In episode 19, I had a down-to-earth conversation with Harrison Rose, Co-founder and Chief Customer Officer of Paddle about what it takes to build an incredible 'company culture' as the company scales.   As Paddle rapidly grows, its goal is to be the best place to work in London, England. To show they're serious about this they've gone to extraordinary lengths to make their employees happy including giving every team member access to mental health coaching, running mindfulness sessions at lunch, and providing every non-technical member of the team free coding lessons (to name a few).   For those not familiar with Harrison, he began working in software at the age of 16 while still in school. At 18 he co-founded Paddle, leading the go-to-market and commercial efforts, with revenues tripling each year since launch which has made Paddle one of the fastest growing software companies in the UK according to Deloitte Fast 50.   Enjoy!   P.S. In this podcast session, I had a fascinating conversation with Stephen Ghigliotty, Director of Curriculum Development at the Canadian Marketing Association. During the episode, Stephen and I discuss his unconventional career path as well as the details of the upcoming launch of Canada’s first-ever Chartered Marketer designation program offered by the Canadian Marketing Association. Personally, I believe this type of program is a significant advancement for Canada’s marketing profession and will play an important role for years to come in helping future chartered marketers assert marketing’s overall contribution to both the C-Suite and business. For those not familiar with Stephen, he grew up on the Jersey Shore long before Snooki and her clan made it iconic. In the late 80’s he graduated from Culinary school, serving Julia Child dinner on campus during graduation week and then became an acclaimed pastry chef, with original recipes featured in the New York Times Magazine. After working at Accenture for 5 years, he immigrated to Canada in 1999 where he spent the next 15+ years in various senior marketing and sales roles including becoming the Director of Interactive for Canada at Saatchi & Saatchi where he managed the online marketing of brands such as Toyota, Maple Leaf Foods and many others. In 2014, he began guest lecturing at the University of Toronto and eventually developed a three-course certificate program that is still offered called “Multimedia Storytelling and Content Marketing.” Currently, he and his team are creating a two-year online program for the Chartered Marketer professional designation from the Canadian Marketing Association, the largest and most respected such organization in the nation. In this podcast session, I sat down with friend and serial tech entrepreneur Dmitry Buterin. Dmitry is the founder of three multi-million dollar businesses, including Wild Apricot — a leading membership management software company that he grew from 0 to $10M before it was acquired in late 2017 by Personify. He’s also an angel investor and advisor to several tech and blockchain businesses one being BlockGeeks - a top online resource for anyone who’s interested in learning how to become a world-class Blockchain developer. Dmitry also happens to be the proud father of Vitalik Buterin who is the creator of Ethereum, which - as of this writing - had a market cap of $46 billion, making it the second most valuable crypto network next to Bitcoin. Whenever we meet our conversations tend to cover “a lot of ground” and this one was no exception. During the session, we covered a variety of topics including sabbaticals, personal growth, parenting, entrepreneurship, business culture and leadership, and even blockchain. In this session, I had the opportunity to catch up with Angus Reid (@angusreid64) — my old college teammate from Simon Fraser. Angus recently retired from professional football after playing 13 amazing years for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. The BC native played in 200 professional games placing him in the top 10 all time for games played by a BC Lion. Throughout his career, Angus has also been a 3-time all-star, 2-time Grey Cup Champion and 5-time team captain. A long shot to make it and considered too short and too small by pro football standards, Angus beat the odds. He didn’t even begin playing football until the eleventh grade. He then missed three of his five collegiate seasons with a severe stomach ailment, making it back for his senior season and becoming only the 6th All American in school history. Angus became the 4th overall pick in the 2001 CFL college draft by the Toronto Argonauts, only to be cut by them following his first training camp. It has been through sheer relentlessness and determination that Angus was able to not only fulfill his seemingly impossible dream, but also be able to do it longer than almost anybody else. Today Angus has become much more than simply a football star. He’s a true fixture in his community and speaks non-stop across both Canada and the U.S to businesses, schools and sports teams on what it really takes to make your dreams a reality. During our conversation, Angus talks about what it took to fulfill his seemingly impossible dream. Enjoy! This session - like the podcast - is a bit of an experiment. It’s shorter than the previous two sessions, has no guest and is one where I discuss why the Chief Marketing or Marketing Leader role is the hardest position in the C-Suite or management team to get right. I finish up the session by suggesting what Founders and/or CEOs might do to improve their odds of getting it right as well as what Marketing Leaders and/or CMOs can do to help in the process.
