Gery Deer sat down and spoke with Hans Marlette, the Executive Director of Day of Caring 365.  The Day of Caring 365 Foundation was founded in 1991 to foster volunteerism and provide resources for communities in need.  Day of Caring 365 is a nonprofit organization that has provided funding for food banks and shelters in local communities utilizing volunteers and donations for charity. We have expanded to include Roberta's pantry which helps to provide hygiene products for many people in our community that do not have access to hygiene items that we take for granted. Every year the Day of Caring 365 Foundation hosts pancake brunches throughout the Dayton area to raise money for their partner organizations.  Last year, they raised over $ 21,000 and 100% of those profits go to the local community partner organizations. For more information or to sign up to become a volunteer, Contact us at Dayofcaring20@gmail.com to find out what you can do to make a difference. For Information or Pancake Brunch Site LocationsCall 937-931-2850 or visit ourwebsite at www.dayofcaring.usJulie Barth - co -host and producerGery Deer - host and director Graphics by Taylor Huggins©2022 Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness, all rights reserved.Check us out on Facebook and Instagram @oldnerdfitnessIf you would like to be a guest on Old Nerd in the Gym email us at oldnerdfitness@gmail.com.
This month our guest on Old Nerd in the Gym is Nick Wilson, a Certified EPT Practitioner at the Better Days Center in Centerville, Ohio. Nick Wilson is a co-owner of Better Days Center, located in Centerville Ohio and he has been practicing Emotional Polarity Therapy techniques since 2019 when he joined his wife and business founder, Chanelle Wilson.Nick shares what he and his wife Chanelle do to help people every day. Better Days Center’s EPT practitioners offer children, teens and adults a holistic option to traditional talk & drug therapy. Emotional Polarity Therapy techniques are an alternative to traditional talk therapy and uses many holistic practices including the therapeutic use of magnets. Polarity therapy is referred to as "energy medicine" because it uses several techniques to influence energy flow and energy balance in the body. Practitioners believe that energy imbalances, disturbances, or blockages result in disease and can be corrected.EPT has been successfully ending suffering in adults and children in clinical environments for more than 25 years. The immediate result is profound, empowering relief. The long-term result is permanent positive behavior changes, a healthier life and a better world.  EPT uses four major steps to forgiveness and healing including focus, find, fix and forgive. These four steps can release pain from old traumas, forgiveness for self and others and ultimately lead to a more positive happy lifestyle moving forward.  In 1993 Annette Cargioli began a new healing initiative in emotional healthcare. Adults and children were coming to see me to heal physical and emotional pain by releasing “old hurt” through forgiveness. She became known as The Forgiveness Doctor and  called her  discovery Emotional Polarity Technique or EPT. Since that time, She has trained hundreds of people to help others using these EPT techniques. For more information go to www.visitbetterdayscenter.comJulie Barth - co -host and producerGery Deer - host and director Graphics by Taylor Huggins©2022 Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness, all rights reserved.Check us out on Facebook and Instagram @oldnerdfitnessJulie Barth - co -host and producerGery Deer - host and director Graphics by Taylor Huggins©2022 Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness, all rights reserved.Check us out on Facebook and Instagram @oldnerdfitnessIf you would like to be a guest on Old Nerd in the Gym email us at oldnerdfitness@gmail.com.

For those caregivers dealing with someone suffering from a debilitating or terminal illness, hospice care can be one of the most valuable services to both patient and family. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of misinformation regarding hospice so we decided to tackle this difficult subject in this episode of the Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast.Hospice is much more than "end of life care" for terminal patients. Services range from palliative, in-home, and in-facility care, to grief counseling and family support. There are more than 5,000 hospice organizations in the United States, many of which are not-for-profit organizations. Our guest for this episode of Old Nerd in the Gym Podcast is Kim Vesey, RN, CHPN, MS, general manager of Ohio's Hospice of Dayton, in Dayton, Ohio. Kim has been a hospice nurse for 37 years, starting into that area of practice only one year out of nursing school. But Kim isn't just a healthcare professional working in the hospice industry. Unfortunately, she's also had personal experience, going through the loss of her husband and daughter. Her experiences personally and professionally have given her insight that helps families make informed choices while maintaining emotional strength and dignity. Hospice care is not something arrived at lightly by patients or families. One of the most difficult aspects of caring for his parents was when Gery Deer's family had to make the difficult decision to involve hospice support. In the case of his mother, he had the support of his father, close cousin, and siblings, as well as adult nieces, to make those choices. But when it came time to care for his father, he made that decision alone - and without hesitation. The benefits of hospice care to ensuring the quality of life and palliative support were invaluable. After his father's death, hospice services included grief counseling, vital to dealing with caregiver survival issues like guilt, grief, and depression. Experiencing loss is challenging for anyone, at any age, but can be especially difficult for young children. Sadness, fear, and loneliness can overwhelm a child who's lost someone close to them. To help grieving children, Kim has written a series of illustrated books, beginning with, "What Cloud Is My Mommy In." Beautifully illustrated by Amy Gantt, the "What Cloud" series deals with the loss of parents, grandparents, and siblings, through the eyes of a child. “Gratitude is a quality similar to electricity: It must be produced and discharged and used up in order to exist at all.” —William FaulknerThere’s