Kevin starts the episode by discussing the trade deadline and the trades that have already been completed. We have seen 10-12 trades already prior to the deadline which is less than 48 hours away. The Astros have made multiple moves the fortify the bullpen, but not to be outdone division foe Oakland A's added one of the top bats on the market. Kevin then talks about the Yankees, who have made the biggest splash so far, by trading for Joey Gallo. This trade is a win for the Yankees, as Joey Gallo should dominate from the left side in Yankee Stadium. Kevin wraps up the show discussing the rumors we are hearing around the league. Max Scherzer sounds like he will be dealt within the next 24 hours, as well as Craig Kimbrel will be moved. Will your team make any moves before the deadline? Patrick is back with a new entertaining episode of the GSMC Baseball Podcast! Patrick starts today's show off with a profile on what could be the biggest trade deadline acquisition of the year. Bryant has made his value through the roof this season playing so many positions that he can now be classified as a utility player. Following that Patrick goes into the long and tragic story of baseball in Cleveland. Disclaimer: This episode was recorded prior to Cleveland formally announcing the new name change to the Cleveland Guardians. These three segments follow baseball in Cleveland from 1894 through the 1993 season. Patrick goes over amazing players that have come through Cleveland, and one may surprise you just as much as Patrick! Patrick talks about the Cleveland Spiders, Blues, a Cleveland team in the National Leauge, and so much more! Kevin starts the episode by discussing the recent news that the Cleveland Indians have decided on a name change for the 2022 season. The new nickname is the Guardians. Kevin breaks down how and why Cleveland decided on this nickname and how they took the easy way out in this decision. Kevin then breaks down the trades we have seen so far across MLB. Nelson Cruz was traded from the Twins to the Rays. The Rays get a key bat to add to their lineup but the Twins received a very nice return for a rental. The Padres also added Pirates All-Star Adam Frazier. The Padres now have a bit of a logjam at second base, it will be interesting to see how playing time is distributed for the remainder of the season. Kevin wraps up the show with a recent breakdown of the standings as we are less than a week away from the trade deadline. The top teams have begun jockeying for position when it comes to postseason seeding. Who will make the next big move? Kevin starts the episode by previewing the upcoming Olympic baseball tournament. It only involves 6 teams this year and the host country of Japan is the favorite. The USA roster is comprised of mainly minor league level players as well as some MLB veteran free agents. The USA has been given the 3rd best odds to win Gold. Kevin then discusses every team's approach for the upcoming trade deadline. The entire NL East looks to be in buyer mode with the division still being up for grabs. The NL West is in add mode as well with all three teams looking to win the division and avoid the Wild Card game. Kevin wraps up the show with updates on the injuries that have been piling up across baseball as well as the latest rumors we are currently hearing. Current injuries are going to play a big part in the upcoming trade deadline. Patrick welcomes everyone into today's episode of the GSMC Baseball Podcast describing some of the best in-season trades that led to a trip to the World Series. This list includes guys like Andrew Miller, Jake Pevy, Ben Zobrist, and much more. Patrick follows that segment reacting to mlb.com's "Post Season Race Rankings". Patrick gives his takes and defends one playoff spot race, and it was not the AL Central. In the third segment, Patrick does a profile on that of Grady Sizemore and wonders what could have been. In what looked to be "Generational talent" injuries kept him off the field once he signed his first big contract and could not live up to it, but how and why did Sizemore fail? Patrick has those answers in today's episode. Finally, Patrick breaks down one of the most fun teams in MLB history, and how the 1990 Reds lead by "The Nasty Boyz" shocked the world. From going coast-to-coast in the division to sweeping the Oakland A's this team was a lot of fun. Kevin starts the episode by talking about how we are underway here in trade season for 2021. The Atlanta Braves started us off by adding two veterans on expiring contracts to their roster. Joc Pederson and Stephen Vogt are now Braves. The entire NL East is in "Buy" mode due to the fact that no one has been able to run away with this division. Kevin then gives his Farm System Rankings following the 2021 Draft. The top teams remain pretty consistent due to the top-level talent in the organizations but the movement really came in the middle part of the rankings. Did your team rise or fall in the rankings? Kevin wraps up the show discussing the games from this weekend and talking about the standings. Two out of three of the National Leagues divisions are up for grabs and the race should go down to the wire. The American League East and West also look to be up for grabs.
