce. 1 Peter 1:17 And if you address as Father the one who impartially judges according to each one's work, live out the time of your temporary residence here in reverence. The first Matrix movie was released in March of 1999 and was an instant sensation. Movies, and in many ways our culture at large, would be forever changed. Two weeks ago, 18 years after the last Matrix film we had, the fourth installment, The Matrix Resurrections, premiered theatrically and on HBO Max. Returning guest, Eugene Park, joins us as we dive back down the rabbit hole! Reactions from both fans and critics has been split on this film (much like the second and third films in the series), but we think that there's a lot here to be explored: Why does this film exist? Did Warner Brothers demand it or was there an artistic vision from the original creator? Why do some seem to hate this so much? What does it have to say about the creative difficulties & shortcomings of a culture obsessed with more? Have the original films had more of a positive or negative legacy since they've come out and how does that affect the folks involved in creating it? Why do the action scenes feel a bit different in this one? We cover these and other topics, while still leaving plenty of things on the table! In October, the Rise & Fall of Mars Hill podcast had a story about a faithful church-planting pastor who lived his life in obscurity. His ministry had started off rocky because he graduated seminary at the same time that his wife left and divorced him for someone else. Today the guys consider the standards set for elders and church leaders, especially with regard to divorce.
