We take a look at both sides of this issue and try and gauge the impact this new law will have on restaurant companies in California and talk about what this could mean for the industry overall if other states follow suit.
On this week's episode of The Cutting Onions Podcast and on the heels of the Restaurant Franchising Innovation Summit held in Kansas City by Fast Casual, we talk about Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. We highlight some of what we learned this week about the future of AI and Robotics, and discuss what we already see in the restaurant experience with existing brands like McDonald’s and new brands that have just launched like Kernel. This is a great lead-in to our conversation next week with Daniella Sardi, Head of Enterprise for SoundHound. SoundHound creates big-picture Voice AI solutions that drive growth for the restaurant industry.
Welcome to The Cutting Onions Podcast, Episode 78! On today's episode of The Cutting Onions Podcast, Myles and I continue the conversation we started last week around what it looks like to enter into a situation that is at best a struggle, and at worst broken, in the restaurant industry. We get super granular in this episode building on the ideas we shared in Part One of this conversation in last week's episode. We talk about some important ideas including how important it is to bring your team alongside you as you begin rebuilding the shop, restaurant, district, or company. We also talk about the key elements of effective leadership, including organization, follow-up, and clear communication. We suggest that effective leadership requires a combination of strategic thinking, strong communication skills, and a willingness to adapt and learn from experience. We also discuss the importance of prioritizing people over financials when fixing a broken situation and setting expectations with bosses or ownership groups. Key Questions we discuss: * How can we celebrate wins and reinforce desired behaviors? * What are the fears that people have when entering a challenging situation, and how can we help them overcome those fears? * How can we document our experiences and share institutional knowledge for future leaders? * How can we balance the need for speed with the need for organization and follow-up?
Welcome to The Cutting Onions Podcast, Episode 76! In this episode Myles and I start a conversation about what it looks like as a leader to enter into a situation where you might have a restaurant, district, market, area, region, or company that has significant challenges. Your people. This will be a two-part conversation, and we can't wait for you to hear this episode and we would love your feedback!

In this episode Myles has a great conversation with Pepper Lunch CEO Troy Hooper. Troy began his career in the Caribbean cutting his teeth in hotel restaurants and private clubs. A serial entrepreneur, Troy knows what it takes to succeed in business and has built his career on tried and true principles. He also offers some sage advice to anyone thinking about becoming an entrepreneur. Remember that it takes twice as long as you think it will to succeed, and it will take twice as much money. Both so very true. Troy now leads Pepper Lunch as CEO. Pepper Lunch is a 30 year old casual dining Japanese hotplate oncept with over 500 locations in Japan, Asia, Australia, and now the United States. Just hearing Troy talk about the food made our mouths water! Troy talked a lot about leadership and the importance of asking others to join your journey. There is no silver bullet to being successful as a leader. Just community and support. Enjoy this chat with Troy Hooper! We look forward to continuing the conversation with him in future episodes!

On today's episode we have an incredible conversation with Corporate Communications Expert Chris Arnold. Chris help shape the stories and communications strategies that build, grow and protect beloved brands in a complex world. Over his career, Chris has led communications in-house for notable and high-profile consumer brands such as Chipotle Mexican Grill, one of the most outspoken and transformative restaurant companies in a generation, and REI Co-op, the nation's largest member-owned retail co-op. As a trusted and unflappable counselor to senior leaders and a valued source to journalists, Chris helps companies successfully navigate everything from brand evolution to significant milestones and existential crises. During his time at notable public relations agencies and communications consulting firms, he advised clients across a variety of sectors. Currently, Chris heads communications at Darigold, an iconic Seattle-based cooperative of nearly 300 farmers who provide milk and other dairy products to customers in about 30 countries worldwide. In this episode, Chris highlights important topics around corporate communications including the opportunities and challenges of social media for businesses, emphasizing proactive work, identifying allies, and being prepared for crises. We talk about the food safety crisis at Chipotle from several years ago and what the brand did to respond to the challenge of the 24-hour news cycle and how they weathered that storm. We also discussed growth, people development, and overcoming challenges in a growing brand and how social media and the 24-hour news cycle has changed the game. One of the powerful insights Chris shared, which aligns with us so closely on The Cutting Onions Podcast, is this quote he heard and paraphrased about the power of story. "Story is more important in human development than opposable thumbs. Opposable thumbs as people let us hang on. Story tells us what to hang on to." Enjoy this amazing conversation with Chris Arnold and we would so appreciate it if you would share it with your network, along with your thoughts on the topics we talked about in this episode.

In this week's episode, Myles and I take a step back to process our amazing two-part conversation with Jay Timms. We really enjoyed our time with Jay and look forward to reconnecting with him again on future episodes.
On today's episode we dive in for another conversation with Organizational Psychologist Jay Timms on The Cutting Onions Podcast. Last week we got to know Jay and talked about how important self-awareness is as a leader, picking a direction versus a destination, how we leave our fingerprints as leaders. In today's conversation, Myles and I talk with Jay about stepping stones and stumbling blocks, what failure actually is, the 4 important questions every leader needs to ask themselves, KBI's versus KPI's, and the 3 things you must do as a leader. We are super excited to share this conversation and look forward to continuing to work with Jay in the future. We know you will love this episode and encourage you to share it across your social media channels.

We recently learned about The Great Game of Business and absolutely believe the principles it teaches, so we thought we would dive deeper into the content here and highly encourage our listeners to do the same. In The Great Game of Business the core principle is to engage your teams with transparency, share your critical metrics, help them keep score and know if they are winning or not, help them own their results, and provide them a stake in the outcome. This was a fun conversation and we would like to invite you along for the ride in learning more about this revolutionary approach to management and leadership.
In this episode we discuss some basic core principles around how we get ready for summer in the hospitality industry and how we engage our teams to own their results. We riff a bit on the amazing book Great Game of Business and we just scratch the surface of this book and the philosophy and we look forward to unpacking more of this content in the weeks to come on The Cutting Onions Podcast. Enjoy!
