Dave Nonis spent 24 years in NHL front offices, including serving as GM of the Vancouver Canucks, and Toronto Maple Leafs. Nonis kicks off regular appearances on the Ray and Dregs Hockey podcast as our feature guest this week!  Nonis and the guys discussed the BLAZING hot New Jersey Devils, and their streak putting them squarely in playoff position. Reflecting on his time in Vancouver, Dave talked knowing when a coach had “lost the room”, and when to make a change vs. staying patient with your team. He discussed working with Brian Burke, and the late Pat Quinn, and the development of a trade over time. Plus, current cap-strapped NHL teams and how hard it is to make moves being up against the cap. Headlines covers the keys to the Devils’ ridiculous 13-game ‘heater’, and Dregs talks GM Tom Fitzgerald’s willingness to add a piece. A 7-game St. Louis Blues winning streak helping them hit the reset button, the Ottawa Senators on the opposite side of things, and Malkin/Bergeron’s outstanding achievements are also discussed. Plus, Jason Robertson and Mitch Marner’s point-streaks, with Robertson getting some due recognition as a superstar in a non-traditional hockey market.  Kris Abbott joins the show and takes some heat as his NFL picks record dips below .500. A MASSIVE World Cup upset, and the sports books relishing the historic upset after having to dish out payouts in Group Stage action. Kris talks hedging bets and the effectiveness is compared to “placing bets on every colour of the roulette wheel.” Support Dregs and his dusty ‘Mo! Daniel & Henrik Sedin joined the pod! The twins talked highlights of the Hockey Hall of Fame weekend, reflected on the journey from the Swedish Elite League to being elite in the NHL, spoke on their chemistry with former linemate Alex Burrows, and discussed an NHL’er they always wanted to play with. Plus, ‘Hank and Danny’ discuss their current role with the Vancouver Canucks, and the importance of teaching players to use their teammates rather than being too individualistic.  In Headlines, the guys talk Alex Edler’s questionable hit on Connor McDavid; what McDavid’s skill does to defenders and why it should have been a suspendable play. Goaltending is a hot topic as Canucks’ Thatcher Demko’s numbers rank amongst the league’s worst, and the Buffalo Sabres shaky goaltending tandem is considered as part of the reason they’ve struggled lately. Former NHL goalie Scott Darling’s stand-up comedy career takes some heat as Darling ripped into the city of St. Louis.  Kris Abbott joined the podcast from Betano’s headquarters in Greece. The World Cup is around the corner and Canada’s chances of getting out of the group stage were discussed. This week's NFL picks centre around the Vikings and Cowboys as Ray & Dregs are banking on the Cowboys rebounding, and ‘Abbs’ has Justin Jefferson following up his ridiculous catch and making an impact on Sunday. Hockey Hall of Famer Börje Salming received an emotional ovation at the Toronto Maple Leafs game on Saturday, as the Leafs legend battles ALS. Salming’s impact as one of the first Swedish-born NHL players paved the way for his fellow countrymen to have their moment as well. Henrik and Daniel Sedin’s speeches from last night, and their unique careers are discussed as the guys talk what the bar is for a Hall of Famer. Roberto Luongo’s Italian-Canadian upbringing has Ray remembering his NHL journey, and the comforts of home, like freshly ironed boxers! Headlines includes the St. Louis Blues capturing a MUCH needed victory over the defending cup champion, Colorado Avalanche. If a struggling Blues team can use this as a springboard to save their season, and decisions ahead for GM Doug Armstrong if they don’t. Jake Muzzin’s - perhaps permanent - absence causes concern for the player’s well-being, and also for an already questionable Toronto Maple Leafs blue-line. Plus, could changes be coming as soon as this week for the Vancouver Canucks?? According to Dregs, Bruce Boudreau’s position behind the Canucks bench could be vacant any day now. Betano’s Kris Abbott was absent as he’s galavanting in Greece; he’ll be saying ‘Opa!’ when he hears the guys praise his NHL bets. However, it was another team ‘L’ on NFL picks as Aaron Rodgers heard the pod picked the Cowboys, and promptly got his groove back. Stanley Cup odds are discussed, rough starts for the St. Louis Blues and Pittsburgh Penguins have the guys eyeing if those teams rebounding could result in an improbable cup run.    Ask R+D continues the Swedish trend this week as a listener from Jämtland asks about ‘decriminalizing’ the offside rule, and sparks another idea of a ‘grey area’ for the coach's challenge. Plus, the Winnipeg Jets surprise resurgence under Head Coach Rick Bowness - coincidentally Alfie’s first NHL coach - and the brick wall that is Connor Hellebuyck.  