After she became aware of how little she got to see her father, she began chasing after perfection in every way she could think of to “earn” his attention... until she developed an eating disorder and eventually attempted suicide. She came to learn self-love and to take responsibility for her own pain and healing journey. As a teenager, she resisted help because she was unwilling to admit that everything inside was not perfect. It wasn’t until her late twenties that she came to understand that her struggles stemmed from the pain she felt from seeing herself as a victim of her father’s abandonment. Laura shares her insight of how healing comes from taking baby steps like practicing daily thankfulness, finding a group of loving people to support you, making healthy body choices, and figuring out in therapy what is causing you distress. It also comes from realizing that you alone have control of your life and choosing to see yourself and others through a compassionate lens. If you find yourself triggered into an emotional state, try asking, “What caused this? How can I fix this?” rather than allowing yourself to explode into a huge, long emotional display that makes you feel better because you are embracing your status as a victim. There is much stigma admitting we are struggling with mental health issues or even just that we have emotions. The stigma doesn’t make sense because everyone has struggles, and many who hide it, wish there was someone they could share it with. If we suppress difficult feelings, they can spread like cancer making it harder to heal. Sharing can lift such a huge burden off of your shoulders. If parents or others are not supportive, find a mentor you can talk to who will not report back to them because to live your best life, you need support. Finally, Laura shared with us about how she cares for her brother, Richard Junior, who is on the autism spectrum. Despite him not being able to give back as someone in a typical relationship would, she appreciates what he does give her, simply through his outlook on life. Richard Junior has taught her many things about life and love. As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. She highlights how she chose to be in the moments that are phenomenal, chose to highlight the gratitude moments and chose to live with an open, grateful heart. She shares how we can all invite miracles to our lives by focusing on the constant practice of gratitude, and coming to peace with things that didn’t go our way. A key strategy she shares is how she decided to undertake starting and ending the day with a smile, despite the challenges of that day, the hurt, pain or disappointment, and focus on gratitude, which allowed her to see miracles throughout the year. Matana offer us her "Gift of Light” special program, where she offers her listeners the option of working with her 1 on 1, over 8 sessions. She returns to tell us of how teachers face an uphill battle in the field, boots on the ground, in the daunting challenge of helping teens who suffer with mental illness. She chooses to highlight the importance of being a friend to a student rather than a disciplinarian. In one instance, this technique resulted in a 6th grade student confiding to her years later, that her support drove him to not only graduate, but to join the marine corps with pride in who he was and what he became. Many teachers are overwhelmed with the daunting task of teaching. However, awareness and sensitivity can often save the lives of their students. Being a supportive role model can often be the step that can bridge the gap to someone who is worthy of confiding in. Often, parents too may not be aware of the needs of their children and allowing the dialog to open up in a safe, healing space can be the difference between a child who opens up and a child that suffers in silence. That vulnerable bravery that a parent can muster is heroic and should be adopted by parents and teachers alike. Parents, like teachers, should ask questions when they notice something is different, but should then be patient. Don’t badger them. They know you’ve asked and are willing to talk. A good rule of thumb is to ask no more than once a day. Children are in the process of building their self image, want to be popular, and are bombarded by messages. Not only in person, but online. They need encouragement to be popular for being kind. They need to learn coping skills for when they experience bullying, and they need to know it’s okay to ask for help and who to go to. As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. In mental health, Together is better. Her untimely passing this past week brought forth stories of an incredible individual, who harnessed her innate talent to help others challenged with struggles, mental health issues, personal problems and become a life long devotee to public health organizations, all with extreme humility. Her focus was not myopic. Her vision was broad. She undertook personal responsibility to helping those with no one to help them, providing a listening ear, word of comfort, sage advice, albeit peppered with deep, profound and sensitive wisdom. She not only mastered her craft but made it the standard to which all others would strive to reach. As we begin 2021, Matana reflects back on some of the gains made last year, and how she implemented tools to heal, and looking at lessons learned