Simon Hrobelko is the owner of My Podiatrist Canberra and the nail surgery clinic Ingrown Toenail Care. Prior to becoming a podiatrist, Simon served in the Australian Army and spent 11 years as a Crime Scene Investigator for the New South Wales Police and the Australian Federal Police. Simon feels there are many similarities between being a CSI and a Podiatrist; both require good communication skills. You must keep gathering the evidence and asking the right questions, and everything will start to reveal itself. They call that Deductive Reasoning. Are you sick of having a landlord and paying dead rent? If so, this episode might give you the nudge to start considering purchasing your premises, becoming your own landlord, and building long-term assets.  In this episode, I am joined by four podiatrists who have all taken the plunge into property ownership, and they would encourage every podiatrist to consider doing the same.   My Guests are: Jessica Haydock - Sole Focus Podiatry, Toowoomba, Queensland.  Jonathan Small - Health First Foot & Gait Clinic, Southam, UK.  Elan Silver - Silver Podiatry, Perth, Western Australia.  Chloe Wear - The Woodvale Podiatrist, Perth, Western Australia.  I asked them all the same five questions; however, there were a few random questions in between.  1. How many years did you rent before purchasing your premises? 2. What prompted you to buy, and was there a specific trigger? 3. From memory, were your repayments more or less than your rent or the same? 4. What are the biggest benefits of owning your premises? 5. Do you have any property purchasing tips? If you have any questions about this episode, you can contact me at tyson@podiatrylegends.com 2-Day Podiatry Business Reboot (26th – 27th July) 2024 – CAIRNS This is the best two-day podiatry training program in the world, and it has been designed just for podiatrists. Jonathan Small joins Tyson E Franklin on the Podiatry Legends Podcast to discuss a pervasive myth in the professional world: the idea that a business's location is the critical determinant of its success and fee structure. Jonathan debunks this, suggesting that the true driver of success is the business owner's mindset. He shares insights from his extensive experience, including the notion that prioritising personal happiness and aligning one's practice with personal values are more important than the business's geographical location. The discussion covers various examples, from restaurants in remote locations charging premium prices to successful businesses thriving despite being in supposedly unfavourable areas. Jonathan emphasises the importance of marketing, value proposition, and the ability to adapt and evolve a business according to changing times and personal growth. Tyson and Jonathan also share personal stories of overcoming discrimination, prejudice, and financial challenges, underscoring the importance of resilience, self-belief, and the impact of one's surroundings on personal and professional development. They highlight the necessity of surrounding oneself with positive influences and continuously striving for self-improvement and professional excellence. The episode serves as a reminder that limitations are often self-imposed. With the right mindset and strategic approach, podiatrists can create thriving businesses that reflect their values and goals, regardless of location. Do you believe there are good, bad and difficult patients, and possibly many variations in between? In episode 307, I shared my thoughts on good, bad and difficult patients based on my clinical and business experiences. As expected, some podiatrists agreed wholeheartedly with my comments, while others did not agree, which was great.  This prompted getting a broader perspective on this topic by producing a group episode with eight guests, split over two episodes – This is PART TWO. It’s important to note that my guests’ comments are their opinions based on individual beliefs, values and personal experiences; no one is right or wrong, and you have the right to agree or disagree with their comments. Dr Rob Conenello has always had the mantra, ‘Do Great Things’, and after overcoming Stage 4 Throat Cancer, where he was only given a 20% survival rate, he chose not to let statistics get in the way of his ambitions to live a full life with his young family and to pursue his podiatry career and goals. He has gone on to ‘Do Great Things’ himself and encourages others to do the same. Dr Rob Conenello is a sports podiatrist and owner of Orangetown Podiatry, New York. He is the Global Clinical Advisor at Special Olympics International and is a Past President of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. He is also an Honorary Surgeon for the New York Police Department. In this episode, we discuss: What he has learnt from other podiatrists (Doug Ritchie, Richard Blake, Ivan Bristow, Simon Bartold, Mike Donato, and others). Starting as a volunteer and working his way through the state, national and internal levels of sports medicine. Getting nervous before speaking (even on podcasts). Orthotics is not sports podiatry. Learning from retailers (shoe stores), physical therapists, and athletic events. You can’t do everything in podiatry, so instead, focus on what brings you joy and happiness. It’s okay to say NO to certain things; one of the first things he said NO to was surgery. Helping athletes reach their goals. There’s Riches in Niches. Aim to be the best, and don’t set your goal to be average. DO GREAT THINGS. Associating with positive podiatrists and avoiding time with negative ones. Building Relationships = Communication & Trust. Elan Silver was named Podiatrist of the Year 2023 at the Allied Health Awards. He owns Silver Podiatry in Inglewood, Western Australia, and his podiatry story will astound you.  