When it comes to classic RPG series, Final Fantasy is always in the conversation. This long running series has achieved LEGENDARY status with 16 main titles and a Bahamut-sized hoard of sequels and spin-offs. This week, with the help of our Retroid Bobby MacGibbon, we'll spotlight our favorite games, characters and even summon monsters in the series. Even before the internet, rumors about weird stuff in video games were always swirling around the playground. Sometimes it was how to get a new character or access to part of a stage. Other times it would be a code for more lives, a secret boss fight or even just some crazy glitch. But how many of those tantalizing tricks and tidbits ended up being true in the end? Some? Most? NONE? One things for sure, whether we 100% believed the rumor, a metric tonne of us ran home to try to find out ourselves! For this episode, we present 12 such urban legends for your consideration. And later on, after the OCTOPONDER THIS, you'll get Coopster Gold's second installment of "I'VE GOT ISSUES"! ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen) • Coopster Gold (join) • Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile Send us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/retro-ridoctopus/28e1ddc1-13ca-4f75-9310-1574b633e8f7
With host 8-Bit Alchemy at the wheel, the crew hits the road. We've got plenty of snacks, a trunk full of AA batteries and our favorite classic portable video game systems! Our companions are the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, the DS, the Game Gear, the PSP and on this long and lonesome highway, we're gonna play 'em all! Oh did we mention that Nintenjoe hopped in at the last minute? Later on we'll do the Octoponder thing before Parasite Steve debuts his brand new B-segment Monochrome Manor! ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen) • Coopster Gold (join) • Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile Send us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/retro-ridoctopus/3150b0bc-e083-4f42-a9e5-c5e4373f3e1b
With the Green Witch of the Shire (AKA Greenie) on deck, our new host Coopster Gold takes the helm for the first time, setting his spyglass on those swashbuckling, scallywags that once sailed the seven seas. YARRR, of course we be talking pirates! After some basic history on the real deal, we begin building our own personal crews (fantasy football style)... choosing a ship, animal mascot, 2 crew members, a first mate and of course, a Captain to keep 'em all in line. The characters are chosen from all corners of pop culture so you never know who's gonna be mentioned next! And after all that and an Octoponder, we have another guest B-segment. This time from an old friend who's name rhymes with Brintenjoe... ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen) • Coopster Gold (join) • Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile Send us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/retro-ridoctopus/de6c3294-a51f-4424-b609-0a03cfba4fd7
Sometimes, bad movies are the most fun you'll have in front of a small screen. All you gotta do is grab some like-minded friends and good times can be had by all. And while your personal mileage may vary, is there a science to the phenomenon? A credible explanation as to what separates the Good-Bad from the downright awful? Eh, who cares. In the spirit of liking what you like, we're gonna shout out a slew of movies we love in spite of their flaws! Along for the ride is the most excellent author/editor Ed Kurtz! And later on, don't miss the debut of our brand new B-Segment as Justin Cooper tells you why he's GOT ISSUES. Snag your copy of Ed's new anthology "In the Cold, Cold Ground: An Anthology of New England Horror" over at the Zon and other fine book sellers! ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen) • Coopster Gold (join) • Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile Send us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/retro-ridoctopus/bc1bc955-04f8-4242-92d2-d2c0a590d500
It's season 6 and the start of a whole new era of Ridoctopus with our new host Justin Cooper (AKA Coopster Gold)! Our man from Shytown wastes no time settling in as we celebrate some mean pinball video games. But there's no need to drive to your nearest amusement hall because these games can be played on such home platforms as the original Nintendo, various Game Boys, the TurboGrafx-16 and even MS-DOS! And after we drop all the digital silver balls, we've got our first ever guest B-Segment as our pal Russ Lyman (from The Weekly Warp Pipe) says DIE MONSTER! You can find the video that inspired Russ's appearance on his YouTube channel! Be sure to like and subscribe to keep your world fun, bit by bit! ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen) • Coopster Gold (join) • Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile Send us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/retro-ridoctopus/877d1459-c47a-4dc2-be1a-88a158f1b2a9
What can we say? We just didn't want this season to end... After copious amounts of reminiscing over another amazing year, we dive into our annual final topic. Like every year, we asked you for voice mails, giving your quick reviews of a classic movie you watched for the first time this year. Every single year, this block gets longer and longer and season 5 was no exception. Thank you for coming out in droves to be a part of the show and for helping to make Retro Ridoctopus what it is. Retroids... this one is for you. ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen)• Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile
To celebrate the release of Godzilla Minus One and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, we've got an episode so full of kaiju mayhem, we had to split it into two parts! Back for the conclusion of this epic journey is our buddy Aldo, who continues to flex his superfan knowledge along the way. This time, Nintenjoe and Parasite Steve deliver the goods on the Millennium and MonsterVerse eras respectively, before this journey reaches it's final destination with the films that don't fit so neatly into the larger sections. Don't worry, we didn't forget Shin!