from Dr. Weisbord on how to incorporate her lessons in humanity as tools to healing. It is crucial to learn how to shield ourselves and create boundaries from things that are harmful to us and to become aware of our triggers. We learn to say “no” things that will hurt us and give ourselves permission to ask, “Is what I’m going to do going to help me in my recovery, or is it going to set me back”. We reflect back on 2020 not as a year of failure, but instead, we celebrate the growth we’ve accomplished in our desire to improve and grow. Our actions - the steps we’ve taken and our intent and drive to become better, prove that we have the proper motivation, we will succeed in our goal and we should write down all the gifts that resilience gave us throughout the year. In her TED Talk entitled “The three secrets of resilient people”, Dr. Lucy Hone, who lost her daughter in an automobile accident, shares with us a powerful map to increase our ability to heal and move forward. As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. In mental health, Together is better. Paul Cummings had a stroke three years ago and lost his speech, the ability to understand others, the ability to read and write and difficulty moving his muscles. Doctors told him he would never be able to write or speak again. Paul advocated getting a coach for whatever we are trying to accomplish. Kristina, his first speaking coach, was his speech therapist She gave him a book of 40,000 words, to which he devoted 14 hours a day tracing and copying. He didn't know what the letters were, how they sounded, or what the words meant. Now, he knows 30,000 of those words and teaches others  with similar conditions to read and speak again. Prior to his stroke, Paul was a world renowned speaker on the topic of positive mindset. Although his speech was shut down by the stroke and he was unable to share his wisdom with others, he followed his own advice throughout his recovery. It only took him 6 weeks to learn how to write again. When a person’s brain has known how to do something in the past, it doesn't take as long to recover that ability again. Paul practices the technique of speaking words in different kinds of voices so that his brain can remember the phrase in different ways. Paul emphasizes that negativity has no place in the recovery process. When doctors and loved ones preach that one is doomed, tune them out and speak positive affirmations into your life. With belief that one can get better and the willingness to work incredibly hard to get there, recovery is possible. As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. In mental health, Together is better. After having seven episodes of psychosis and Bipolar I over the course of five years, Zahava List finally got through five years without a single episode. During those five years, she started an organization called Chazkeinu, which offers a support group to Jewish women and their families who are dealing with mental illness. Prior to her most recent manic episode, Zahava was scheduled to be a returning guest of the show, but the most severe manic episode of her life delayed plans. While manic, she made unsafe decisions that led her to seek hospitalization, and attempted to act on suicidal thoughts for the first time while in the hospital. Although she was absent from partaking of the Rosh Hashanah Holiday with her family, she had a strong support system, and her loved ones support her unconditionally, love her and believed she could heal. She did not have complete success with medication and therapy and underwent electric convulsion therapy. Zahava’s children were aware of and dealt with her manic episode. She speaks with them about her illness in casual conversation in their house. It’s not hush-hush; it’s not a mystery to them; they are not feeling frightened, alone, and unsure about it because their parents have explained it at their age level and do not try to keep it a secret. Zahava knows there is hope for her to heal from her most recent bout of illness, get her memory back, and to continue making an impact in the lives of women struggling with mental illness and their families. As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. In mental health, Together is better. We meet Brian Reynolds, a world record-holding runner, who also happens to be a double, below-the-knee, amputee. He shares his lifelong experiences growing up and overcoming. Sadly, Brian was born with a condition that made him very susceptible to illness. At just four years old he came down with meningitis, an infection that’s taken many lives. As a result of his illness, he woke up in the hospital without his legs. However, Brian isn’t the type of person to dwell on that and the sadness that could rightfully overtake and debilitate a person. To the contrary, he assures and inspires us how he is lucky that this is all he lost. He didn’t always have an easy time of being proud in his own skin. As a young boy, he heard another child make a negative comment about his "legs" and instantly put on full length pants. It wasn’t until after college when he finally took the pants off and put on a pair of shorts. He shares with us how liberating an experience it was for him. Not long after, Brian began to run. It wasn’t a comfortable experience at first but he found joy in it and he discusses how discomfort helps teach us to push through