It Doesn't Matter

It Doesn't Matter

2021-08-0219:58

Welcome to calmness in a frustrating world! Okay, how about the PROSPECT of such a thing. I'm the kind of person who has immediate emotional reactions that often get me in trouble. I very often look back and think, "If I had just taken a moment to think about that, things would have gone so much better." And, there is a special little phrase that helps me do that.Today, I will share some personal issues and recent episodes that have discouraged me. I promise this isn't a call to pity, though I am pretty pitiful. But I need you to see how perspective can change everything. Maybe even in your life as well.- Do you ever get frustrated at things that aren't really that big of a deal?- Why do we do that when God has done so much for us?- Are you interested in impulse control, better perspective, and deeper prayers?- Can a simple phrase, uttered over and over again, really make that big of a difference?- How can you tell the difference between things that matter and things that don't?
The MasterCard Symbol

The MasterCard Symbol

2021-07-2619:58

Why can't we just all agree on everything? Why don't people see things like you see them all the time? And does a healthy relationship demand such?  Well, on that last one, I sure hope not! The truth is, we see things differently than even our closest friends. How do we deal with that? I have to tell you, there are a lot of relationships that are defined by the differences. And those relationship are awful. Maybe its a marriage, or a blood brother. All they can think about is how they disagree and why that prevents them from growing.  We can do better. We must. The MasterCard symbol is here to help. You may not agree with all I have to say about that... but that's kind of the point! ;-) Let's celebrate what unites us and then work on the rest.- How do you deal with people in your life who disagree with you on things?- Is every disagreement worth fighting over?  How do you tell the difference?- What is usually true of every friendship that needs more focus and appreciation?- Do brethren sometimes let their differences lead to division? Why?- Is there hope in your home and church and life found in a small orange area?
The Hope Experiment

The Hope Experiment

2021-07-1919:59

I am apologizing in advance. The experiment behind today's episode is pretty morbid. I in no way hope that you find yourself swimming for your life in a oversized test tube. I also feel like the feedback that is coming will ensure no more episodes feature rats, dead or alive. However... for today... I have an old scientific experiment to share with you. If a rat can change it's potential by 240X from just a moment's infusion of hope, how much more so you and me? Consider the power of hope in your life, and what it means to believe in God's hand, your own strength, and the support of the people you love!- Why did a group of scientist drown a bunch of rats?- Okay that may not be defensible, but what was learned from that experiment?- What has God done in your life to give you hope for tomorrow?- What have you done for yourself in the past to build hope in your own strength?- Who loves you so much that they have come to your rescue and will do it again soon?
Love and Light

Love and Light

2021-07-1219:581

This episode feels important. Sure, I want to talk to you about your influence. I want to talk to you about the love in you and who gets that love and how longsuffering your are with it. And yes, I want to ask about your light. I want to tell you that you reflect Christ and the world needs to see you illuminated in His name. All of that is important. But it is also impossible. Yes, you heard that right, it cannot be done. Unless... Unless the love of God is real in your life. Unless the light of God warms your soul.  Too many Christians, in my experience, are living with less than great love and with dimmed lights, because that reflects what they see in God. And there is so, so much more! - How would you describe God's love for you?- How would you describe the light of God in your life?- Is it possible to love others well if we do not know God's love well?- Is it possible to shine brightly if the light of God is not bright in our own lives?- And how wonderful will our love and light be if we sob beneath the realization of God's?
Looking For Adventure

Looking For Adventure

2021-07-0519:59

I'm in search of someone who is looking for adventure. Who is ready to step out there and do something that most people will not do. You need to know, it won't be easy. And there are risks that it might not go as planned. And you have no way to predict what will happen next! But the alternative... being stuck in the system, in the mundane, in a machine that isn't really you and doesn't represent who you want to be... well, I'm done with that. Maybe you are as well. If so, hop in for a big decision. Jordan Peterson wrote a new book giving us 12 more rules for life. In promoting that book, he spoke of the most adventurous thing you can do. - Why aren't more people willing to take a risk to get a genuine reward?- Before the big jump, what is the most satisfying thing you can do day by day?- Are you sharing your true feeling with others? Or is that just too scary?- What is the proper process to becoming truly transparent with others?- What are some tremendous things that might happen when you take today's adventure?
"Don't Blame Anybody"

