Description

The More Than Fitness Podcast is about bridging the gap between being in the best shape of your life and still having a life – interviewing some of the smartest minds in fitness, business, and self-development to discuss how to maximize our time in and out of the gym. At its very essence, it's simply described as the backbone of what connects us all: a conversation.

When I competed in my first drug-free bodybuilding competition in 2012, I did OK. I got 4th place and it left me coming back for more, hoping to improve myself and compete again in a few years. But since I wanted to make the best progress possible, I knew I couldn't do it alone. I didn't have 1) the specific knowledge around diet and exercise and 2) the accountability to go the extra mile, even when I didn't want to. This combination was holding me back from being my best, so I decided to reach out for help. When I hired someone to help me, there was one very specific thing that changed that "unlocked" the progress I was looking for. In this Minisode, I explain what that is and why it's so important for you if you have any goals in 2021. Austin is back once again for another thought-provoking chat. Austin is an online fitness coach with Physique Development, an educator, and a great friend. He's a repeat guest on this show for a reason, and it's not just because of his great beard. We were going to have a chat without the mics, but I couldn't think of someone better for my 99th guest, so I was stoked he agreed to come on. In this conversation, we cover: -Why doing a podcast has held us both accountable to practice what we preach -Dr. Jordan Peterson's newest book -Taking steps to become the person you *could* be -The importance of writing down your goals and values instead of just thinking them -Checking in with yourself about how hard you're actually working -Using low expectations as a crutch to not excel -The balance of learning vs doing -Using your negative emotions as signals for what's missing -Having a duty to give back to others -Reflecting on the past year's strengths and weaknesses -Meditation and journaling practices -Austin's new book on The Science Of Strength Training -The origin story of his new book -Goals for 2021 -And much more Enjoy! Not gonna lie, I was fired up in this one. As a Registered Dietitian and someone who's worked with many people on this type of stuff, I have a passion for dispelling fact from fallacy. And with the rise of social media influencers preaching the importance of body positivity, there's plenty of fallacies out there. In this Minisode, I wanted to share my own experience with gaining more confidence, the missing piece of the body positivity movement, why this isn't about equating size or appearance with health, the importance of identifying your shortcomings, and how to build true self-love and confidence. I'd love to get this message out there, so consider sharing this with a friend who may enjoy this. Hope it helps! Mike is the Founder of Stronger U, a personalized nutrition coaching company that's trying to change the way the world eats. I first heard of Stronger U from friends who worked for the company and spoke highly of Mike. So, I checked him out and I could tell we would get along by the types of content he was putting out. After this chat, I can definitely confirm — it went great and Mike sprinkled in plenty of wisdom along the way. In this conversation, we cover: -How he and his company responded to the hardship of COVID-19 -What he thinks about "hustling" vs "surviving" during 2020 -How he overcomes comparing himself to others and how that's evolved over time -Why his company continues to succeed by focusing on people over profit -His wild backstory of getting trapped into multiple banking and HR jobs before founding Stronger U -How wanting something so bad and trying to "force" things can be counterproductive -How he makes decisions for his 70-person company -His process behind thinking vs doing -Advice on turning your brain off when your workday is over -His best tools for learning and who he likes to learn from -Borrowing ideas from people smarter than you in different fields -Not worrying about other people's opinions -Filtering out good advice vs bad advice -Mike's "Big Rocks" for fitness -Fat loss behavior change advice -Goal setting in 2021 -And much more! If you've got a weight loss goal for 2021, this is the Minisode that'll give you some structure and accountability along the way. I got the idea for this Minisode because my mom wanted me to help her out with diet, so I wanted to think of the simplest and most effective advice to give her. This Minisode is what I came up with as her solution. It's easy to follow, habit-based, and allows you to measure progress over time. Hope it helps! We did it! 100 Minisodes completed in 2020. This was recorded on Dec 30th and I wanted to finish the year strong by doing a quick recap of the last 100 Minisodes, along with my plans for 2021. Surprisingly, I open up a bit in this one. I get vulnerable and explain how I've been feeling anxious and dealing with some negative emotions recently. But then I follow that up with my plan for dealing with these emotions as I head into the new year, and I think you'll be able to relate in more ways than one. 2021 is here, and it's time to get to work. Cheers to a new year and cheers to 100 more Minisodes! Appreciate you all for listening. A retrospective is when you look back on the past year to identify what worked...and what didn’t work. A retrospective helps you celebrate your wins and identify your weaknesses. It helps you learn from the past and correct for the future. In this solo episode, I answer three questions: QUESTION 1: What’s working? ("What did I do right? What am I proud of?") QUESTION 2: What’s not working? ("What could be improved? What are my biggest opportunities for growth?") QUESTION 3: How can I fix what’s not working for a better result? ("What specific things can I focus on next time?") Hopefully this episode inspires you to take the time to think, reflect, and write your own retrospective. It should take you roughly an hour, but you owe it to yourself to take this seriously. Hope you enjoy! I thought of this Minisode topic after realizing there were several things I do regularly to help get me closer to my fitness goals, but I don't emphasize them often. I also don't hear other coaches mention them often, so I wanted to highlight