Tommy Introduces the core value series to Synthesis
After our Unboxed series, we took some questions from the teens...
Most of the time we talk about God having a plan for our lives, we think of it is a road map and if you take a wrong turn, then you're out of God's will. But what we see in scripture is actually that God's will is about a person, not a destination.
Christians sometimes think that God loves them but not everyone else. But that isn't true. What we see in scripture is that God loves EVERYONE.
Many people think that the only place we can hear from God is in church. But what we see in scripture is that God uses anything and everything to communicate His love for us. Even things that are unspiritual.
What do we do after we've had an encounter with Christ? Now that we are "awake," what do we do next? We have to be ready to share. Because when we do, it announces Christ presence for the person hearing.
Most of the time when we have doubts, we feel like its a bad thing. Many of us have even been told that we need to just have more faith. But believe it or not, Jesus welcomes our doubts and questions.
Fear can get us in its grip and not let us go. How does Christ's resurrection empower us to move beyond fear?
Grief can get a hold of us and not let us go. It can paralyze us. God wants us to have life, and we can't have that by holding on to the past.
In our culture, everyone strives to be the best. That can come into conflict with the way of Christ at times. He laid down everything he had for us, and calls us to the same for those around us. How do we practice humility in a world that is shaping us to be proud?
Jesus' death on the cross reconciled us to God. It mended the relationship. Now, as we are part of God's family, we are now called upon to reconcile with others. Our acts of forgiveness are one way that God heals teh world, one block at a time.
We have all been brought into God's family and His voice is the one that we should be listening to, because he made us who we are. What family are you a part of? And what voices are you listening to?
When we leave the mountain top experience, and head back into the real world, what can help keep us on track? We have to recognize where God is working in the normal everyday. God is always there, turning the ordinary into holy.
We've realized we are free, but that God wants us to live. In order to live as the person God made us to be, we must embrace God. His invitation to join the family is constant, it's up to us to respond.
When we see slavery, we automatically think that freedom will be the answer we are looking for. But actually, freedom isn't enough. We have to remember who we are, our child-of-God selves, so that we can truly live.
When looking at the story of the Israelites being enslaved by the Egyptians, I've always looked at it as a metaphor. I related to the Israelites because I know what it's like to be a slave to sin. But take the metaphor away and it's hard for me to relate to them. I find myself relating more to Pharaoh than I'd like to admit.
It's hard to know what to do next. In life, in our walk with God. Thankfully, God is ahead of us calling us forward.
Many of us think that God is against us, out to get us, or that God set us up to fail. But actually, God is FOR us and sets us up to succeed.
