Urban Apologetics

Urban Apologetics

2021-06-2136:21

As it is in any culture, there are unique belief systems that spring up in response to the distinct experiences of people within a community. Oppression and/or racism in America and in the church has led to the formation of cults and black religious groups such as Hebrew Israelites, Moorish Temple of Science, and the Nation of Islam. What is central to each of these groups is a disdain for the Christian faith and its Christocentric teachings. Eric Mason, the editor of 'Urban Apologetics: Restoring Black Dignity with the Gospel' joins Jackie and Preston to offer wisdom on how the church can equip itself to answer the questions that these growing religious groups are asking. Cancel culture is kind of a "thing" nowadays but should it be? Especially among Christians, the public shaming of certain individuals and groups may or may not be necessary but how do we determine when "canceling" someone is the righteous thing to do? Jackie and Preston will discuss the topic among themselves to see if they can come to some kind of conclusion on the matter.
'The Black Church: This Is Our Story. This Is Our Song'. a documentary released by PBS, recently explored the story of the black church. What if it's a means to help all people heal mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Listen as Jackie and Preston discuss their own experiences with therapy and why they believe every Christian should get some.

The Idolatry of Marriage

About a month ago, Jackie conversed with KevOnStage about sexuality and not surprisingly, it was met with a lot of controversy. One aspect of it that seems to be the most alarming was Jackie's statements on self-denial. On this episode of 30 Minutes w/The Perrys, Preston and Jackie dig more into the concept of sexuality and self-denial and the reasons why it's typically not welcomed with opened arms.To become a Patreon supporter: https://www.patreon.com/withtheperrysFor more information about The Perrys: www.withtheperrys.comBook recommendations:1: The Secret Thoughts of An Unlikely Convert: https://www.amazon.com/Secret-Thoughts-Unlikely-Convert-Expanded/dp/1884527809/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2FIS45XHD6MWB&dchild=1&keywords=rosaria+butterfield+books&qid=1596981519&sprefix=roasaria+butt%2Caps%2C159&sr=8-22: The Coddling of the American Mind: https://www.amazon.com/Coddling-American-Mind-Intentions-Generation/dp/0735224919/ref=sr_1_2?crid=JERRG1OU5XZI&dchild=1&keywords=the+coddling+of+the+american+mind&qid=1596981577&sprefix=the+coddling+%2Caps%2C156&sr=8-2

wow I didn't realize he took it down. he hasn't said anything about it. although I have dropped his Patreon recently so maybe he said something in there. I loved it. and I don't understand why he was surprised about the reactions to the theological thursdays. like he was legit surprised that they were so controversial.

So good! What amazes me about verse 2 is as a church, we have created this rule that if there a challenges, physically or otherwise, then sin is the root! Baffles me that this is still going on. I've been victim of this accusation when my child became ill from a unknown birth defect. Lord heal our ignorance as a church to see people and not be sin hunters!

I have avoided this epidsode like the plague until today, and I just wanted you to know that God has spoken a lot of grace into my heart through your willingness to be honest about your current struggles. So thank you for that.

I am at min 19:11 and I see that you have spoken about irksome and dangerous relationships. But you may have missed the ones in the middle, th (psychologically) toxic relationships where someone is creating division with you and others (i.e., with you and your spouse, etc), isolating you, manipulating you. That is toxic and, at some point, boundaries might look like cutting someone off. We are quick to say that people just want an easy life but I believe most people that are seeking help for "toxic" relationships are long-suffering and have been been victimized with little support for a while (possiblely years and years). In the church, we don't talk enough about toxic, spirit draining, or verbally/emotionally abusive relationships. The world just says leave the person and cut them off; but the church says endure and love. However for how long? Until you have little to no faith? Or little to no self-esteem? This can lead to a depressive state. At some point one has to discern when that type of relationship becomes injurious to your well- being.

it was your need for mercy and his response (visible repentance)! His being affected by how you were affected. Powerful because in the "church" it has been perfectly ok for only one side to be repentant while the other remain unrepentant, unaware, hard hearted, and continue in their sin. That begins to devalue the one person's humanity, spirit, and faith. It becomes ok with everyone (except God) for one to be the punching bag.

Powerful!!! Thank you for allowing God to use you in being real real! Soo important in navigating life as a Christian, this glorifies God, his mercy, power, love and grace instead of the facade and pressure of the false image of "perfection". To God be the glory!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

A great way to dig deeper into the understanding "toxic" friendships can be when someone first becomes a believer and them having to possibly discern their friendships when they were in a life of sin as 'toxic' to their new life in Jesus. Learning how to still love them but understanding that they may not be spiritually mature enough to endure that friend's constant presence without slipping back into their own ways.