no denying the last 18 months have been challenging for everyone. Gratitude has been something that might seem elusive to a great many people. Strangely, when times are the toughest gratitude is most important. Many people treat gratitude as something transactional or focused within their religious beliefs but instead, it must be an active part of our day-to-day life. Those who practice gratitude are more likely to feel more positive and even show reduced signs of stress. Gratitude is not just saying “thank you,” but playing an active role in the positive achievements of others - even if it’s small or even unseen. In this episode of Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast, your hosts Gery Deer and Julie Barth talk about gratitude in some most unusual ways. They’ll get into what it means to practice gratitude, beyond the practical definition of the concept, and discuss where it fits into the lives of the devout and those without religion at all.Old Nerd in the Gym is written and co-hosted by Gery L.  According to the most recent set of data released by the Kaiser Family Foundation (dated August 18, 2021), only 72% of adults in the United States have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination. While this is an improvement over some earlier numbers, cases of covid are skyrocketing with nearly 3,100 new cases being reported daily in Ohio alone (ODH). Constant politicizing and the spread of misinformation on the issues of personal protective devices, such as masks, and the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines has led to an increase in the spread of this terrible disease. A great number of medical experts feel the government tried to bring the country back to "normal" far too soon before the virus had been contained to a manageable level. Cries of personal liberty and economic subjugation forced politicians to bend and ease restrictions, discontinue mask mandates and social distancing requirements, and even urged some legislators to pass laws preventing schools and businesses from forcing the use of safety measures by students and patrons. On our premiere episode for season 3 of Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast, your hosts Gery Deer and Julie Barth speak with Dr. Leann Poston, former pediatric physician and assistant dean of the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. Dr. Poston talks about the need for people to seek out factual medical information and avoid the politics of the COVID problem to help ensure the safety, not only of themselves and their family but others who may be more at risk. In this no-nonsense discussion, Gery and Dr. Poston discuss how the vaccines work, dispel many of the myths surrounding their safety and effectiveness, and cover where to find the most accurate, non-political information.About Our GuestLeann Poston, MD, is a licensed physician in Ohio who holds an MBA and an M.Ed. She is a full-time medical communications writer and educator who researches and writes about medicine, education, and healthcare administration. After practicing in a physician group practice for eleven years, Leann taught students at all academic levels, wrote curricula for both medical and business colleges, and served as an assistant dean at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. Leann’s writing and teaching experiences have led to several awards in the education profession. Our appreciation to Dr. Poston for assisting with the production of this episode. This edition of the Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast was recorded at the studios of DATV, with our thanks.Old Nerd in the Gym is written and co-hosted by Gery L. One of the greatest stressors of modern life is money. For caregivers, their family, and other members of their support system, money can be the bridge or barrier to better health care, more services, and domestic stability. In this first episode of the third season of Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast, Gery and Julie talk with Bob Stolz, a good friend of the Deer family and skilled financial professional. Bob shares his take on how to look out for the bottom line as a caregiver and as someone looking out for someone else’s interests. The Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast is an educational production of GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd., copyright 2021, all rights reserved. Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast Description - Season 2: Episode 13  The Physical Therapist and the Old NerdIn our Season 2 Finale, Gery and Julie welcome Dr. Chelsea Walter, a physical therapist from the Lebanon, Ohio area who has started her own, in-home/in-gym practice. Chelsea talks PT and the various differences between therapies as well as helping you to understand how it’s much more than just something you do after an injury. About Healthy Movement Physical Therapy and Wellness and Dr. Chelsea WalterHealthy Movement Physical Therapy and Wellness, LLC is a mobile, concierge PT, and wellness practice founded by Dr. Chelsea Walter in 2020. This practice was born out of wanting to help people in a way that was lacking with traditional physical therapy. Chelsea spent five years working in an outpatient PT clinic for a local hospital network. During this time, she learned that the insurance-based model squeezed too many patients into one day and left the therapist minimal personal time with the client. The choice to go out-of-network was easy. Outside of the corporate model and without insurance dictating care, she is now able to give clients the attention they deserve and to treat them as more than just an injury or another insurance claim. (On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/healthymovementPT)  FAQs - https://www.healthymovementpt.com/faqsChelsea’s background is in physical therapy with an emphasis on the treatment of spinal conditions. She graduated from Saint Louis University in 2014 with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy and completed undergraduate work at the same institution. From 2018 to 2019, she was a post-graduate resident with the McKenzie Institute where she achieved certification in the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) and board certification in orthopedics (OCS). Chelsea enjoys working with clients who are active in the gym or with recreational sports. She has led an active lifestyle from early on in life and enjoys hiking, travel, and spending time with family. Graphics by Taylor HugginsOld Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast, it’s associated trade and service marks and all content connected thereto are copyright 2020 GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd. This episode of the Old Nerd in the Gym involves grief and loss.  