This week... We chat with Alyssa Matuchniak to talk healing, discovery, and being a voice in a fractured America. Guest Bio:Alyssa Matuchniak is a Southern Californian emerging on the poetry scene. A second-generation biracial American--the daughter of an Indian mother and an English-Polish father--she's an English teacher in the Greater Los Angeles area. She's not sure if she's a poet yet, but she's working on it. Her debut book of poetry, "Small Wars, Little Revolutions," was published and released by World Stage Press in May of 2018. Her work deals primarily with questions on mixed-race identity, the space of the female body, and the meaning of home. This week...We sit down with Marissa Engoy to chat about navigating life through difficult situations and finding creativity in the mysterious ways of God. Guest Bio:Marissa Engoy is a singer and a musician but, most notably in the context of the past few years, she’s a Succulent and Floral Artist based in the Long Beach and South Bay Areas of Los Angeles. She started “Good Morning, Cactus” in 2014 and has enjoyed making living art and inspirational succulent and floral arrangements through her small business. Her work has been published internationally, with interest in her use of color, composition, and small-scale arrangements. She likes traveling, sharing her work and teaching succulent-related workshops throughout Southern California and beyond. In time for America's Independence Day, we also explore what freedom looks for her living in this country as a millennial woman of color who has Muslim roots. Guest Bio: Sheila J. Sadr is a first generation Iranian-American poet, journalist, educator, and resident cow-enthusiast nuzzled somewhere between Orange County & Long Beach California. She writes about love, her family, her communities, flowers, and her whole heart. Sheila has had her work featured with the United Nations, Segerstrom Center of the Arts, Write About Now, and countless other gorgeous spaces. She took first place at the 2018 Jack Rabbit Poetry Slam and is a two-time finalist for the Not A Cult Poetry Book Competition. Published or forthcoming Nat. Brut, Tinderbox Poetry, BOAAT, and many other gems, Sheila has facilitated numerous writing workshops in California, including at California State University, Fullerton and California State University, Long Beach.
