Description

Does any of this sound familiar?

You have goals, needs, dreams, and desires. You have places to go, people so see, things to do, problems to solve. You want to be happy, healthy, and live a good life. You want to matter.

But life can be a messy business. People, events, circumstances (and your own mind) get in the way. Sometimes these are just annoying. Other times they shake you to the core. At some point, everyone has to deal with issues, barriers, problems, obstacles, emergencies, and catastrophes.

To build a good life and make it through life’s tough times, you need knowledge, skills, abilities. You need thinking tools. You need life navigation tools.

Welcome to As We Get Older. We help men find, learn and use life navigation tools that will help them have a better now and build a better future.

Winston Churchill once said - There is nothing like the outside of a horse, for the inside of a man. Not bad for a Brit. My next guest is a cowboy and knew he wanted to be one when he was 16 years old. For the last 30 years, Scott DePaolo has run the 3,600 acre Butte Creek ranch in Oregon for the Boy Scouts where he teaches horsemanship and lifemanship. He can quote Maslow, or Beecham, or the Scouting law and apply them in the appropriate dose to help just about anyone live a little better. And he has that cowboy drawl that's so easy on the ears. In this episode we explore life from the back of a horse and see what riding one can do for the inside of a man. You can find out more about Scott, horsemanship, and lifemanship at https://www.scottdepaolohorsemanship.com/
On this show I talk with Marc Miller who spent 22 years at IBM, moved on to start several thriving tech companies, did a painful stint as a high school teacher, and had a near fatal bicycle accident that changed his perspective forever.   He is the author of Repurpose Your Career: A Practical Guide for Baby Boomers. He teaches people how to find what can really fulfill them, how to chart a course to greater contentment. He has taught people from all walks of life and all kinds of fields of work in 35 countries. Join us for a talk about how to reinvent yourself and build a new future from your past.

Thinking Tools You Can Use

In this episode we talk about tools to develop your identity and purpose, how to think better and handle stress, anger, vulnerability, and relationships over time.    My guest is Michael Soto, a former United States Marine and an active volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician in his home town.    He holds  a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling, certifications in Critical Incident Stress Management, is a Certified Trauma Professional, and a Certified Family Trauma Professional.   He works with individuals, couples, and families and is an expert on the topics of stress, trauma, and mental toughness. He is dedicated to helping others improve their lives through education, insight, and change.   He loves music, martial arts, and his Harley motorcycle (which he has not had out for a ride in over 3 years - he's been working too hard).   This interview is packed with ideas and tools and was especially fun for me since I am a former firefighter.
In this episode I talk with Dr. John Schinnerer, an executive coach and organizational consultant who helps people make the most of their personal and professional potential.   John is a U.C. Berkeley-trained coach with a Ph.D. in educational psychology who has distilled the very best of research-based tools and methods to help clients overcome anxiety, and anger, and move towards a happy, contented, and purposeful life.    Some of the topics we discuss are vulnerability, awareness, mindfulness, old school vs new school, and why we need more intelligence, kindness, empathy, and communication skills.   If you don't know what is going on in your own head, you have no chance to change it. John thinks too many of us go through life half awake, operating from habit and unconscious thinking. We talk about how to figure some of this out.

Move More - Live Better

After my heart surgery a friend of mine said "keep moving Bob, just keep moving and everything will work out." He was right, and Dr. Ben Reuter would agree with him on that idea. Ben stood on a balance board for our interview about movement and what it can do for you. He believes movement should be treated as a lifestyle, not just an activity, because movement is part of what makes life complete. Want to be happy, healthy, and live a more positive life? Make movement part of your lifestyle! Find out more in this interview.