the pain for the things we love. We learn from Brian the power of inner strength and his personal hurdles to becoming an amputee runner, that we might not have never thought of or imagined. Brian is clearly not satisfied with just being. He’s all about pushing himself to see what he can accomplish next. While we may choose to not be as hard on ourselves as Brian demonstrates of himself to the world, we can learn volumes from his mental and inner strengths. Brian is not just an inspiration to people with physical or mental disability, but to everyone who is alive. As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. In mental health, Together is better. As the end of 2020 nears, Matana reflects back on the changes, growth and hurdles that we've seen and learned from. Inspired from the positive moments, we focus on the power of resilience and our commitment to keeping this attribute a constant thread in the fabric that weaves us. The year was filled with unstoppable curves in the road of our normal and regular and we've all had to adapt and not be brought down. Refocusing our mantra to, "And that's ok", is a message learned from Ari's mentor, and Matana recognizes the power of this message, as a tool of flexibility to getting through moments that we thought impossible. Critical decisions at times of challenge define our durability and the stuff of what we are made of and 2020 brought us face to face with our challenges. Rigidity doesn't serve us well during crisis and in this episode, we review the beauty of mindset keeping us on the straight track to positive mental health. As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. In mental health, Together is better. In continuation of Part 1 of this episode, we are joined again with Miri Grunhaus & Fally Klein, who share with us their wisdom, insight and experience in the journey of mental health, and healing with gold. If you have not yet heard Part 1 of this episode, please listen to it here, before listening to this episode. In this stunning interview with personal friends and collaborators Fally Klein, a women’s empowerment facilitator, and Miri Grunhaus, a fashion designer with purpose, we gain a newfound understanding of healing. Both women have experienced tremendous pain in their lives, but it is what they learned from their pain that gave them purpose, and ultimately brought them together. If we learn to sit with our pain rather than shy away from it, they share, we can catapult ourselves into lives of deeper joy and meaning than we ever thought possible. For Miri, this meant shifting from a lucrative career in graphic design to a completely new industry: fashion. Without even knowing how to sew, Miri decided to empower women to heal themselves by building a fashion line around the Japanese concept of kintsugi. Just as broken pottery is mended with gold to highlight the breaks, Miri’s choice to own her story has led to a richer, more fulfilling existence. For Fally, turning her pain into purpose has meant leading holistic healing workshops for women. Rather than trying to “fix” or numb out pain, Fally believes in diving straight into it. Within pain, there is always the potential for transformation. Fally happened to wear one of Miri’s kintsugi dresses to one of her workshops – the first in a long list of coincidences that brought these women together to do the work they are meant to be doing. Today’s episode will renew your belief in magic: the authentic kind of magic that happens when we choose to embrace what life gives us and own our story. As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. In mental health, Together is better. If you need more support in your mental health journey please reach out to us in our private Facebook group. We also offer free 30-minute fitting calls for our coaching program. As children are returning to in-person schooling, we reflect on the time shared together over the past couple of months. As many people have been ignoring the positive, we try to embrace it. In this episode, we discuss lamenting how children going back to school, both because we miss their time together and the new restrictions they face in their day to day. We all have choices, and each family has to handle how they make their choices. We talk about masks and following the rules. We’re living in a world that is quick to cast blame, and sometimes we desire to sit in the victim seat instead of doing the messy work. The modern world is a lot to deal with, but we have to ask ourselves: What can I do with what I have? We also discuss the link that seems to have been created between Covid and increased rates of suicide, delving into the idea that it might not be the masks and the social distancing that makes this link strong, but rather our culture that doesn’t know how to be uncomfortable, that’s responsible for this unfortunate rise. Some people who have been dealing with mental illness are thriving right now, while others are sinking deeper into Depression. ————————————————————————— Today's episode of Hope to Recharge is sponsored by https://Betterhelp.com/hopetorecharge.  