Description

The More Than Fitness Podcast is about bridging the gap between being in the best shape of your life and still having a life – interviewing some of the smartest minds in fitness, business, and self-development to discuss how to maximize our time in and out of the gym. At its very essence, it's simply described as the backbone of what connects us all: a conversation.

It can be helpful to follow a plan made by someone else if they know what they're doing. But how do YOU know they know what they're doing? What if there's a better way, but you can't identify it? Well, in this Minisode, I break down which type of exercises are best for muscle and how to sequence them in your workout. I cover the principle of specificity, so you can align your workout with your specific goals. I cover exercise order, so you can know how to efficiently and effectively structure your exercises. I cover how to bring up your weak or "lagging" body parts. And I also cover the difference between "pre-exhaust" and "activation sets" and why pre-exhaust could be hurting your gains, not helping. Plus, more. Hope you enjoy! Austin is back on the podcast this week and, as usual, we covered a lot of thoughtful talking points—the incentives of being a good person, what it means to be "mindless" and focus only on experience, why some people are happy with almost nothing and some are miserable with everything, understanding the "curse" of evolutionary wiring and it's effects on our happiness, using your "toolbox" of emotions to your advantage, police brutality and protests around the US, how to be a better listener, finding your why, home improvement skills, and much more. Basically, we figured out life and you're going to love this episode. This is Part 2 of our chat. If you'd like to go back and listen to Part 1, you can do so by clicking here. Enjoy! In Minisode #48, I explained to you guys how to lose fat. In this Minisode, I'm going to cover how to gain muscle. In both of these, I don't give any long explanations or justifications for what I'm telling you. I'm compressing all of my experience and knowledge—as a Registered Dietitian, a personal trainer, and someone who has personally coached hundreds of people to get in better shape—into actionable advice without the fluff. When someone says "Just tell me what to do," this Minisode is my answer. "Just tell me what to do." That's what most people ask of me when looking for solutions to their fitness problems. They don't want to know the science or some long explanation about what I believe, they simply want to know the action steps to take to reach their goals. So, in this Minisode, that's exactly what I provide. I've written an article on this (linked below), but I wanted to make a podcast version of it as it's always a good reminder of the bare-bones advice on how to lose body fat, without the fluff. With so much information on nutrition at your fingertips, it's no mystery as to why people are still confused. I think the more common sense you use and the smaller goals you set (and eventually overcome), the better off you'll be. I wanted to provide a bit of clarity for those of you out there who know what they should be doing, they just aren't doing it because of a lack of plan, experience, etc. I got you covered, and it all comes down to one simple question I answer in this Minisode. Check it out and I hope it helps! Under ideal circumstances, we would love to follow a periodized workout plan that was intelligently and methodically put together to maximize our gainz. The problem, however, is that "real life" gets in the way of "ideal circumstances" more often than not. This results in more workouts skipped and decreased motivation to get in the gym again—if we can't be perfect, why bother? I've had this thought process too many times, but it's short-sighted and leads to even more frustration. Instead, we should aim for "good enough" workouts when life isn't under "ideal circumstances." In this Minisode, I cover exactly what that looks like and why it's best to maximize gainz when life gets busy. Hope you enjoy! I met Mike awhile back at a workshop in New York City put on by our mutual friend, John Romaniello. We hit it off after a couple of drinks at the bar, followed each other on social media (as people do), and we've stayed in touch since. Just recently, Mike reached out again to promote his new book on productivity: Home Early: Destroy Distraction, Become Powerfully Productive, and Finish Work Before Dinner. In this episode, we cover tons of tactical strategies you can implement right away to manage your time better so you can have less stress, produce better work, and be more consistent in the gym (without feeling guilty). Nothing is better than laying your head on the pillow at the end of the day and being completely satisfied with how the day went — that's what our conversation entailed. Hope you enjoy and make sure to check out the first chapter of Mike's new book below, completely free. If you're an adult who regularly eats cereal for dinner, this Minisode is for you. I'm not recommending a full-course dinner for every meal, but, as adults, we've gotta make our nutrition a high priority, even as life gets busy. In this Minisode, I talk about accepting tradeoffs between life and fitness goals as you get older, dealing with emotions sabotaging progress, and one skill every adult should know. Hope you enjoy! As the country begins to open up again, more and more people will be going on vacation and trying to stay on track with their fitness goals. Or, at least, trying to minimize the damage (hence the title, "be less fat"). In this Minisode, I wanted to go over my best tips and advice that I've used myself, but also given to the hundreds of online fitness clients that I've worked with over the years. I go over what to do before the vacation, dieting and exercising during the vacation (or lack thereof), and how to manage expectations upon returning. Give it a listen and I hope it helps! I've been wanting to talk with Abel in-person in New York City (where he is a personal trainer at Structure Personal Fitness) for quite some time, but Coronavirus has prevented that from happening. So I'm pumped this finally happened, and even more so considering the protests against police brutality are currently spreading throughout the US. Abel is black and from the Bronx, NYC, while I am white and