This week we examine the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS, and determine whether Marvel's newest hero stands tall among his peers. Episode 230: Free Guy

Episode 230: Free Guy

2021-08-2802:12:21

The MovieFilm show brings the curtain down on August by talking up some of the latest releases to hit theaters and streaming, including the Ryan Reynolds video game adventure FREE GUY, and Hugh Jackman in the sci-fi psychological thriller REMINISCENCE. Plus: Thoughts on the new trailers for Marvel's ETERNALS and SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME, examining the big JEOPARDY hosting controversy, and much more!
Put on your skull ring and get ready to slam evil! For our latest commentary, the MovieFilm boys look back at 1996's THE PHANTOM, the comic strip adaptation starring Billy Zane in a purple leotard went unloved during its initial release but has embraced by a cult audience in the quarter century since. This is an old fave for Zaki but it was new to Brian, so listen in to hear our takeaways. It's a breezy chat filled with behind-the-scenes stories, interesting factoids, and lots of laughs!
THE SUICIDE SQUAD is in in theaters and on HBO Max, and we're here with our thoughts on James Gunn's gory, goofy superhero splatter-fest. Does it improve on the earlier film from 2016? Give it a listen to get our takes. Plus: Early reaction to the new Marvel series WHAT IF...? on Disney+, thoughts on the new documentary VAL, the animated film BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN, and much more!
For our latest commentary, the MovieFilm boys take a look back at CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, the movie that ushered Marvel's star-spangled superhero into their cinematic universe ten years ago. We have lots to say about this throwback directed by Joe Johnston and starring Chris Evans, including behind-the-scenes stories, character histories, and more! And whether you're watch along or listening separately, don't worry, we can do this all day.
As the curtain comes down on July, the MovieFilm boys have reconvened to talk through the latest news and reviews out of Hollywood: With Scarlett Johansson suing Disney following BLACK WIDOW’s simultaneous release in theaters and streaming, we take stock of whether the hybrid release strategy was a good idea. Plus: Remembering Woodstock '99! Bob Odenkirk’s health scare! The new G.I. Joe and He-Man controversies! And much more!
It's no walk in the park as the MovieFilm boys embark on a treacherous trek through JURASSIC PARK III, which hit theaters 20 years ago this month. Listen separately or watch along as we work through the original JURASSIC trilogy closer, directed by Joe Johnston and featuring Sam Neill reprising his iconic role as Dr. Alan Grant, and determine whether it's worthy of its polarizing reputation or not as bad as people think (or, perhaps, a little bit of both?). There's lots of fun and and laughs to be had, and if you end up hallucinating about talking velociraptors at the end of this, hey, don't blame us!
The MovieFilm boys reconvene with lots on the plate to discuss! First, fond memories of the late, great director Richard Donner. Then: Our reactions to F9: THE FAST SAGA, SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY, and MARVEL'S BLACK WIDOW and LOKI. Plus: Hail and farewell to Conan O’Brien’s late night career, and more! Hear it at Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, Spotify, and everywhere else you meet your podcast needs! With BLACK WIDOW now in theaters and marking the solo debut of Scarlett Johansson's superspy superhero, we set our commentary time machine to 2010 and Natasha's first appearance in IRON MAN 2. There's lots to say about this entry from MCU's primordial era, and we go through all of it, with production history, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and lots of laughs as we watch the polarizing sequel directed by Jon Favreau.
Today we celebrate INDEPENDENCE DAY's 25 anniversary! With the Roland Emmerich-directed alien invasion opus hitting the quarter century mark this weekend, we thought it was a perfect time to hop in our fighter jets and give the space monsters a hearty, "Welcome to Earth!" Listen separately or watch along as we talk through our memories of this seminal smash hit starring Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman, pausing to appreciate all the ways we love it so very much.
The latest FAST & FURIOUS flick is in theaters and...we haven’t seen it. So in lieu of a spoiler-filled discussion about Dominic Toretto’s latest wheels-out escapade, we engage in some introspection on the enduring appeal of the FAST saga, while also taking some big swings on what likely happens in the new film. But that’s not all! Hear discussions on the trailers for Netflix’s new MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE animated revival and the DC Comics sequel THE SUICIDE SQUAD! Plus: The Lord of the Rings gets an animated prequel, George R.R. Martin has GAME OF THRONES regrets (join the club, George), and more thoughts on Marvel’s Disney+ series LOKI!
Grab your helmet and take to the skies with the MovieFilm boys as we celebrate 30 years of THE ROCKETEER! Disney's superhero opus –– directed by Joe Johnston and starring Billy Campbell in the title role –– may have gone ignored during its theatrical release, but with it hitting the three decade mark this week, it felt like a perfect time to talk through it and take stock of what makes it such a gem. Listen separately or watch along with us as we go through the production history, share interesting anecdotes, and just generally have a blast with one of our favorite flicks!
The God of Mischief is back, and so are the MovieFilm boys to unpack the premiere episode of LOKI, the all-new Disney+ streaming series starring Tom Hiddleston! But that's not all: INDIANA JONES 5 has actually begun filming with Harrison Ford back in the hat! More dirt is being flung on the late MoviePass service! Plus: Thoughts on the trailers for SNAKE EYES: G.I. JOE ORIGINS and Marvel's ETERNALS. All that, plus Listener Letters, Recent Watches, and all the usual fun and antics you've come to expect from us.
For our latest commentary track, the MovieFilm boys mark a quarter-century of one of the greatest action movies of the '90s as we talk through director Micheal Bay's THE ROCK. Listen separately or watch along as we thrill to Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage trading banter and blows with baddies in the Bay Area, with plenty of anecdotes, observations and digressions along the way.
With Hollywood announcing mergers galore, the MovieFilm boys examine the ramifications of the Amazon purchasing MGM and AT&T spinning off WarnerMedia. But that’s not all! Plus: Remembering Charles Grodin, INDIANA JONES 5 fills out its cast, and J.J. Abrams’ STAR WARS regrets, and more! Prepare to test your might! With the arrival of the all-new, all-gory MORTAL KOMBAT in theaters this week, we thought it was a perfect time to dip into the archives and revisit the movie that started it all, 1995’s MORTAL KOMBAT (hereby redubbed KLASSIC KOMBAT). Watch along with us or just listen on its own as we delve into the history of the videogame adaptation and determine whether a quarter-century of time has been kind to it. To celebrate this week’s arrival of GODZILLA vs. KONG in theaters and streaming, we recorded a commentary track for 1976’s controversial KING KONG remake (which turns 45 this year), produced by Dino De Laurentiis. We go over the project’s troubled production history and its aftermath, and just generally have fun taking in a big budget spectacle from a bygone era. Either listen separately or watch along with us, but either way, we hope you’ll go bananas!