He initially studied optometry but had to leave because of colour blindness and astigmatism, so he transferred and got a degree in Anatomy and Human Biology. After completing his first degree, he decided to study chiropractic. In his final year, he became disillusioned because he felt they did not address the lower limb, especially limb length discrepancies, and how this would affect long-term treatment outcomes for patients. Elan thought, surely you should start at the bottom and work your way up. He mentioned his concerns to a lecturer who said that's how you make your money.  This dissatisfaction led him to investigate the world of podiatry. He decided he would not work as a chiropractor and would go back to university and study podiatry. So, he packed up his life in Perth and started his podiatry degree at the Charles Sturt University in Albury, New South Wales. Upon graduating, he immediately moved back to Perth. After working for other people initially, he decided, as a mature graduate, that it was time to start working for himself. Since then, he has never looked back; the rest is history. If you would like to reach out to Elan Silver, his email address is elan@silverpodiatry.com.au and if you have any questions about this episode, you can contact me at tyson@podiatrylegends.com DO YOU THINK DIFFERENTLY FROM THE AVERAGE PODIATRIST?  If you do, I want to let you know you're not alone, and most of my coaching clients feel the same way, which is why they chose to work with me over a larger cookie-cutter coaching company. Jason Feifer is a journalist and editor in Chief at Entrepreneur Magazine, a magazine entrepreneurs read to gain insights into building their businesses and careers.  In this episode, we discuss: Turning mistakes into positives (Smedberg's Farm, Maine) Home of the LOBESTER. His interview with Mark Wahlberg - Mark Wahlberg's Secret To Becoming More Disciplined Why, sometimes, your effort isn't enough. You can work your ass off, and you will not get what you're looking for. But, you can learn to shift your attention to create a new version of what you wanted to satisfy the desire you had. It's Not Just About the Hustle  Banging your head against a wall will not turn that wall into a door. But if you shift that effort into something more constructive and realistic and fits better with your skill sets and the resources available, it can create something just as good.  Content creation  When you're producing content, you're not creating it for yourself; you are making it for an audience, so you better understand that audience, how to serve them, and how you can deliver it in a way that no one else can. Stop Doing What People Hate This is a quote from Jesse Cole, 'Stop doing what people hate'. Every business does things people hate, and they think it's ok because that's how things have always been done.  Think about it and make an effort to eliminate them. Why would you do it to your clients if it annoys you when dealing with other businesses?   Final Tip Treat your time like your most valuable resource. You don't spend money at total random, and you should not spend time at total random either.  Consider subscribing to Jason's weekly newsletter - One Thing Better. PART 2 does not disappoint and is once again full of more TRUTH BOMBS for employers looking to employ new graduates. If you missed out on employing a new graduate this year, you need to listen to what they have to say.  Your job ads are letting you down.  In this and last week's episodes, I interview eight recent graduates (four per episode), all of whom have gained employment for 2024, and they openly share their thoughts about the podiatry employment landscape.  Part 2 Podiatry Guests: Emmanuel Clironomos Mitchell Phillips Josh Taylor Evelyn Liu  Written Anonymous Submission  I asked six simple questions: Where did you look for podiatry job opportunities? Was there anything in an ad that immediately put you off? How many interviews did you have? If you rejected certain offers, why, and what made you say YES to the position you're starting in 2024? What aspects of podiatry do you like most? Was money a deciding factor? I concluded each interview by asking them to offer some advice to employers wanting to employ a new graduate in the future.  If you have any questions about this episode, you can contact me at tyson@podiatrylegends.com Do You Think Differently from the Average Podiatrist?   If you do, I want to let you know you're not alone, and most of my coaching clients feel the same way, which is why they chose to work with me over a larger cookie-cutter coaching company.  