Description

Veteran journalist Joe Nocera’s neighbor in the Hamptons was a therapist named Ike. Ike counted celebrities and Manhattan elites as his patients. He’d host star-studded parties at his eccentric vacation house. But one summer, Joe discovered that Ike was gone and everything he’d thought he’d known about his neighbor -- and the house next door -- was wrong. From Wondery, the company behind Dirty John and Dr. Death, and Bloomberg, “The Shrink Next Door” is a story about power, control and turning to the wrong person for help for three decades. Written and hosted by Joe Nocera, a columnist for Bloomberg , “The Shrink Next Door” premieres on May 21st.

This was such a crazy story!!!! Going into the mental health field myself I was speechless at the lack of ethical principals this doctor held. Poor Marty was a victim. What others fail to see who comment negatively toward him is that this psychiatrist saw an opening to manipulate someone in a damaged state of mind who at the time was incapable of making decisions on his own. Because of that he was able to benefit while his patient suffered and became more socially withdrawn and isolated.

He was a millionaire with a great business, and then cosigns wills and other documents, and his excuse was "there was nobody to talk to!". Uh... How about a financial advisor or attorney? Marty was a dumbass, plain and simple.

I was glad to hear that Marty reconciled with his family. what a shame that someone who is supposed to help u, would totally take advantage of a person who obviously needed some guidance.

just as much as I don't care about rich people being taken advantage of, the fact that the psychiatrist manipulated from the position of a practitioner of medicine is not acceptable. important to bring such people to light.

A story of rich privileged people being controlled and ripped off by a rich privileged sociopath. Who am I supposed to root for?

Heather Morrison Being wealthy does not preclude a person from having human frailties such as Marty had. But he was self aware enough to realize that he needed professional help. Unfortunately, the person he sought help from was a true psychopath, who broke every tenet of his professional code of ethics. That this is a true story is all the more tragic but because Marty was weak does not make him fair fodder for a psychopath, especially one in a position of power over him as in a doctor/patient relationship. Never root for a psychopath/sociopath. They are dangerous members of society who will lie, cheat, steal, manipulate and even murder without conscience toward those they harm. They never should be the recipient of your encouragement.

Heather Morrison it's not a superhero movie, you don't have to root for anyone.

This was a bizarre and odd story, and I loved it. People can be so strange. Marty was very insecure, almost a jellyfish. He was misguided and childish, regardless of his intelligence and wealth. He was easily manipulated by a professional con like Ike, who got away with manipulating weak people as a medical professional. It's scary to know that there are a lot of people like Marty and Ike in the world. Makes me stop to thank God that I am not like either of these people, not even remotely. Thanks for a great podcast.

I think Marty is brave to share his story, and it's an important story to tell. While many of us would like to believe we would never fall victim to the Ike's among us, the truth is we are all probably vulnerable at times. The story is told well. --I wish Marty and his family the best.

Its interesting but none of the characters are sympathetic. Marty is patently an idiot and all I could think was how on earth did he run a successful business. Ike is a vile, greedy man, and his wife seems just as bad. Awful people, cool podcast.

Another great podcast! Thanks for doing all the research by exposing this fraud - people say ‘will this lead to anything?’ I’m hoping at least his reputation would be in tatters but unfortunately that doesn’t stop his narcissism from hunting new vulnerable prey!!!

This happens in interpersonal relationships as well, to isolate the other partner.

Producer Christa sounds like one of the fake voices on a training video, would have been better to get a pitbull to call Ike. Also, fishy about the call that wasn't recorded. But poor Marty, Ike is a long term pos, hope he gets a prison term for abusing his power.