Betterhelp.com is the world’s leading provider of online therapy. Today we are focusing on the power of  positive mindset and how it can influence our lives as career women, mothers, and as human beings. Together with my guest, we dig into topics such as how to juggle life, know who you are, tune in to your needs, grant yourself the gift of authenticity, and choose what is right. The energy and positivity of this episode are exciting! If you are female, this episode is especially for you! Our guest is Olya Hill, founder of Living Notes. Olya is a former dancer, now a creative director, and the mother of seven children. She is a beautiful soul that believes in energy and positive mindset. She believes in womens’ empowerment, choosing ourselves as humans, being authentic and evolving with life. Olya takes us through her journey as a young dancer. Having an Eastern European background and moving to the United States at just 18 years old, she retells how her grandmother had a profound influence on her choices, especially to have a large family. She tells us about the struggles of being a mother and a dancer at the same time. The expectation from her own society and the world of dance, is to show up, no matter what the excuse may be, or someone else will take your job. There is no empathy towards being a mother, especially for women artists. The most frequent attack that she had to face in her line of work was, “You were the one who chose to have the kids, so either go and be a mom or be a professional”, which is an incredibly cruel expectation.  Dance, meditation, and mindfulness saved Olya during complicated pregnancies and after suffering postpartum depression. She firmly believes that being a grounded person and having a healthy balance in life are ingredients to becoming a good parent. Life as a mother and a professional can often be challenging, but we hope that our discussion helps you to discover what is right for  you..  As Olya shared with us today, being our true selves and giving ourselves the freedom to come back to what is truly important to us are essential to success. If you need help in this process of finding what matters and defines you as a person, please connect with us in our private Facebook group, Hope to Recharge, and if you need more personal support, make sure you book your free call with Matana. -- Today's episode of Hope to Recharge is sponsored by https://Betterhelp.com/hopetorecharge.  Betterhelp.com is the world’s leading provider of online therapy. In our continuing series of mental health in the workplace / entrepreneurship, we meet Natalie Bacon, who pivoted from being a practicing business Attorney, to starting and authoring a blog, to becoming a certified financial planner and finally transitioning to become trained as a full time life coach. She shares her struggles and trauma from growing up with an alcoholic dad whose life revolved around DWI's, being in & out of jail, and his financial consequences, and the trauma of having recently lost her dad with whom she rebuilt her relationship. Often, anxiety, panic and fear of the unknown hold us back when making big decisions, but it is crucial to find self love as the first step to improving our lives and goals. Feeling good when facing obstacles help us to remove the boundaries that we may unwittingly impose on ourselves. Nathalie gives us tremendous tips, techniques and tools to mindset improvement, such as accepting what is, instead of rejecting it, using your brain to bend your current beliefs and finding the upside of the natural human tendency to gravitate to a negative mindset and instead find meaning to our obstacles and accomplish positive change. Matana shares her own real life scenarios of how goal setting and a life coach can help us achieve our desired outcomes when its hard to take that first step and how to identify and plan in advance, for events that challenge us, in order to help us make decisions in those moments and substitute things that challenge our goals with goal enhancing behaviors. All this month, we will be digging into the topic of mental health in the workplace. I get asked all the time about how we can deal with the ups and downs of work while navigating our own personal lives and what we can do to balance all life’s demands while staying mentally healthy. We are kicking off this conversation by speaking with online entrepreneur and speaker, Maley Jaxx, who in just a few short years transitioned from her career to being in the public eye with her very popular brand and online presence. During all of this professional change, she was also experiencing a very difficult time in her personal life as her marriage was coming to an end. Marley generously walks us through this season of her life where she had to focus on her business all while grieving the loss of a marriage. She shares with us about the decisions she has continually made to protect her mental health and her dedication to her vision despite the difficulty of walking through so many emotions. Sometimes life hits us HARD when we least expect it. We hope that these conversations encourage you to stay mentally strong and prepared emotionally to walk through crises in the best way possible. As Marley shares with us today, community is such an important element to our mental health, if you need a community who will stand beside you during the difficult times, please connect with us in our private Facebook group, Hope to Recharge, and if you need more personal support make sure you book your free call with Matana. We continue the second part of our episode with Aliza Bulow, whose son Dani, died by suicide. Due to his diagnosed extreme