Support Dregs and his dusty ‘Mo! Marc-Andre Fleury was watching Trevor Zegras’ theatrics from the bench last night, but the superstar NHL goalie has a plan to stop guys from trying 'lacrosse goals' on him… He talked his ‘friendly’ rivalry with Brendan Gallagher, newer sticks giving every player bruising shots, and his ability to keep it light while competing. Plus, Ray and 'Flower' shared pranking stories, including Sidney Crosby’s sneaky prank on Fleury in Pittsburgh.  Headlines kicks off with more on Trevor Zegras and the lacrosse style (aka. Michigan) disallowed goal. Ray goes ‘off’ on the current offside rules, and proposes a change to make it better. Jack Eichel returns to Buffalo with the red-hot Vegas Golden Knights, and Ray gives the player perspective of returning to your former home-rink. The guys discuss Evander Kane’s scary injury and how random incidents like it don’t happen more often, and goaltender Martin Jones gets his due, as the Seattle Kraken continue a surging start.  Kris Abbott is on a Vegas Golden Knights tour as he followed the team down to Buffalo from Toronto. However, it’s the Sabres he’s ‘banking’ on, and particularly the play of Victor Olofsson. Ray’s feeling like a ‘Rockstar’ after seeing Post Malone live in-concert with his boys, but it was another celebrity making noise in the hockey world this week. Ray and Dregs kick things off talking Deadpool aka. Ryan Reynolds and the hype surrounding his interest in buying the Ottawa Senators.  The Boston Bruins signing, and subsequent un-signing, of Malcolm Miller has been a mess from start-to-finish: NHLPA ramifications, lack of foresight for the victim, and the onus of responsibility needed from Miller’s parents are discussed. On the ice, the Bruins are rolling, while their most-recent opponent is not. The St. Louis Blues are now on a 7-game slide, the guys ponder if there’s a disconnect between the team and coaches, and talk star players needing to step into their roles. Western Canadian teams are all taking some L’s recently. Edmonton Oilers’ penalty killing, and Calgary Flames’ growing pains are amongst reasons for concern in those markets. However, the Vancouver Canucks issues seem to be reaching a boiling point. Canucks President, Jim Rutherford’s thinly veiled comments at Head Coach Bruce Boudreau, along with captain Bo Horvat’s pending UFA status, and a lacklustre record; might just spell the end for this core. The guys examine whether or not a rebuild could be coming on the Westcoast. Kris Abbott has his voice back and is using it to shed light on the “1” blemish on Ray’s 5-1 NFL picks record. He recounts a rollercoaster of emotion as he came oh-so-close to hitting his first-half Bills/Jets bet. Kris shifts focus to the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs and betting on their shaky goaltending to yield a return for his pocketbook. Ask R+D sees questions on the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals ahead of Ovy and Sid’s 63rd regular season battle, McDavid’s ever-growing spotlight overshadowing other stars, and Ray’s eclectic taste in music; from Kenny G to Posty! Three-time Stanley Cup Champion Ken Daneyko was recently honoured by the New Jersey Devils for his 40 years with the organization. The bruising defenceman turned  broadcaster joined the pod to talk the Devils dynasty of the early 2000’s, throwing furniture in 'Uncle' Lou Lamoriello’s office, current Devils roster and why the first 10-games aren’t a fluke. Plus, Ken and Ray reminisce about being roommates at the World Championships. You don’t want to miss this jam-packed fun interview with the always energetic Devils lifer!  In Headlines, the guys discuss a big Leafs win, and a tough slate of teams ahead on Toronto’s schedule. The Pittsburgh Penguins 6-game skid, including blowing multi-goal leads in two straight, most recently vs. the Sabres. Ray compares the veteran Pens to the struggling St. Louis Blues, and puts the spotlight on Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas, who signed big off-season contract extensions. Coaching is a hot-topic with the top teams in the NHL standings evidently benefitting from having a new voice in the room.  Kris Abbott is day-to-day with an illness, so he social distanced from the pod today. However, Ray ‘5-0’ Ferraro is looking to keep the streak alive, betting on an offensive outpouring from Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills vs. the New York Jets. The guys kick off Headlines with the NHL's $2.12 BILLION franchise, the Toronto Maple Leafs. A woeful western swing, the fan/media storm heading for Sheldon Keefe, and Ray discusses the Leafs falling ‘short’ of a Stanley Cup contending roster. Plus, Ray thinks the Anaheim Ducks were robbed of a goal last night, he talks the goalie interference ‘rule’, and what changes he would make.  