Description

The If You Could See Me Project is a multi-media initiative that looks past labels and surface judgments to see real, diverse, fascinating people living with mental health diagnoses. They are mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, friends, artists, activists, veterans, and above all human beings with whole lives not defined by their diagnoses.

People don’t take the time to see each other. We make judgments, we attach labels, we assume – we often do not see. Founder Erin Mahone, believes in seeing, hearing, learning, and being present with one another. The worst thing that a person can feel in this life is invisible. To be seen is to be truly alive. The #IfYouCouldSeeMe project is a relationship between storyteller and audience; an understanding that through sharing, and by witnessing, we are all being seen.

We are so excited to be welcoming in James to out IYCSM podcast family. James E. Bullard is a Southern gentleman and peddler of optimism, listens to and works with people interested in living their lives more fully. Their stories combined with his experiences help this avid traveler, entertainer, and writer share insights to inspire more joy and squelch fears in squeezing the most out of every moment. Chockablock with anecdotes and colorful vernacular, a conversation with James isn’t one you’ll soon forget. And hopefully, it’ll put you on a fast track to getting more out of what you’re putting in.
To hear Episodes as they come out follow us at "If You Could See Me Stories"Donna Johnson Edwards is, in the words of William Shakespeare, small but fierce. She stands just under 5 feet tall and admits to having to shop in the children's section from time to time. In spite of, or maybe because of, her tiny stature, Donna exudes power. She doesn’t realize it because her new reality differs so completely from who she was prior to the Traumatic Brain injury she experienced in 2016 that changed her life forever. Her courage and commitment to her healing, the storytelling process, and the honesty of her storytelling is an inspiration. This is her story. I met Donna in 2018 when she became a member of my ReStory personal narrative writing and storytelling group at Life in 10 Minutes, in Richmond, Virginia. She made it known early in the process that she had been referred to the class by her therapist as part of her healing from a traumatic brain injury. Her courage and commitment to her healing, the storytelling process, and the honesty of her storytelling was inspiring and endearing. In 2019, Donna joined the If You Could See Me Project performing her story in our June event that year. Donna’s is a story shared by so many who experience disabling conditions or events which alter their mind, body, and probably more than anything their sense of who they are, their value in the world, and often leaving them scrambling to find the appropriate resources and support to return to functioning. Donna’s ability to talk about her experience and to advocate for herself and others, is a reflection of her fierce resilience.Disclaimer: This story is for entertainment purposes only. If you or someone you love is experiencing the effects of any medical or mental health condition, please seek medical attention. This series is not intended as medical or therapeutic advice and should not replace the engagement of a medical or mental health professional.

It All Started With… A Broken PelvisThe If You Could See Me Project is about taking shame off the table and bringing your whole self to your life. Well in 2019 things changed for us as they did for the rest of the world, and we had to find new ways to reach those goals. Even if you don’t want to tell your story you can listen and feel comfortable in knowing you are not alone. It All Started With… A Broken Pelvis, is the first season in what we hope will be a long series of stories. We have a very special treat for you today. A year ago we had to do something very different. Covid was just ramping up and shutting everything down and we had a group of amazing women that had been working hard leading up to their If You Could See Me presentation. Then the world closed down so we here at if you could see me didn't want to give up the opportunity for these women who worked so hard to tell their story. So Each of these women, Kerri and I met in an outdoor public space masked and ready. We recorded each of their stories and did our first If You Could See Me broadcast. We went live on streamyard and youtube and we had a show. Today, I want you, our faithful friends and podcast family to have the opportunity to hear these amazing and strong women's stories. This is what we are about, empowering people to tell their story, to take shame off the table not only for them but for anyone who is listening. We know it gets better and we are here to help you find a way to tell your story. Join the movement check out our website to see all the ways you can join or follow us on Patreon. And now... here is our rebroadcast of If You Could See Me: Into the Light.
Today we talk to one of our many If You Could See Me Project family members. Tammy Ozolins lives on the bipolar spectrum. We are excited to hear from her as a teacher and a coach in the covid climate how to navigate trying times and mental health challenges. Today she is here to help bust the monolith of a bipolar diagnosis, and the generalizations. She tells us how she advocates for what she need, how she respectfully educates those around her about her diagnosis. The If You Could See Me project began with a bout of synesthesia in the shower when as I washed my hair I envisioned the hashtag. In that moment I knew that this was my mission: to help foster creativity, facilitate self-compassion, remind people of their innate goodness, and provide a nurturing space for them to find the truth of themselves within the depths of their life's most challenging moments...and then speak them out loud for all to hear. There’s a lot going on here at The If You Could See Me Project!Work with Erin Mahone as a coach, join an If You Could See Me cohort and become one of our brave storytellers, subscribe to the ReStory Community and receive exclusive monthly perks, bi-weekly zoom meetings with amazing people, and writing prompts to help you gain insight, grow your story, and commit to your goals.
