Scouting is deeply tied to STEM while working with America's youth. We need to recognize youth that chooses to fulfill the requirements of STEM within Scouting. The Nova award and the Supernova are based on excellence within a STEM discipline. Scouts that achieve this high award should be recognized and celebrated. This is not new it's just that we now recognize that everything we do in Scouting has a STEM component. Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venture, and Sea Scouts have their own STEM requirements. Scout leaders can easily incorporate the program into existing plans. This video we'll help you understand some of the basics. πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ For additional information and links mentioned in this podcast. Season 10 starts soon with the ScouterStan podcast. The small break between episodes has been kind of confusing for some. We are now introducing a new series for season 10. Most subjects this coming season will also be covered on the YouTube channel. Podcast listeners will enjoy new content that's exclusive to podcast audiences.
The New Member Coordinator for any unit is a critical role in any successful Scouting unit. This underutilized position needs to be a critical part of your unit planning. As a vital member of the recruitment team, the New Member Coordinator (NMC) oversees many tasks that include many of the adults that are often not utilized. The parents are often left out of the loop unless they get involved directly. This also leads to the complacency of the parents as they have no link to the unit other than their scout. The New Member Coordinator fills this gap and helps parents get more involved and stay informed. πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ For additional information and links mentioned in this podcast. Discover the religious emblem coordinator position within your area. There are three major positions concerning religious emblems. The council should have a coordinator that works with each district. Every unit should have a contact for all of the different faiths that this covers. Scouting has always been faith-based. The first promise in the scout oath is to God. This award recognizes individuals who have dedicated time to enrich their faiths path. On YouTube: https://youtu.be/pWK35LjVxDE
There's a lot more that scouts can get out of the order of the arrow. Leadership training is a skill that needs to be developed with young people. We dive into the urban legend of Scouting only taking one hour a week. Where did this crazy idea come from? We debunk a lot of the misconceptions that arise from recruiting claims. Leaders know that this is not the case. We discuss in detail where this may have come from and how people misunderstood this claim. Many leaders know that a quality program requires training and dedication. Not all meetings are just an hour. Excellence in adult leadership takes a lot of work and it cannot boil down to just putting in one hour a week. Video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Ddv7fE_e-yY
James E. West Fellowship Award recognizes the financial contribution to the Boy Scouts of America. It would seem that this is kind of straightforward however it's not. There are many ways to contribute and there are different levels of recognition. This is recognized by a colorful green and yellow square knot with a red border. Many recipients receive this recognition when a contribution is made in their honor. YouTube Video Link: https://youtu.be/c0-oxK2QY4k
Many scout leaders are frustrated with life scouts procrastinating towards their goal of becoming an Eagle Scout. Many factors affect young people's choices regarding time management. Scout leaders and mentors need to teach basic time management skills toward the youth's achievement of their goals. Young people need to have the basic skills to manage their time with short-range goals to achieve larger long-range goals. The closer a scout gets to their 18th birthday the anxiety levels tend to go way up if they are not managing their time. All scouts must have all of the requirements completed before their 18th birthday otherwise they will not be able to become an Eagle Scout. Life rank scouts think that they can get some kind of last-minute extension or some kind of do-over. Life rank scouts end up aging out of the ability to achieve Eagle Scout for the rest of their lives with this misconception. Video: https://youtu.be/WIdv6RyEq7U
The Historic Trails Award is achieved by scouting units in recognition of historic activity on a historic trail. Hiking metals on specific trails can qualify for this group award. Typically Scout Troops can hike and camp along the trail to give service back to the historic society. There are only three requirements for the Historic Trails Award. The transition of youth leadership to adult leadership within a Troop is critical to the survival of the unit. Scout leaders spend an incredible amount of time training youth to pick up management skills. All too often they leave the Troop without ever being asked if they could step up as an adult leader. Developing a 3 step plan for the Troop to actively recruit youth for adult leadership positions. Mentoring and coaching the youth through leadership experiences readying them to take on the challenge when they turn 18. https://youtu.be/C9ryHinbLfc
