Our True Crime Podcast

In the summer of 1997, thirteen-year-old Maryann Measles was spending time with an older crowd in New Milford, Connecticut. Her mother, Cyndi, didn’t like it, and she especially didn’t like the attention Keith Foster was giving her daughter. He called Maryann pretty. He gave her a rose. But Foster wasn’t a boy from school. Cyndi had already warned him to stay away. But the danger went beyond one man. Around Maryann was a circle of people she knew, people who would have opportunities to make a different choice. When Maryann spoke up, they had something to lose. She told the truth. They decided to silence her. At 5:38 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2008, a message arrived on a BlackBerry belonging to a young real estate agent in British Columbia. It was from her boyfriend. He wanted her to know he was on his way. The message went unread. Three minutes later, at approximately 5:41, her phone placed an outgoing call. Police would later believe the call had been made accidentally, possibly as she struggled against the person or persons attacking her. The young woman was twenty-four-year-old Lindsay Buziak. She had arrived at a vacant house to meet prospective buyers. It was a routine showing with nothing out of the ordinary. But the people who had arranged to meet her weren't there to buy a house, and Lindsay had no idea what was waiting for her behind that front door. The showing had been arranged in advance. The appointment was deliberate, and the people Lindsay had gone there to meet had disappeared without a trace. In this special October crossover episode, our good friend Brandon from Southern Gothic joins us from the Manchac Swamp to separate swamp legends from real history. In September 1915, a violent hurricane hit Southeast Louisiana, killing nearly 375 people, destroying entire towns, and wiping the small farming community of Frenier off the map. In the disaster's wake, a story spread among locals that the curse of Julia Brown, a local Voodoo priestess, brought on the terrible storm. Brandon tells us about Julia Brown's real life, the tragic story of the 1915 hurricane, and how a devastating disaster became one of the South's most famous ghost stories.
