Rarely do we think about managing our blood sugar unless our doctor tells us there is a problem. However, when we are pregnant, we have to get the glucose test to check for gestational diabetes and all of a sudden stress and anxiety sets in. What if we don't pass the test, what does it mean? When you’re laying in bed postpartum with your newborn on your chest, maybe practicing skin to skin, you never expect that little infant to wiggle off you and fall. What if we experience loss or grief during our pregnancy or around our birth? We envision the birth of our baby to be a joyous, beautiful, celebratory time. For Elizabeth Presta, no matter what level of planning and preparation she did for her pregnancy and birth, her plans still derailed and she still was left feeling emotionally empty. That picture of becoming a mom was not at all what she expected and she instantly started to question and judge herself.  We have a lot of assumptions about our pregnancy, birth, postpartum and life in general as a mother. If you were doing yoga and cycling routinely while you’re pregnant… that should be enough to prepare you physically for birth, right? What does a Doula do? What is the importance of a doula? Why can’t our partners support us like a doula? Aside from encouraging you, reminding you of your strength, preparing cool cloths, maybe with essential oils or playing your favorite music, a doula can physically help move and adjust your body to manage the pain of labor and can even supporT you to have a vaginal birth, if you so desire. While our partners can be there for our birth and support us for sure, they TOO have a lot of emotions, fears and distractions going on. It can be hard for them to be 100% fully focused on your needs. How far have you gone to have control or FEEL like you have control over your life?Aside from the to-do lists and schedules, have you ever pushed your body past its limits? A mama of 7 children… yes, you read that correctly, 7, Josephine’s path was rocky and she had no control. She went through so much stress to build her family, that it led to an eating disorder. Postpartum Depression is one of the most common conditions in women after birth. In fact, there are over 3 million cases of women per year who are suffering, often silently. Postpartum depression, commonly referred to as PPD, can alter your mental and physical state and can range in how it affects one person to another.  Today we learn from mental health advocate, entrepreneur and mama, Sasha Nicole and her severe experience with postpartum depression.