All-Star Weekend is over, and with the end of an amazing weekend comes the abysmal chaos of the trade deadline. One of the best trades that the Texas Rangers ever made, even though it was during the offseason, was Josh Hamilton. The former #1 overall pick by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays has had a very up and down life. From being on top of the world to rock bottom, repeat, Patrick goes over Josh Hamilton's story in the first segment of today's episode. Patrick then goes into a lot of trade talk, from whether a team is a buyer or seller, to what players may be on the move for segments 2 and 3. Then Patrick wraps up the show with a story of triumph with that of Trey Mancini. Mancini a year ago was battling cancer, and just last week participated in the homerun derby and put on an absolute show. Mancini's story is definitely an uplifliting story to put a smile on your face by the end of the show. Kevin starts the episode by giving his thoughts on the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game. The Jerseys were horrendous and Payton Manning bounced the ceremonial first pitch, but otherwise, it was a great success. Shohei Ohtani had himself a fantastic 24hrs, and Vlad Guerrero JR. took home the MVP award. Kevin then gives out his grades for the MLB Draft. He discusses each team's top pick as well as a potential sleeper pick. Arizona, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and Boston each earned A's for their drafts. Houston and Tampa Bay did not earn as high of a grade. Kevin wraps up the show giving his top trade candidates for this month's trade deadline and possible destinations for each player. There are a ton of available players and plenty of teams with needs. We should see a ton of moves made in the next two weeks.
What a weekend we have just had. There is so much to talk about and Patrick wastes no time in getting into it. Patrick waited to record the first segment until after that awesome 5-2 victory by the American League. Patrick recaps the historic 91st Midsummer Classic and how some of our 41 first-time All-Stars fared. Patrick follows that segment up by going over the amazing event that was the Homerun Derby. The "Polar Bear", Pete Alonzo, came ready to attack anyone who stood in the way of defending his crown. Following Derby talk, Patrick dissects some of the first picks in the 2021 MLB First-Year Player draft. Kevin starts the episode by talking about the 12 players who have opted out of the All-Star Game which has lead to a new record of 40 different players being named an All-Star. He also gives his gambling advice for the "best bets" for the Home Run Derby such as, who has the best value, over/under longest home run of 510.5 feet and more! Kevin then discusses the recent 7 inning No-Hitter thrown by the Rays, it is the 9th "unofficial" no-no of the year this year and the 2nd 7 inning no-hitter. He also talks about the league leaders in statistics at the break, there are a few recent surprises. Kevin wraps up the show by breaking down Round 1 of the MLB Draft, he discusses every pick and gives his thoughts on the prospects and how they project at the professional level. Kevin starts the episode by discussing Shohei Ohtani breaking the record for most home runs in a season by a Japanese player. He also speaks about how Shohei is doing things that we have never seen before in the MLB. Babe Ruth, the most common comparison to Ohtani, wasn't even close to matching the numbers that Shohei is putting up. Kevin then discusses All-Star Game snubs. Every year a few players are deserving of making the mid-summer classic but are left off the roster. Kevin talks about 10 guys who you could make a case for and deserve to be on the squad this year. Kevin wraps up the show with his final 2021 MLB Mock Draft. He has some surprises in the top 10 with 4 high school Shortstops being taken. He also has Kumar Rocker falling in this mock draft. Welcome back! In today's episode, Patrick starts gearing up everyone for the All-Star game, which is less than a week away! Patrick opened today's show with some standing updates. After that Patrick goes into deep analysis of some players from MLB's Future's game. Patrick tells a story about Shane Baz and analyzes some of the top prospects in baseball. The first half of the show is a build-up to the last half and Patrick's next episode. Patrick breaks down a trade that contending teams should consider making, and which all-stars could be on the move. Martín Dihigo is one of the most under-appreciated players, as are far too many, to only play in the Negro Leagues. This cat could do it all on the field, and technically is the first two-way player to both pitch and hit in an All-Star game. He also gets into the recent spin rate trends over the past week since the implementation of the new rule. Kevin then discusses the CWS and National Champion Mississippi State. This is the first "Team" national champion in any sport for Mississippi State. The Bulldogs bullied Vanderbilt and the pitching staff of MSU was extremely impressive leading the way to the title. Kevin wraps up the show with his updated Power Rankings. The Giants are once again the top team in the rankings but positions 2-6 are very much up for debate.