"Don't Blame Anybody"

2021-06-2819:58

Jon Rahm had his heart broken. He was winning a major tournament, just one day away from 1.7 million dollars. And then, it all went away, all of the sudden. What happened to him was terrible, unfair, and infuriating. But how would he respond? Would he blame everyone? Would he use it as an excuse to behave poorly? Nope. This dude is solid. And the attitude he put on display is an example to us all. Oh, and good attitudes lead to good outcomes! - Have you recently had something unfair happen to you in your life?- How did that make you feel and what did you want to do about it?- Is it important to keep your cool, put it in perspective and move forward?- How many people are influenced by how you handle tough breaks?- Is it possible a bad break today can lead to your big break tomorrow?
Jar of Rocks

Jar of Rocks

2021-06-2119:58

Life is busy. Everyone says this and we all mean it! So how do we keep the stress down and make sure everything important gets done? And done well?Maybe we need to evaluate how we order elements of our lives. Maybe if we keep putting small things first, we aren't giving big things the space they need to be successful. Let's walk through a visual illustration that can help us order things well and have far less stress. - What happens when little things take priority over bigger things in our schedule?- How can starting with the essential relieve stress and make our weeks more smooth?- What about if there is just to much? How do you cut things out aren't essential?- And what if big things in life get HUGE? Like an illness or crisis? Are we ready for that?- Are you interested in a well ordered, effortless week, where everything just fits?  Me too!
Has anyone ever told you that evangelism is important? I would imagine you've heard it 100 times. We preachers talk about how God has called us to spread the Word in all circumstances. We talk about whole churches being active in teaching Jesus to others. And yet, many churches, and many individuals, just haven't gotten the hang of it.Not that it is absent altogether. We each and all have our shining moments, and maybe can even name someone who is a Christian because God brought them into our lives. But what if that was not an exception? What if soul winning became your identity? What if the church where you worshipped was known all over the State for its evangelistic culture?- What is evangelism and why aren't most of us better at it?- What is a "church culture" and how important is knowing yours?- What happens if we want to do a thing but haven't prepared to do that thing?- How can whole churches position themselves to be better soul seekers?- Have you checked out the totally free Gospel Message booklet?  Head to www.lindalechurchofchrist.com and click on "The Gospel Message" box.
The word "fellowship" has always been a challenge for me. I was raised for a while to believe it meant one thing. And then, later, it seemed I was being told something opposite. Today, from the Scriptures, I see something beautiful. Fellowship is an invisible thing, a spiritual and eternal thing, that shows itself, proves itself, in real time with people of faith. I want to explore the incredible facets of koinonia, from the spiritual to the physical. We need this. After that pandemic, we need this. But also, because of the ideas that some have, ideas the lead us away from worship to our own spiritual experiences. I preached a sermon on this at the Lindale church, but here we cut straight to chase on Christian fellowship. - What does the word "fellowship" mean to you?- Is fellowship spiritual, physical, or both?- How does your church, and the Christians in your life, demonstrate fellowship?- Why do our young people need to understand the mutual, shared aspect of faith?- How will New Testament fellowship lead to explosive growth in the church today?
Fixing Your Windshield

Fixing Your Windshield

2021-05-3119:58

Last year we got a crack in the windshield of our 2018 Honda Odyssey. We had months to fix it, but didn't. This Spring, that little crack became a massive one that ran all the way across the driver's sight line!  At that point, we had no choice. But we also had not options. It had to be replaced and the cost was HUGE. I sure wish we would have addressed that earlier, for FREE!Lots of cracks, chips, little problems pop up in our lives. If they are on the passenger's side, we tend to forget about them. But they usually don't go away on their own. They grow under severe climate changes! And most of the time we wish we would have taken care of them much earlier, before they became such a big and costly deal.  Let's talk about that!- Why are windshields free to repair and $1400 to replace?- Why do we wait to fix them when the above answer is so clear and known?- How do we sometimes make this same mistake in our personal lives?- What is the power of Early + Often = Less- How can we apply all of this to Faith, Friendship, Fitness and Finances?
Have A Heart

