Welcome to our Televisionation podcast show, which showcases executives, innovators, creatives, and invited analysts, in dialog with ITVT founder and editor-in-chief, Tracy Swedlow. These podcasts also offer audio of sessions from our TV of Tomorrow Show (TVOT) conferences (produced twice a year in San Francisco and New York); video interviews, as well as other types of updates and content.

This episode features George Ivie, CEO and Executive Director of the Media Rating Council (MRC), an organization which was founded at the behest of the US Congress in the early 1960’s and which describes its mission as being to “secure for the media industry and related users measurement services that are valid, reliable, and effective.” Among other things, the organization sets measurement standards and accredits measurement services. Ivie casts light on the MRC’s work, shares his thoughts on the current state of the measurement space in general, and outlines the organization’s goals for 2021.

With a Billion (with a "B") streams in 2020, the service is on a roll. Christy explains the service’s content structure, revenue model and technical growth to handle the massive increase in audience over the past four years, with a substantial acceleration in 2020. In the opinion of the good doctor, CBS News Digital is poised for substantial additional growth with the launch of Paramount +. Allyson discusses her time at Nielsen and her time running the analytics business at Neustar, to help clients measure the impact of their marketing spend. She also helps the good doctor understand the concept of “Digital Arbitration,” and explains the partnership with iSpot TV which allows Neustar to feed linear TV data into their analytics tool—essentially to “stitch together” touch points with the consumer: e.g. seeing an ad on Facebook, then an ad on Connected TV and finally on Linear TV. That allows Neustar and their clients to see a “holistic view” of the consumer journey.

Andrea takes us through a fascinating look at the early days of Tubi (she’s been at Tubi for about as long as Tubi has been Tubi), including the work they did to help content owners prepare their content for streaming distribution (this was WAAAAY back in 2015; just shows how quickly this industry is moving). Andrea also leads Tubi’s app distribution deals, including their deal with Comcast Xfinity, where Tubi was the third streaming app available on the cable service after Netflix and YouTube. We also discuss the acquisition of Tubi by Fox (which in the opinion of the good doctor puts Tubi in the same position with Fox as PlutoTV is with ViacomCBS).

This episode features Dan Garraway, Co-Founder of Wirewax, a UK company which last month announced the launch of an interactive-TV and television-commerce (tcommerce) app—called INTERACTIVE, Powered by WIREWAX—for Chromecast with Google TV and other Android TV OS devices. The app, which can be downloaded from Google Play, allows viewers to use their existing remotes to pause video and immediately access detailed information on the program they are watching, add creative “stickers” to the paused image and turn it into a shareable meme (this feature employs AI algorithms for face detection and motion tracking), and shop products via direct links to retailers and universal shopping carts. Among other things, Garraway describes the process that led to the launch of the new app; discusses Wirewax’s plans going forward; and explains why he believes interactivity will play an crucial role in the future of streaming.

She shares with us the results of several studies that the organization has conducted over the past few months in order to better understand media usage and the impact of media on decision making. These studies include two (one in April and one in September) on media usage during the Covid-19 pandemic; a Home Improvement Purchase Funnel Study, which examined the importance of media platforms in influencing home-improvement consumers in their purchase-decision process; and a Voter Funnel Study which, immediately after the general election, canvased 10,000+ registered voters in 10 competitive states in order to identify the importance of over 20 media platforms in influencing the voter decision process.