My coaching clients do not have big egos; they are quiet achievers and like to fly under the radar, but they do want to evolve their podiatry businesses into something special, something they can be proud of and say, "This is mine".  If this sounds like you, we should talk. Emily Donker is a podiatrist, professional triathlete, and owner of Running Fix in Brisbane. Her business is focused on the active patient requiring podiatry, gait analysis and running coaching.  In this episode, we discuss how Emily got involved in triathlons and the progression to move her from the amateur ranks to becoming a professional triathlete, not too much different in the progression from being a podiatry student to a qualified podiatry professional.  Emily has a unique story, and I think any podiatrist wanting to know how to blend their passion and podiatry career should not miss this episode. There is also invaluable information to help you understand how a professional athlete's mind ticks.  If you have any questions about this episode, you can contact me at tyson@podiatrylegends.com BUSINESS COACHING  Hi, I'm Tyson Franklin, and if you're looking for assistance to help grow and evolve your podiatry business, please talk with me before you commit to a larger coaching company that will more than likely, after their initial call, hand you off to an employee who may or may not know much about podiatry. Dr Peter Lovato, DPM, shares his journey from being an associate to becoming a partner at Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists and why he gets excited about pursuing perfection, not perfection itself, that keeps him on the path of continual learning and skill development. We also discuss finding employment, especially in the early years of your podiatry career, at a practice where you feel like you fit the culture because, in the long term, team culture is everything. This fascinating episode tracks Matthew Cichero's pursuit of surgical excellence in Australia and the UK. We follow the trials and triumphs of his medical journey from Brisbane to London through setbacks, breakthroughs and hard-won victories. Matthew's passion for podiatric surgery compelled him to seek training opportunities globally. After earning his degree in Australia, he honed his podiatric skills initially in Singapore before returning home to Australia to balance building a practice in Brisbane and start his master's degree.  After training as a Podiatric Surgeon in Australia, Matthew took a chance to relocate to the UK, which is where he still resides today. He is a Consultant Podiatric Surgeon at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon, UK. Tom Foster from Foster Web Marketing joins me on this podcast to discuss the thinking behind Storybrand Websites and why podiatrists should embrace this way of marketing their practices. It's about making the patient the hero, not the podiatrist.  Podiatrists often complain on social media about The Good Feet Store or other companies because of their orthotic marketing. However, if every podiatrist embraced marketing through their websites, there would be no issue; podiatry would dominate the market. Patients would consider podiatry before heading to other companies and professions for foot problems.  "Your website is your best marketing vehicle for making money, and if you do it right, it will bring you tons of new patients".  Tom shares some slides during this podcast, which you will find on my YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/0hiuqnh7LiM The process is quite simple: Attract patients with excellent website content and SEO.  Once they're on your website, convert them to an appointment or give them further information in exchange for their email address.  When you have their email address, you should market to them.  We also discuss: Using Google and YouTube searches for topics.  Refining your perfect patient and creating content for them, and only them. Make your content specific.  Making your patient the hero of the story.  Building a Storybrand.  Creating a "Foot Freedom Plan".  Write about what the patient wants, not what you do. Giving patients a simple plan to follow.  Your homepage is a brand page; therefore, it needs less text. Your internal pages, however, need more text and need to be optimised.  The power of stories: Use examples of patients with similar problems and how they overcame the problem and were able to do what they wanted to do, pain-free, by following the foot freedom plan you developed.  If you have any questions about this episode, you can contact Tom Foster at tom@fosterwebmarketing.com to you can email me at tyson@podiatrylegends.com BUSINESS COACHING  Hi, I'm Tyson Franklin, and if you're looking for a specialised podiatry business coach, please talk with me before you commit to a larger coaching company that will more than likely, after their initial sales call, hand you off to an employee who may or may not know much about podiatry.  I have a proven track record of helping podiatrists excel in business, but let's chat before you commit to anything else.