Along for this epic journey is our pal Aldo, who takes us through the first 15 Godzilla movies (which comprise what is known as the Showa period) starting with the original Gojira in 1954, and ending with 1975's Terror of Mechagodzilla. Then your host 8-Bit Alchemy takes over, delivering every earth-shattering footstep of the Heisei era, which began with 1984's Return of Godzilla (known in America as Godzilla 1985) all the way through 1995's Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. Look out for our follow-up part 2 where Nintenjoe and Parasite Steve will get around to the year 2,000 and beyond! It's GODZILLAAAAAAA!!!! ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen)• Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile
The bummer is we have to bid farewell to our brother Nintenjoe, as this is his final time hosting the show. But being the totally radical dude that he is, he straps on the blue mask to lead us one final time into the land of nostalgia, as we celebrate the cinematic films of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Bringing the pizzas is our very good friend, Justin Cooper (from the Epic Tales From The Sewers Podcast), who practically exudes the green ooze of Turtle fandom from every pore! Trust us, dudes, this episode is so jam packed with Mutant Turtles and Teenage Ninjas, you'll have no choice but to say COWABUNGA! ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen)• Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile
Special effects titan Ray Harryhausen is rightfully renowned for pushing the medium of stop motion animation and single-handedly creating some of the most memorable on-screen monsters ever captured on screen. For this epic journey, we welcome back Scott Clevenger (from the Slumgullion podcast) to celebrate the mythic life and career of this legendary artist. After starting with a little history on the man himself, we'll each present one of Harryhausen's 17 films. Making sure to keep his wonderful, if monstrous, creations in the spotlight. Later on we have the results of the HARRYHAUSEN BATTLE ROYAL poll which we posted to the Facebook group before ending things on Nintenjoe's (hopefully not final) B-Segment. On Twitter (X), be sure to follow Jeff @TheSlumgullion and Scott @Scottclevenger AND... you can and should listen to The Slumgullion anywhere you listen to our show and check out their website! ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen)• Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile
Here it is, horror fans... the second half of our first (maybe only) two part episode! 8-Bit Alchemy and "All Hallows" Steve aren't done screaming out obscure horror games, in fact, this episode covers four more! Some are more obscure than others but all are worth celebrating. We even drop some honorable mentions along the way, so strap back on your chainsaw hands and buckle up, because the ride is far from over! ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen)• Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile
Our first ever two part episode starts with a massive tribute to the Grandfather of all Gaming Gore, SPLATTERHOUSE! We'll take you game by game, room by viscera-painted room, through Rick's red-knuckled journey as he takes up the TERRORMASK to save his beloved Jennifer from the forces of EVIL! After that, we'll each drop one OBSCURE horror game that we think deserves to have more eyeballs on it before ending things on the OCTOPONDER. We had over 60 responses this time and we're gonna read all of your amazing answers to the question: "What was the first game that truly scared you?" If you're looking for even more Video Game Horror Obscura, have no fear because PART 2 is coming up shortly and will include 4 more games to sink your collection teeth into! ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen)• Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile
On another toy-centric episode of the Retro Ridoctopus cephalopodcast, Nintenjoe takes the reins as we present some of our favorite Retro Toy Lines. Here we aren't just spotlighting one or two toys, but the entire lines as a whole. Along for the ride is "Mrs. Alchemy", Steph, AKA "Green Witch Of The North", AKA "GREENIE", in her first appearance on the show! She adds an incredibly valuable voice to the discussion, talking passionately about toys that none of us ever had! And as always, we have the Octoponder, this week's B-Segment (from 8-Bit Alchemy) and if you make it all the way to the end, a very important announcement regarding the future of the podcast. ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen)• Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile Retro Ridoctopus is part of the Dorkening Podcast Network, the Inebri-Art Podcast Network and is brought to you by Deadly Grounds Coffee!
