Every day almost 8million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into the oceans. What can be done about it? In this episode of Being The Change, host Rohan Thakar is chatting with Santa Cruz, California based, Christian Shaw who is the Founder & Executive Director of PlasticTides, A Non-Profit Organisation that has been closely involved with research for plastic pollution in the oceans by collecting samples across the globe. Their flagship programme- GYM (Global Youth Mentor) Programme is aimed at encouraging the youth to take responsibility for creating a plastic-free future. Here, the students create their own programmes with help of mentors. The programmes can be activities to reduce pollution or research on plastic pollution and creating solutions. Christian says, removing plastic from the ocean is not the complete solution, but reducing the dependency on the single-use plastic is. Here are a few solutions: Instead of the single-use packaged water bottle, use a reusable water bottle. Instead of taking shopping bags from the shopkeepers, get your own bag. Avoid pre-packed foods, get fresh, seasonal & locally available foods. It's just the simple habits of each person that can bring a ton of change! Nothing in the world can make you feel anything you don’t choose to, We choose it. You make your own reality. In this episode, host Rohan Thakar chats with Divyanshu Ganatra, he's a serial entrepreneur, a clinical psychologist, a thrill-seeker & extreme adventure sports enthusiast & is running a non-profit organization called Adventure Beyond Barriers Foundation(ABBF). What's amusing is that he lost his eyesight 2 decades back, when he was 19 due to glaucoma.  He is the living proof that if one has a strong will nothing is impossible.  Through ABBF, he is helping the disabled participate in adventure & endurance sports and is an activist who has been voicing his opinion for the need for inclusion & erasing the boundaries that exist between the "abled & disabled". Sport has the power to unite people, bring hope in them Divyanshu points out that "normal people" starting from school to one start working rarely meets a person who is "disabled". The reason is that there exists a boundary that doesn't allow & doesn't support the disabled to mix. The infrastructure is not built for inclusion. Something as simple as a footpath is not designed for physically disabled. He believes, with adventure sports, he can break the beliefs that a person who is "disabled" cannot do what a "normal person" can do. This episode is dedicated to commemorate 550th year of Guru Nanak Jayanti and to highlight the universal appeal that is envisaged as per the teachings in Guru Granth Sahib. We all talk about God, in the name of God we do a lot of rituals, philanthrophy etc. People of all religion say God is One but, when it comes to following, we all have our own preferences. God is indeed ONE, the One and only One Creator of the Universe and we all human, animals, nature are HIS Creations. Our favourite Hymn Ek Omkar, Satnam .... makes things clear for us. God is the Universal light, HE is Truth, HE does not come in the cycle of Birth and Death, HE is a Impartial, HE is an Ocean of Virtues and on and on....There is no end to HIS Praise. Education plays a very important role in the life of a person. In an ideal scenario, education is supposed to instill the skills and mindsets in a person to make him/her ready to take on the world and become a better human being. However, the meaning of education today has become merely about marks and results. To change that system, our guest Rahul Adhikari started an organization, Better Plus Education. An IITian, recipient of REX Karamveer Chakra Award by United Nations, and invitee to be a Global Shaper at the World Economic Forum, his urge to give back to the society and make students empowered with the skill to empathy made him launch a programme called the International Changemaker Olympiad (ICO), that gives a platform for children in schools to launch their own change initiatives to solve real-world problems and develop a Changemaker mindset. He says empathy is one skill that can enable a person to learn whatever he/she wants to learn in life, do things that are for the good of all, and be successful in whatever they do. In ICO, students launch their own Change initiatives for 4-5 months and become micro-entrepreneurs that bring solutions to daily life problems. Through this, they develop some of the most important life skills that are not taught in schools like empathy, teamwork, communication skills, problem-solving skills and more. Listen to the complete episode to understand how Rahul is empowering children to become Changemakers for life! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