Have A Heart

2021-05-2419:58

I want to introduce you to the most marvelous, life changing book!  I cannot recommend it enough. It is called the "Gospel of Luke."  Maybe you have read it before. But have you read it lately. And more importantly, have you read it in search of the heart of Christ? His compassion and love for people, and His charge for disciples to help and teach and give... unbelievable.I'm afraid many churches haven't focused enough on the love of people found in the Gospels. Focusing on the church and the epistles and the patter of worship and collective work is all important - but only if it is built on the feelings Christ had for God and for people. - What did Christ feel for the lost?- What did it mean to the Father for someone to be restored to Him?- What did Christ want done for the poor and hurting?- Has He positioned us to be His hands of service to the needy?- Can we think less of ourselves and more about the joy God feels when people are helped?
Creation to Revelation

Creation to Revelation

2021-05-1719:59

God has blessed most of us with children to influence and train. Maybe it is your sons and daughters, maybe you've gone on to the parenting heaven of grandkids. Maybe you influence other young family members, kids at church, or in your neighborhood. Do we understand that God is looking to us to share the message of Jesus with them? Like Abraham before us, God chooses us because He seeks growth even beyond our own lives. He is looking for people who will instill faith into the next generation, and teach the Word of God, and the Word that is Christ. In this episode we will look at the importance of doing this. We will also see that you can start practically anywhere from Genesis to Revelation. And we are introducing a new sponsor to the program who has tools and packages to help. www.creationtorevelation.com- What does God expect from us when He blesses us with children?- What can we do to help the next generation know Jesus better?- Do we understand that all of Scripture, beginning to end, is the Christ story?- How can "Creation to Revelation" help us share that story with those we love?- What will you do today to pass along the precious faith that saved your life?
Prayer and Fasting

Prayer and Fasting

2021-05-1019:59

The disciples could not cast out the demon. Why not? Because their faith was too small. And Jesus told them how to get that faith right where it needed to be:  PRAYER and FASTING!  Do you use these tools from Christ to grow your faith?  For some of us, prayer is just a thing we do. And fasting... well... we don't do that, except to lose weight. But Christ has a two part plan to give you access to God's power.  Let's look at two acronyms today P.R.A.Y. and F.A.S.T. to get this week going right to God's thrown and get the needed power in our lives to cast out the demons in our lives.- Why could the disciples not cast out the demon?- Will you be any more successful with the demons in your life?- What is the purpose of prayer and how do we make it work for us?- What is the purpose of fasting and what does that look like in your life?- How does Bible reading come into play to help it all work to new heights of faith?
Myth and Passage

Myth and Passage

2021-05-0319:581

Today we wrap up our short series on marriage. We started by looking in the mirror. Then we built a triangle and laid out a plan to grow towards God. Then we strategized a plan to make sure we are always fighting on the same side and never against one another.  And we discussed the beautiful SECRET (my favorite) to get all of this back in place.Today we look at two final ideas: the myth and the passage. One of them is something we want to debunk and avoid (it is truly awful). And the other is something we need to believe in and live for (best marriage passage ever). Let's set up a short series of qualities you an grab this week and implement into every relationship you value in your life!- What myth has been taught about marriage and needs to be debunked?- How much closer can you grow together if your strategy is spending time apart?- What is the value of harmonizing and being sympathetic in marriage?- Should I treat my spouse like a Christian, even if they are not?- What is "the power of the first response" and why do I need to understand it?
Strategy and Secret

Strategy and Secret

2021-04-2619:561

Welcome back to our three part series on marriage. We started a couple of weeks back with a lot of self evaluation.  It starts with looking in the mirror and asking, "is it me?" Then, we talked  about the life triangle, and how you must head closer to God. If both of you can do that, you will always find each other there, in the presence of God. Today, we start looking at teamwork. It is time to turn the pronouns towards "us" and "we." It begins by building a strategy, a game plan, a war approach, that IS NOT against one another! No matter what, and no matter who, it must always be the two of you against the world. And then, let's discuss the SECRET. I love it so much and I hope that comes across in the episode. I won't reveal it here, but you used to know it well, but far too many have forgotten its power and how amazing it feels! Of the entire list, this is the funnest and bestest tip of them all!- When the battles rages, where are you and where is your spouse?- If you fight against someone with whom you are one, how will that work out?- Do you remember how you and your mate fell in love?- Can you recall the way you spent time together and why it mattered so much to you?- ASSIGNMENT:  will you take the challenge from the last two minutes of this episode?
Putting Down Roots