In space, no one can hear you scream... ...but this is only a podcast, so you don't have to worry about that. With the help of Xenomorph-superfan and movie-dissecting guru, El Goro (from the Talk Without Rhythm Podcast), we're going to spill the ovomorphs on the entire Alien franchise! Starting with Ridley Scott's horror sci-fi masterpiece ALIEN (1979) and going all the way through ALIEN: COVENANT (2017). Truly, this episode is the perfect organism. Listen to El Goro every week on the TALK WITHOUT RHYTHM PODCAST!
In every medium where superheroes exist, there are characters that spoof the genre. Some, (like the Tick), carry their own parody comics & shows. But others exist within the world of their property (as a show within a show) where these meta heroes are enjoyed by the already fictional characters of that property (like Radioactive Man is to Bart Simpson). So, up and atom, gentle listener, because in this episode, we gonna cover it all! Crammed in between is an Octoponders where we ask you to get creative and come up with a parody superhero of your own! And later on, Parasite Steve covers the ninja-tastic Cyber Shadow on another installment of Retro Nouveau.
If you already feel old, how does it feel to know that the Super Nintendo came out 32 years ago? For many of us, the 90s were defined by the 16-bit generation of video games. The successor to the enormously successful Nintendo Entertainment System was of course the good old SNES. A system that would push the envelopes the look, sound and overall experience of what a home video game could be, and go on to become a legend in it's own right. For this episode, we cover some of the history, the technical specs (what was MODE 7 anyway?) and, of course, some of our favorite games! Expect some obvious classics as well as some deep cuts because your Octo-Hosts are huge fans of the good old SNES! Later on, we'll get to this week's Octo-Ponder as well as a little COMPOSE YO'SELF from 8bit (or should we say 16bit) Alchemy!
Greetings, Mad Marvelites! We've got a whole action packed episode all about video games that feature your favorite fearless super heroes like Spider-Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk and of course, those marauding mutants, the Uncanny X-Men! We'll start at the very beginning and bring you through the glory days of the arcades, to 16 bit home consoles like the Super Nintendo and Genesis, all the way to the Playstation and beyond! Along for this jam-packed journey, all the way from Amalga-Mania, is the Boy Wonderful himself, Ian Wallace--whose valuable voice and endless expertise may prove more valuable than a fistful of infinity gems! So power up you arc reactors and throw on a pair of ruby quartz glasses because this episode is truly one for the books. The funny books, that is. It's music time again, folks! Nintenjoe's popular recurring Themes From a Memory is BACK. This time, the mission was to choose title screen music from our favorite video games! And to do so, we welcome back our old pal (and 4th host of the first 2 seasons of this very show) Synopsis Grim AKA Boss Rush Mode! Later, we play an 11 minute long MEGA block of Retroid picks and 8-Bit Alchemy delivers a Retro Nouveau! It's all like, SUPER crazy!!!