It may be uncomfortable for some listeners. Listener discretion is advised.  A great deal of the Old Nerd content has been generated from our founder, Gery Deer, and his experience caring for his parents. Sadly, his father, Gary, Sr., passed away on July 1st, 2020 and that left Gery with a new perspective on his experience. In this episode, he describes his father’s death as a “deafening absence,” referring, not just to his passing, but to the changes in Gery’s daily routine; a routine that has had to be altered with every phase of his father’s decline. All of a sudden, he has no one to take care of, his time is his (except for work, and the odd activity in dealing with his dad’s passing). There’s a hole - one that’s filling with doubt, second-guessing, anger, sadness, and guilt. Gery and his co-host, Julie Barth, talk about some of the feelings and experiences a caregiver can go through after their family member/patient has died and how Gery is dealing with it. They’ll cover the anxiety and grief leading up to that point (known as anticipatory grief) as well as how to deal with the second-guessing and feelings that you may not have done enough. Old Nerd in the Gym is written and co-hosted by Gery L. The world around us has changed in ways no one could have predicted even several weeks before. As more and more communities are ordered to remain at home to help minimize the spread of the COVID-19 virus, stress levels are rising, and so is the clutter. One of the greatest challenges for caregivers is identifying resources available for various services, from home health care to meals on wheels. Struggling to find where to get help can increase stress and affect the health of both the caregiver and your family member. For this reason, most regions have some type of “agency on aging” that provides a clearinghouse and specialty services for seniors and caregivers. These organizations are typically not-for-profit and offer everything from basic information and education to low-cost or no-cost home care, emergency alert equipment and more.Jeff Schairbaum is the educational and outreach liaison for the Greene County Council on Aging (GCCOA) based in Xenia, Ohio. The GCCOA is one of countless agencies around the country that provides resources and education to caregivers and seniors. Jeff joins Gery Deer and Julie Barth for this edition of Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast to discuss what organizations like his can provide in general and, for our local listeners, his agency specifically. For detailed information on service resources for seniors and caregivers in your area do a Google search for “senior services” or “caregiver support” and use your city in the criteria. For more information on the Council on Aging in Greene County visit: www.GCCOA.orgOld Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast is a production of Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness, LLC, and GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd., Copyright 2019 - all rights reserved. Yoga is a Hindu practice which helps to focus the mind, body, and spirit. Those who practice yoga will attest to its benefits in their overall wellness and how it helps ease the mind. In this episode, Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast hosts Gery Deer and Julie Barth join their own yoga instructor (sometimes referred to as a “yogi”), Carmen Milano at one of her practice spaces in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Carmen grew up in Chicago but has lived in Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Portland, and Skipperville, Alabama. But 20 years ago, decided to put roots down in Yellow Springs. In her own words, “At 49, in the pursuit of aging well and as gracefully as possible, I began to intentionally move my body through walking often, riding my bike around the village, and practicing yoga.”Eventually, she began to teach the yoga classes she found so beneficial. Her class members frequently share stories of health challenges and what benefits yoga has brought to them. “I love being included in the process and journey of living well through yoga,” she told us. Today, Carmen teaches at the Antioch Wellness Center at Antioch College and at the Kula Cooperative. She has taken time out of her busy schedule and opened her doors at Kula Cooperative to share her insight on the benefits of Yoga. Production Note: This podcast was recorded in the main studio of Kula Cooperative. Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast is a production of Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness, LLC, and GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd., Copyright 2019 - all rights reserved. Here’s a little more about our guest. Shannan started her fitness journey in 2012 when she weighed 250 pounds. She started working with a personal trainer once a week and changed her diet completely. She was able to lose 110 pounds through weightlifting and changing her diet. In 2015, Shannan became a personal trainer in 2015 and began Powerlifting. At age 45 her personal best meet weight was 715 lbs. in squat, deadlift and bench press. She switched to boxing at Drakes in 2015. Shannan began taking classes every day and fell in love with the workout and the sport. She found herself in her first knockout in 2016 and has done 4 since. She is a USA boxing coach and trains fighters at Drakes. She loves helping people reach their fitness goals. If you’re in the Dayton, Ohio area, check out Drake’s, you can find them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=125966294135526Special Thanks to Drake's Downtown Gym for opening their doors to us so kindly.Old Nerd in the Gym is written and co-hosted by Gery L. This is a fun compilation of all the times we went off the rails and got very goofy while recording Season 1 of the Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness podcast.  I laughed editing this together and we hope you laugh as well. At the end of the gag reel is a little teaser about our next season of Old Nerd and what is up next for us.  Old Nerd in the Gym is written and co-hosted by Gery L.