four of them in this Minisode. I think that if you add in these fitness tips with your regular regimen, there's no doubt it will level things up just a touch more. Hope you enjoy! When I'm designing workout plans for my clients, there's typically not much difference between making a plan for fat loss or for muscle gain. It simply doesn't make much sense to use your workouts for fat loss since it isn't as efficient as paying closer attention to your diet. That said, it doesn't mean we can't EVER design a workout to bias fat loss over strength/performance/muscle gain. So in this Minisode, I cover exactly what differences I would make and how you can implement these in your own workouts. I get super specific, starting with the warm-up and ending with finishers, so you'll definitely walk away from this one with info you can use. Hope it helps! The DrunkCast Q&A is a tradition on the More Than Fitness Podcast where I answer my audiences' questions — while intoxicated. It's the show that just keeps getting better and better as time goes on. I cover diet, exercise, habits, life, and, sometimes, completely ridiculous submissions by my listeners. It's always a treat, so pour up a drink and get ready for a silly goose time (and hopefully you'll learn something). QUESTION TIMESTAMPS: (2:14) What has been your most surprising weight loss week? I remember one week I lost pounds after having a big Sunday meal with the family, six pints, and a fried chicken burger (large portion) and chips and was so shocked I had lost so much weight after 'treating myself.' (9:15) How do you feel about coaches that start to extend themselves into other modalities of “coaching” that go beyond fitness/nutrition (the mindset around it, etc.) coaching? I’ve noticed that once a personal trainer starts seeing some level of success in coaching their clients they start to post more and more about things like mental health, endocrine health, etc. In my experience, I’ve seen a troubling amount of wholly unqualified coaches start answering questions around these things. I’ve noticed you’re quick to refer to experts in the field that someone asks a question in (which is commendable and good) but the amount of poor/unqualified answers and advice I’ve seen given by fitness coaches seems to be an ever-growing issue. Curious as to your thoughts on this! (14:25) Thoughts on incorporating Bosu trainers in workouts? (20:00) Did you go from 9-5 life to entrepreneur or have you always been an entrepreneur? (28:04) How long should one ideally bulk before cutting? (34:21) Biggest takeaway since moving to NYC? (39:31) Thoughts on women taking CLA and creatine for toning? Or are they just for bodybuilding? (47:23) After being sick with COVID or the flu, how long should you rest before working again? Everybody wants to be stronger, faster, more powerful, and flat out look like an athlete. But I think people are going about it completely wrong. Most of them just find cool, "functional"-looking exercises on social media and throw it in their programs wherever. And that can help a bit, better than not doing them at all, but structuring your workouts incorrectly can neglect other areas you're also trying to improve. It can actually be detrimental if you add in dangerous faux-functional exercises like Bosu ball squats or way-too-high box jumps. In this Minisode, I cover everything you need to know to bring out your inner athlete the RIGHT way with five of my best tips. Hope you enjoy. Kaylin is back for her third appearance on the podcast, but the second time we've had a solo episode together. So if you want to hear more of her back story, which is amazing, I highly recommend you go back and listen to that episode (#17). But for this one, we touched on a lot of topics, such as: how she handled COVID when it first hit, how she grew her team from two to seven employees in 5 months, the inner workings of what's involved with her epic coaching program "The Higher Standard," how she handles adversity and ways to overcome it, what she recommends to do to surround yourself with the right people (even if they don't live in your area), how to handle criticism when chasing after your goals, how she has handled hiring people and what that process has been like, how to gain trust in yourself and build confidence, how her recent move has been to Austin, Texas, and much, much more. Tons of value packed in this one and it was great to catch up with her, so you won't want to miss it. Enjoy! It's easy to follow your plan when life is going according to schedule, but what happens when the inevitable obstacle is thrown onto your plate? Today's Minisode idea came to me when I had a client say she does great when she's able to meal prep, but if she can't, then her diet goes to shit. She's trying to subjectively make "healthy" choices, but this rarely works for long. So I wanted to give her the mental frameworks for making these decisions on the fly, and be able to adapt no matter what happens. This Minisode dives deep into exactly what I told her and what I've used myself to find success even when life gets busy. Hope it helps! Believe it or not, there's a lot of people who actually struggle to GAIN weight, instead of lose it. I've coached many "hardgainers" over the years and I used to think I was one myself, so I can empathize with you all going through this. And better yet, you can be safe and healthy throughout the entire process. Mason is a personal trainer turned into a food blogger, and his company is cleverly called Kinda Healthy Recipes. This is Mason's third time on the podcast, so we jump straight into casual conversation. It starts out with our recent caffeine experiments and how it's positively or negatively affected our well-being, emotions, and mood. After that, we touch on his recent wedding and the effects of COVID on that entire experience. Then, we talk about how he enjoys living in Austin, TX and I let him know my recent experience moving to NYC. Since he isn't from Austin and I'm not from NYC, we talk about how to make friends in a new city and how important it is for a happy life. Lastly, we talk about how he and his wife Vanessa, who's the CCO of the company, plans on pivoting their food blogger business into discussing more strategy for blogging in general. As usual, Mason is super easy going and a pleasure to chat with, so I'm sure this won't be the last one. Make sure to give this one a listen and check him out after. Enjoy!