Putting Down Roots

2021-04-1919:581

Sommer and I had an amazing two nights in Florida last week!  We saw beaches on both coasts. But the highlight was speaking at the Florida College Spring Banquet. I had the honor of addressing 300+ college students. I spoke to them about envisioning a better version of themself. In today's episode I'll walk you through those suggestions and ask you to do the same.  "If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?" Stuff like that! But knowing what you want to be become is not enough. Wanting to becoming a certain type of fruitful tree will not make it so. We must develop roots. The things happening under the ground must happen first, and then visible growth can flourish.Let's talk about how that works and let me challenge you to do some things behind closed doors that aligns with your goals.- What happened to our series on Marriage?- Why is envisioning growth important to results?- What is the value of seeing growth without a good root system?- Why do we do the work in private before seeing public results?- Bonus Q - What quality is to be in the root system and the first fruits produced?
Mirror and Triangle

Mirror and Triangle

2021-04-1219:591

Marriage is awesome! At least, that's what God designed it to be. And for nearly all of us, when we first got married, we had awesome expectations. Whatever the state of your home, you can see things get even better by looking at SIX SIMPLE IDEAS.Maybe you aren't yet married, or maybe you are no longer married. I assure you, these ideas are also for you. Maybe they can prepare to you get way ahead of the game. Or maybe you can share these with loved ones who need more hope in their home. This week we will look at the MIRROR and the TRIANGLE. Next week we turn to the Strategy and the Secret.  And, Lord willing, things will wrap up with the Myth and the Passage.- Is a better marriage possible for every couple?- Can we boil down all marriage teaching into six simple things?- Why do I need to start with the mirror?- What is my part of the triangle and how can I change the shape of things?- Will you pray this week that God will help you think on and grow in these area?
Questions For Achievers

Questions For Achievers

2021-04-0519:581

Today we conclude a short series on 3 Questions for ... Everyone, Leaders, and now Achievers. This is derived from a podcast called Chasing Excellence by Ben Bergeron.  Though he didn't mention God and we have modified the topics and questions to address our spiritual walk.We started with "Believe to Achieve" which addressed questions about what you believe, why you believe it, and whether or not others are seeing it in your life.  We then addressed leaders, which most of us are in some capacity or another.  Are we communicating our vision to our people, and does the world see it in us (think - CHRIST! :-) Today, we address people who are engaged. This episode is not for someone who wants to get off the couch. This is for someone who has laced up the shoes and hit the streets. Now what? How do you be sure to keep it going?- Once I have decided to be active with a passion, what next?- How can I be sure to keep it going, especially when the new wears off?- How is my time management?- How do I self-coach through setbacks?- Am I giving this maximum effort while I am actually doing it?
Questions For Leaders

Questions For Leaders

2021-03-2919:591

Last week we looked at three questions all people must regularly consider. Did you spend some time on that?  Have you found your core belief?  If you missed that episode, we will have a short recap here.  Today, we push forward to leadership. Many of us are leaders:  of families, at work, over churches, or just in general among our friends. Leaders have a big responsibility. They not only pick a direction. They bring others along with them!  - What are three questions each and every leader should consider often?- How important is a clear vision of what matters to you and those you lead?- Do I understand that others can only achieve what I convince them to believe?- How well do you communicate that passion to the people you have under your charge?- What do others experience when they come in contact with you group, your team, your culture?
Believe to Achieve

Believe to Achieve

2021-03-2219:561

I was on a long drive back to Texas from Missouri this past week. A friend suggested a podcast called Chasing Excellence. It is secular in nature, but taps into the power to do greater things. But that power has to be in me. I must believe in something. Not because others do, nor because they tell me I should. That thing must be real to me. Once it is, and I can explain to myself and others why it is, I can draw from the power of that conviction to live an extraordinary life. But not in all things. Only in things in which I truly believe!- Why must we believe in order to achieve?- What happens when I pursue things I don't really believe in?- What do I believe?- Why do I believe it?- If I told that to someone else, would they believe me?

I love how you are applying books that I have already read into a Christian perspective so I can apply what I've learned there too. Growth in all areas makes me become the person God made me to be. Thank you!