Tage Thompson went on a 6-point bender vs. the Detroit Red Wings! The guys talk where the Buffalo Sabres think his ceiling is, Tage silencing ‘overpay’ chatter with his hot-start, and Ray gives the power forward a comparison to one of the greatest to ever play the game!  Kris Abbott breaks news on a BIG announcement as we are proud to join forces with Kris and Betano Canada in an exciting new partnership! Kris discouraged Ray from taking all his new employer’s money as Ray ‘5-0’ Ferraro chalks up ANOTHER win! A huge night for the Niners meant hitting the ‘over’ wasn’t in question for long, and Ray makes sure there’s time to gloat. Kris discussed being right on the probability of a Canucks win, and the short-term strategy of avoiding the struggling Maple Leafs. Ask R+D sees questions on Kerfoot’s missed ‘gimme’, LA Kings’ patience being rewarded with former 1st round pick Gabe Vilardi, and a question on the ‘Yzer-plan’ in Detroit has Ray making a prediction that playoffs are closer than some might think for the Red Wings.  A man and his big plate-full of meatballs had Ray playing detective as ‘What’s Bugging Ray’ makes a comeback to close out another R+D! One of the great power forwards in NHL history joins the pod! President of the Boston Bruins, Hockey Hall Of Famer Cam Neely, talked the Bruins’ hot-start; tied for first place despite their injuries, why management felt they ‘left something on the table’ after a hard-fought first round playoff loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, and the incomparable career of Patrice Bergeron. Plus, the aura of playing in the historic Boston Garden, and balancing the hockey and business sides of his role.  Headlines includes the Vegas Golden Knights strong goaltending despite both their starter and backup being injured, a Boston Bruins team playing above expectations, how the New York Rangers could land Patrick Kane, and Ray recounts visiting the Tampa Bay Lightning in their inaugural season, as a comparison to the Arizona Coyotes temporary home at Mullett Arena. The guys also discuss Sergei Fedorov’s KHL tactic of pulling the goalie in OT, and how this could happen in the NHL. A flat tire won’t keep Kris Abbott from heading to the ‘Motor City’ this weekend! Set to take in a trio of sporting events including the Lions vs. Dolphins, ‘Abbs’ discusses why the over is so high in the matchup. The importance of weather forecasts on certain bets, and why he’s taking the under for the San Francisco 49’ers visiting the LA Rams at SoFi Stadium. Dregs is siding with the undefeated, Ray ‘4-0’ Ferraro, as the duo hope to see money signs on the Niners this weekend.  The Cam Neely Foundation and comedian Dennis Leary are teaming up for the 26th Annual ‘Comics Come Home’ at TD Garden in Boston. Ahead of the NHL on ESPN’s heavyweight battle between the Rangers and Avs at MSG, Ray joins the pod from the Big Apple. Meanwhile, a ‘headshot’ on the 18th hole has Dregs and his buddies closing out golf season with plenty of group chat fodder. The guys definitely don’t ‘shank’ this one as Episode 9 takes on all the latest hockey stories you need to hear about! Headlines kicks off with Phil ‘The Thrill’ Kessel as he ties the NHL ironman streak, playing a ridiculous 989 consecutive games! The guys debate whether Kessel should be in the Hockey Hall of Fame when he retires, and Ray discusses why he doesn’t think Stanley Cup rings are always a good measure. Kessel’s disallowed goal vs. the Leafs has Ray ‘challenging’ the NHL rule book, but it’s bittersweet as it keeps Phil 9 goals back of Ray’s NHL total! Re-build or re-tool? An abysmal start for the Vancouver Canucks has the fans throwing jerseys, and the guys throw around the possible scenarios for the club. Plus, an imminent departure from Chicago for Patrick Kane, and the Blackhawks' ‘tanking’ strategy. Kris Abbott is still sees ‘action’ on the Canucks, but he’s now banking on them putting up W's! Ray has a suggestion for betting on player streaks and Kris details how he can make it a reality using single-game player bets. As his NFL picks hot-streak continues, Mr. 4-0 Ferraro is feeling confident he’ll be undefeated for at least another week.   Ask R+D sees questions on losing streaks and what it feels like being on a struggling team, which current NHL player Ray would compare himself to, and how salary cap changes might effect GM decisions going forward. Plus, the guys discuss their World Hockey Championship's culinary post-game ritual: a bucket of fries, and wine.  