In all cases, understanding the basics of training, dog behavior, selection for breeding pairs and puppies and how to manipulate and control behavior will make your time hunting more enjoyable and successful. On this episode of the Journey on the Houndsman XP Podcast Network we are going across the country to the state of Utah in order to learn more about what it takes to make a top notch bird dog. Heath meets up with Tyler Smith from Eagle Mountain, Utah to talk about the Deutsch Kurzhaar. Tyler is the Vice President of Deutsh-Kurzhaar Group North America (DKGNA). He’s been hunting DK’s since he was in grade school. That turned into training dogs full time. Tyler’s passion for DK jumps out during this conversation between Heath and Tyler. They talk about the DKGNA and what it stands for. Heath and Tyler touch on puppies, training, breed selection and holding an above average standard. Tyler gets into how important temperament is to him. This is a trip you don’t want to miss. If there is one thing for certain, it is that no matter how hard we try to slow it down, time marches on. The same goes for Dick Brothers and his line of Charley Creek coonhounds. They keep marching on.On this episode of Deep & Lonely Bryce sits down with veteran competition coonhunter, Dick Brothers, to discuss his impressive career in the sport. For more than 60 years Dick Brothers has been a competitor and breeder of coonhounds. Dick takes us down memory lane talking about his start with coonhounds, winning the 1994 United Kennel Club World Championship, and the stroke that tried to knock him down and how that event motivated him more than ever to get back in the woods. Any given night of the week you can find Dick and his hounds deep in the woods of Indiana in hopes of treeing the next raccoon. Dick has been at this sport for several decades and has no plan of slowing down any time soon. Pull up those chaps and turn up the volume. It’s about to get deep. www.houndsmanxp.comCheck out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content!SPONSORS:Cajun LightsGo WildOld South Dog BoxesJoy Dog FoodBriar Creek KenneldogsRtreedFreedom HuntersRough Cut Company

Sacred Pursuit - TL Jones

Sacred Pursuit - TL Jones

2023-03-2001:56:09

If we are to rise above the chatter, tell our own story and know how to defend our way of life we have to be intentional and intellectual. TL Jones has blessed the hound hunting community for years with his short yet precise speculative writings that make us think and reflect on ourselves and upon that which we love; hunting with hounds.TL Jones is at least a fourth generation bear hunter from the mountains of East Tennessee. His grandfather Berry Tarlton is a notable bear hunter and breeder of plott dogs. Berry resided in the Houston Valley near Greenville, TN and his strain of bear dogs is known as Houston Valley Plotts. That lineage has been passed down in the family and now TL and his son Ben carry on the family legacy.TL joins Chris on this episode to have a deep discussion about hunting, the perception of hunting with hounds and how Houndsmen can improve the often mischaracterization of the Houndsman and hunting with hounds.   Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content!www.houndsmanxp.comSPONSORS:Cajun LightsGo WildOld South Dog BoxesJoy Dog FoodBriar Creek KenneldogsRtreedFreedom HuntersRough Cut Company

Where Did the Scent Go???

Where Did the Scent Go???

On The Journey we cross paths with people who put us on certain paths. In 2009 Heath started with a new line of hounds he wasn’t familiar with, Topper Again. Mike Leonard was the one that pointed him in that direction. Mike has been a horseman and houndsman for more than 5 decades. From bird dogs to hounds Mike has spent the majority of his life following game all over the West. Heath and Mike talk about a training method Mike told Heath about 14 years ago that Heath still uses today. They talk about what Mike thinks the differences between a good Lion dog and a good bear dog is. Heath asks Mike the infamous question, can a lion shut off its scent? The two discuss theories, science, and what the heck is actually going on. The Journey is just getting started, listen up this is the diamond in the rough.  www.houndsmanxp.comCheck out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content!SPONSORS:Cajun LightsGo WildOld South Dog BoxesJoy Dog FoodBriar Creek KenneldogsRtreedFreedom HuntersRough Cut Company
In this crazy world Houndsmen need all the friends they can get. With legislative assaults, whacko extremists, Karen complains about your tethered dog, fur mommies worried about your kennel and the anthropomorphic wildlife disillusionists the world seems like a pretty lonely place for Houndsmen. On this episode of the Houndsman XP Podcast host Chris Powell is joined by the world renowned conservationist and widely accepted spokesman for true wildlife management, Ivan Carter. Ivan has hosted multiple television shows on multiple networks to tell the true story about wildlife, management of wildlife habitat and how hunting plays a valuable role in the process. Ivan has traveled the world showcasing efforts of wildlife experts. He recently traveled to Utah from his home in Zimbabwe to work on a project with the Utah Houndsmen Association and Brigham Young University to collect data on mountain lions. He has been a strong voice and supporter of the anti poaching K9 teams in Africa that have made a huge impact on Rhino poaching. He worked with the Wildlife College in Africa to develop the program. Most importantly for our efforts as Houndsmen, he is willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with us, to tell our story and showcase our value to the entire world.www.houndsmanxp.comCheck out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content!SPONSORS:Cajun LightsGo WildOld South Dog BoxesJoy Dog FoodBriar Creek KenneldogsRtreedFreedom HuntersRough Cut Company

New houndsman Aaron Kelly of Missoula, Montana joins Heath on this episode of The Journey. Aaron had the itch for a new adventure. As a life long hunter, he decided to research and work towards accomplishing the goal of being a houndsman. After building a pack of older dogs and training puppies, Aaron saw early success and was enjoying his journey, only to see his work and investment demolished by wolves. Larry Anderson Born: 03-22-1975Died: 02-07-23This podcast is dedicated to Larry Anderson, my friend. Larry had more people that considered him their best friend than anyone I know. I know I am not the only one that called him that. What does that say about a person?  Friend seems like such an understatement for the relationship I had with Larry. It was more like a kindred spirit type thing. Larry and I had some great times in a relatively short period. We hunted together, we traveled together, we even ran a business together and I lived with him and his family for a few months.Larry set an example for our close knit family of houndsmen. He demonstrated friendship, loyalty, humility and love. He loved his friends and family. He loved his hounds like no other. Larry was not a wealthy man. He sacrificed personal lcomforts and luxuries to ensure that his hounds were fed the best feed, got the best medical care and the hunting they needed to be a great pack of bear and lion dogs. Please join me in remembering a great houndsman and human being.www.houndsmanxp.comCheck out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content! SPONSORS:Cajun LightsHavoc Hunting SupplyGo WildOld South Dog BoxesJoy Dog FoodBriar Creek KenneldogsRtreedFreedom HuntersRough Cut Company