from a small town in Kentucky—needless to say, we have different upbringings and life experiences, which we share in-depth in this episode. We also share plenty of laughs and we even get emotional in a few parts (might've been the alcohol talking). It was a raw, entertaining, and thought-provoking chat between two humans that I'm so thankful for happening. I wanted to give Abel a platform to speak his mind, and he did not disappoint. Hope you enjoy, and maybe even learn a thing or two. There's two different camps in fitness right now: 1) those who are more "evidence-based" and think that supplements are basically useless, and 2) those who think supplements are the holy grail to their gainz and health. Both are wrong and, as with most nutrition advice, the answer lies somewhere in the middle. Some supplements *are* effective and in this Minisode, I go over my top 8 that you should consider trying if you don't already. *Disclaimer: listen to your doctor before taking and I also don't receive any monetary benefits from promoting these supplements. I would venture to say the majority of people walking into the gym don't have a plan. They may have a workout for the day, but not a plan that facilitates progress over the long-term. In this Minisode, I talk about why there's a difference between just sweating a lot and "feeling" like you got a good workout in, vs actually making real progress. Ideally, we could do all of the above, but sweat and feelings don't dictate legit progression. I also talk about safer and more effective ways to measure your progress over time, besides just adding weight to the bar and using crappy form. I think you'll get a lot out of this one and I hope you enjoy! Had an AMAZING conversation with the Italian Stallion, Rico Incarnati. Rico is a videographer and photographer who currently works with Jordan Syatt in New York City. He's not the typical "fitness guest" I have on the show, but his perspective and his story emulate exactly what I'm interested in teaching my audience. We dive into Rico's background, why he changed career paths in college, how he got the opportunity to move to NYC, what goes into his creative process, who he finds inspiration from and how he uses that to his advantage, how he takes care of his mental health, and, to quote his tagline, how to "be a f*cking shark." Oh, and lastly, I couldn't end the conversation without asking him where to visit in Italy and what his favorite authentic Italian spots are in NYC. You guys are definitely in for a treat—enjoy! Anybody can "lose weight." All you have to do is eat less food. But to make sure that weight loss comes mostly from fat tissue and not muscle tissue, you're going to have to be more strategic. Josh is a fellow Silly Goose from London that I met on Instagram a few weeks ago when he shared my work. He followed a lot of the same people I followed, believed in similar ideas, and he's *almost* as good looking as I am, so I decided to connect with him. Despite his aesthetic shortcomings, we had a great conversation about how our perspective on fitness has evolved as we've gotten older. Starting out as a boxer for about 10 years, Josh fell in love with weights and eventually became a PT at a local gym. That evolved into competing in physique competitions and getting ridiculously shredded on stage. As for schooling, he also never went to university because he didn't exactly excel in academics in his younger years, as he mentioned he would constantly "bunk" class (British slang for "skipping") or get in fights. That is, until recently, when his thirst for knowledge, fear of imposter syndrome, and yearning to become a better fitness coach drove him to pursue a degree in biochemistry. His priorities have changed over the years, but—like you and me—fitness remains the bedrock of it all, so it was cool to hear how he's managed things along the way. It could've been the alcohol talking, but we had a great chat and hit it off like a couple of lads. We hope you enjoy it, too. The hard truth is that, physically, alcohol is not good for us. But that doesn't mean we can't indulge every once in a while and practice drinking in moderation. Whether it's at a bar, wine with dinner, or during a celebration—we don't want to be "that guy" who says they can't drink because of their diet. Luckily, I have a plan for us to be able to get drunk, but not fat.  In this Minisode, I cover: -How many calories alcohol contains and how to balance our calories to limit fat gain -Why alcohol isn't inherently fattening, but the food AFTER we drink *is* -The effects alcohol has on our hunger and satiety (and what to do about it) -My post-drinking plan to stay on track with your fitness goals, but still enjoy a night out -What "moderation" even means and how to implement it -and much more! Despite the click-baity title, this Minisode is my absolute best evidence-based advice for building muscle as quickly as possible. The catch is that you're going to have to give up any alcohol and track every single thing you put in your mouth (among other things). There are obviously trade-offs if you want to build muscle as fast as possible, but if you accept them and commit — there's no reason you can't implement these tactics and see serious progress. Honored to have on my man, Austin, for his first ever podcast conversation. But don't worry, he didn't disappoint and came with one hell of a story. I met Austin a little while back through mutual friends, and it was right before he got all big-time on me and moved out to LA to become a founding trainer at the new DOGPOUND gym. See, Austin is originally from Minnesota and played college basketball with hopes of working as a personal trainer. He got his degree, interned at a gym to gain some experience, and even wanted to give online coaching a try—that is, until he Instagram DMed the founder of DOGPOUND in LA (which was newly established) and asked for an interview to become a trainer. His wish was granted, he flew out to LA, nailed the interview, and he's now living in West Hollywood where he trains celebrities like Justin Bieber and Adam Levine (maybe you've heard of them?). In all honesty, I couldn't be happier for Austin and it's very much deserved. But you've gotta hear all the twists and turns (plus other random gems) in the story for yourself, so make sure you check this one out. Dreams do come true, my friends! Happy listening.
