In episode 82 of The C-Word, we chat with Leah Bennet, a designer, dancer, creative and proud Wudjari Noongar woman with family ties to the Ravensthorpe region. Growing up, she didn’t actually know she was Aboriginal and due to the times in which her grandad and ancestors were alive, it was something that wasn’t really discussed. Unfortunately, that means a lot of cultural knowledge wasn’t passed down and this is something she felt she missed out on. And she knows there are a lot of people in the same situation as her. Disconnected from Country or who have grown up with little cultural knowledge. So, she decided to focus her career on creating spaces that allow all people, both indigenous and non-indigenous to develop an emotional and tangible connection to culture through design. Her goal is to design interiors that are centred around culture and create a range of interior products that fits seamlessly into any contemporary space to bridge the gap in the market and give First Nations culture the appreciation and respect it deserves.