Headlines kicks off with a ‘hand pass’ controversy in the Toronto Maple Leafs/Arizona Coyotes game, and the Coyotes’ long run of success… in Toronto. Also, the albatross Toews and Kane contracts, and their not-so-secret dissatisfaction with the direction of the Chicago Blackhawks. Plus, a fiery Maple Leafs Head Coach, Sheldon Keefe, has Ray recounting his playing days and tough coaching styles. Kris Abbott brought a ‘Mediterranean’ flavour to the show after a jet-setting summer. He talks Aaron Judge on the cusp of history, the NFL’s wild and whacky start to the season, and much more, as the betting aficionado will be joining the pod regularly once again! Ask R+D sees questions on the asking price of Jacob Chychrun, and how he’d look on the Ottawa Senators, Bo Horvat’s contract talks with the Canucks, and Ray’s preference to see a 3-2-1 point system in the NHL.  Season 4 Episode 1 is presented by our title sponsor Canadian Club Whisky: who are asking: 'Are You Over Beer?', Boston Pizza - pick it up or get it delivered right to your door, let Boston Pizza do the cooking tonight, and by DUER: Use code ‘RND15’ to save 15% off pants at DUER.ca.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
ALL the adjectives for the Season Finale! A marathon 16-hour drive while fighting COVID symptoms (but testing negative) couldn’t stop Dregs, while Ray flew in just in time from TSN's Free Agent Frenzy to record this special BONUS episode for you. With NHL off-season moves in full swing, the guys breakdown the latest (and most shocking) news from free agency, and look ahead to next season.  How about Columbus!? The guys discuss their reaction to Johnny Gaudreau shocking the hockey world and choosing the Blue Jackets. Headlines continues with Vegas Golden Knight cap woes, giving away Max Pacioretty, and the ‘swinging for the fences’ approach. Meanwhile, do the Carolina Hurricanes have this whole cap thing figured out? Plus much more on a crazy start to the off-season, Nazem Kadri's eventual destination, and the big winner the Ottawa Senators!? Ask R&D sees questions on NHL player mindset during different transaction periods, Ottawa Senators playoff chances (YES, you read that correctly), and a special collection of Ray Ferraro hockey cards! Plus, the guys talk off-season plans and reflect on THREE seasons of the Ray & Dregs Hockey Podcast. THANK YOU for listening and supporting the podcast. See you back for Season 4! Season 3 Episode 41 is presented by our title sponsor Canadian Club Whisky: who are asking: 'Are You Over Beer?', Coolbet.co the free to play sports and casino games website, by Boston Pizza - pick it up or get it delivered right to your door, let Boston Pizza do the cooking tonight, and by DUER: Use code ‘RND15’ to save 15% off pants at DUER.ca.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The end of an epic Stanley Cup Final means another hockey season is in the books! Ray and Dregs are winding down Season 3 of the podcast as well, BUT, not before another episode (or maybe two)! The guys put a bow on a busy NHL season as only they can, with candid takes and in-depth banter that you expect from two of the best in the biz!  Ray and Dregs discuss the brilliance of the Colorado Avalanche championship team, and how it might change this off-season. Goaltending is a hot topic as Darcy Kuemper adds ‘Stanley Cup Winner’ to his resume and tough off-season decisions can’t wait with the NHL Draft around the corner. Darren’s phone is buzzing away as hockey’s #1 insider checks the pulse on HEATING up trade talks in the NHL. Kevin Fiala to LA was the first domino to fall as the cap continues to force GM’s to lose key players.  Hockey Canada continues to face backlash over their handling of an alleged sexual assault by eight players in 2018. TSN’s Rick Westhead first reported on the story, and now sponsors are taking action by pulling their longstanding support of the organization. The guys take pause on a story that goes beyond hockey and address the disturbing allegations, accountability for the organization, and the education needed to prevent similar incidents the future. Coolbet Kris is out east celebrating his birthday, and the Wi-Fi gave him no choice but to unplug! The guys are left to ‘stomach’ Joey Chestnut and the American tradition of Nathan’s hot dog eating contest. Ask R+D sees questions on a talented Winnipeg Jets forward who’s name keeps coming up in trade-talks… Blake Wheeler, inevitably leading to more discussion on Pierre-Luc Dubois. Ray’s asked about which goalies he loved to score on most, and what injuries he played through. Plus, Dregs in a bar fight!? Ray’s not the only one who’s had to battle through injuries in his career! Season 3 Episode 40 is presented by our title sponsor Canadian Club Whisky: who are asking: 'Are You Over Beer?', Coolbet.co the free to play sports and casino games website, by Boston Pizza - pick it up or get it delivered right to your door, let Boston Pizza do the cooking tonight, and by DUER: Use code ‘RND15’ to save 15% off pants at DUER.ca.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