depression and bipolar, Dani's constant mantra since the age of 5 was that he did not want to live or be alive. As a loving parent walking on tiptoes, Aliza was constantly petrified of the day Dani would take his own life. She shares with us the intimate thoughts only a mother could, with extreme respect, love and fear of her son's wishes and the truth of how he didn't want to kill himself, he just didn't want to be alive. Aliza discusses her inner torment and constant worry as well as the sad feelings of relief and unintentional strange comfort in the wake of his death,  that the worries of hearing a bump in the night are no longer a reason to leap out of bed and fully aware that she "didn't give him permission but he got his wish". She came to realize that he died of his illness, planning out his death and respectfully asking his mother her preferred method, as he respected her wishes.  This powerful episode opens the discussion of how not to be afraid to engage in hyper sensitive material. How to discuss suicide without giving permission but understanding the illness. It takes greatness and a healthy frame of mind to recognize that this was not her fault , she did nothing wrong, she was not a bad mother, they were simply nothing that she could do. We also learn how parents can grow closer together despite having faced such a tragedy, and not also lose their marriage. -- Today's episode of Hope to Recharge is sponsored by https://Betterhelp.com/hopetorecharge.  Betterhelp.com is the world’s leading provider of online therapy. We are joined in this first of two episodes, with Aliza Bulow to talk about suicide awareness. Aliza shares the story of her young son, Doni, who was determined to accomplish his lifelong request of dying by suicide. She gives us insight from a parent that lives with someone with depression and a desire for death by suicide. Doni was the sixth child of Aliza and her husband and was a charming little boy. From the young age of five he began to articulate that he "did not want to be on this world". Due to his extreme mental pain, he considered different forms of death and continued to express this goal throughout his young childhood years.  As a teen, he was good looking, smart and had lots of friends and a supportive family. He was a creative thinker, young computer innovator and budding genius, and had a passion for coding for Firefox. He was not disobedient or disruptive, but simply played by his own rules. Aliza had other children with learning challenges, attention issues, sensory issues, and sleep issues, but nothing was helpful in diagnosing Doni’s symptoms. "He was a mystery, wrapped in an enigma, surrounded by a question mark all the time". He was diagnosed with extreme depression and bipolar at a young age which prevented any normal functioning and age-appropriate learning.  Aliza and her husband tried everything they could do to treat Doni’s diagnosis. Going to psychologists and psychiatrists, having Doni live with his Grandma in a remote forest and even transferred Doni to a school with children having different learning styles didn't change the fact that Doni’s death was expected. Aliza came to accept and recognize that Doni was mentally terminally ill, which allowed her to reduce her constant overpowering and crippling worrying and be able to continue to function for the rest of the family and also be available for Doni as best she could.  Sometimes we forget to talk about how hard it is to be a loved one to somebody that is struggling so hard, and we simply may not be able to understand their mind. We might try to help and prevent them from injuring or killing themselves, but we may not be able to actually understand how to comfort them. These topics are so important for us to be able to support the ones in our life that are going through this journey of suicide thoughts and conversations, suicide attempts, and actual death by suicide.   -- Today's episode of Hope to Recharge is sponsored by https://Betterhelp.com/hopetorecharge.  Betterhelp.com is the world’s leading provider of online therapy. This week we are revisiting an old episode from last year because I find this interview to be so powerful that I wanted to bring it back to all of you. I had the special honor of connecting with Anne Moss, a mother, author, and founder of  Emotionally Naked, a blog dedicated to her late son Charles Aubrey Rogers, who lost his life to suicide. In this vulnerable interview, Anne recounts the last few years of her son’s life and shares openly with us about his mental health and drug addiction struggles that ultimately lead to his death by suicide. Anne graciously talks about the vivid facts that many of us shy away from, including the stigma that families face when in crisis to mental health, and the lack of support when dealing with drug addiction.  Anne’s book Diary of a Broken Mind, comes out in October of this year, and we will have her on again to share more tips and resources to those who have a loved one who is struggling or a loved one they have lost. But first, we wanted to shares Charles’s story and let you know that whether you are struggling yourself or if you have a loved one who is, you are not alone. We will break the stigma, one story at a time, and as always, together is better. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts please connect with someone. You are not alone.
