Description

Now this is happening. Paul Kaminski (Yesterday & Today Podcast and The Third Men Podcast) and Ryan Brady (Take It Away Podcast) host your new favorite podcast. What's it all about? Simple and easy. We trade our favorite records and talk about one album per podcast for about an hour. We each picked six albums for season one's twelve episodes. In every episode, imagine one guy is the "expert" and the other guy is the rookie. We swap roles throughout the season. We walk through the history of the albums, run through the track lists, and attempt to turn each other - and YOU, the listener - on to new music. Mostly, we listen and laugh. You may too. Please join us in conversation, discover something new, and now hear this. Please donate here.

Jellyfish - Spilt Milk

Jellyfish - Spilt Milk

2021-11-2601:46:33

Hope you're ready to join a fan club, because this episode is new and NOT a mistake! Now Hear This welcomes special guest Joe Pierandozzi to walk us through the wild, whacky and otherwise wonderful 1993 Jellyfish LP Spilt Milk. This Sturmer/Manning masterwork came in over-time, over-budget and over-blown, but has evolved into the kind of cult record that would spawn a million indie darlings - and continues to inspire to this day. Now hear this: "New Mistake," "Russian Hill," and "He's My Best Friend."Have something to say? Lucy Walsh joins us to discuss her 2020 EP When Life Was Figured Out, and this six-track tour de force features a stunning array of talents from our guest this week. Join us as we deep-dive into Lucy's roots as an intensely-trained singer and pianist, and discuss her songwriting evolution over the years alongside some of the biggest talents in the music industry. From touring the world to finding inspiration in unusual places, Lucy's breath of experience and abilities are a sight (and sound!) to behold - and the EP collection is a captivating highlight reel of but a few of her many accomplishments. Ringo Starr - Old Wave

Ringo Starr - Old Wave

2021-10-2901:25:37

What's his name? It's RINGO! What's the album we're talking about today? OLD WAVE! The best Ringo album you've likely...never heard? In 1983 when former Beatle Ringo Starr needed a new sound to revitalize his solo career, ol' Ritchie enlisted the help of Eagles rocker Joe Walsh to craft a clean, catchy, up-tempo record that embodied the very best in Starr's capabilities. But a string of flops wrecked label havoc with this collection, and its contents would take years to surface in the US and GB. Discussing Old Wave with us today is founder of the hit Yesterday & Today podcast, Wayne Kaminski - who's here to talk Ringo, Caveman, tracking down dutch imports in the early 80's, and much more. Now hear this: Hopeless, Be My Baby, In My Car.Have something to say? Prepare yourself for podcasts without frontiers - it's the Now Hear This deep dive into Peter Gabriel's seminal third solo (and third self-titled) studio effort, affectionately dubbed "Peter Gabriel 3" or "Melt". This groundbreaking gem not only cemented the solo hit-making status of the original Genesis frontman, but also established sounds that would permeate popular music throughout the 1980's (and beyond). Joining us on this journey into the wire is longtime Ryan & Paul podcast contributor Jack Faye, whose own music is is enough to make you lose your self control! Ready to shine a light on the ultimate rock'n'roll band? Well, break out the cheap stuff and get those taxes in order because Now Hear This is taking a journey into the depraved south of France to deep dive into the Rolling Stones atmospheric masterpiece: Exile On Main Street. This torn and frayed offering of drunken stomps and trademark Jagger/Richards balls-out fury is held in high esteem by most...but has it always been that way? To answer that question, Paul is joined by the incomparable musician/singer/songwriter Luther Russell (Those Pretty Wrongs, The Bootheels) to uncover the history behind this iconic album, and get some rocks off in the process. Now hear this: Loving Cup, Ventilator Blues, Tumbling Dice.Have something to say? Suit up in your green shirt and prepare for battle! At long last, Now Hear This tackles Elvis Costello with an over-sized examination of 1979's Armed Forces - Elvis's third studio LP and early breakthrough project in a career that now spans nearly five decades. Joining Paul for this discussion is none other than Chris Mercer - cofounder of the hit Take It Away: The Complete Paul McCartney Archive podcast and Declan McManus aficionado supreme. So join the big boys for a class in linguistics and venom with this unforgettable record for moderns! Now hear this: "Green Shirt," "Senior Service," "Accidents Will Happen," and "Chemistry Class."Have something to say? Annabel Jones - Libelle

2021-09-0301:43:21

Annabel Jones joins us to discuss her 2016 debut solo EP Libelle, and this five-track powerhouse is packed with emotional punch. In this career-spanning discussion, we venture from Annabel's musical beginnings in Lady and The Lost Boys, up through the harder-edged Bluebell and straight through to her most recent recordings. This defiant, bemused, truthful, human record is music to our ears. Now hear this: "Happy," "Magnetic," "Spiritual Violence," and "Normal Heights."Have something to say? The Kills - Ash and Ice

2021-08-2001:24:17

We're loyal, oh-oh, We've got the heart of a pod! And heart is certainly in abundance when we're talking about the rock'n'roll uber-combo of Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart: THE KILLS. This deep-dive into the band's 2016 studio effort Ash and Ice will take Paul and Ryan from London flats to the circus railway to Anthony Bourdain's kitchen and back again...and this raw, raunchy rock is the kind of sonic substance you curl up with on long Siberian nights. So get the vision...better yet, get ready for one of the best bands of the past 20 years to rock your world. Now hear this: "Doing it to Death," "Whirling Eye," "Hum For Your Buzz," and "Heart Of A Dog."Have something to say? Tenacious D

Tenacious D

2021-08-0601:24:49

Friendship is rare, do you know what i'm saying to you? It's in that spirit of friendship that Paul & Ryan pay tribute to the self-titled debut album of one of the greatest bands to rock your socks since the turn of the millennium: the wonderboys known as Tenacious D. The story goes that tacos and the promise of guitar lessons brought Jack Black and Kyle Gass together to form this fateful duo back in the mid-1990's, and since then Kage & Jables have graced everything from the small screen, to the the silver screen, to the screen door of Lee's house in jaw-dropping rock'n'roll fashion. Sure, Tenacious D is all in good fun...but they're also, like, an incredibly strong rock band. Seriously. Now hear this: "Lee," "Friendship," "Tribute," and "Wonderboy."Have something to say? We're dirty, sweet and we're your pod! For the season sophomore offering of NOW HEAR THIS we bring you the adventures of a man with stars in his beard, whose eye doth shine like an Egyptian ruby... Mr. Boogaloo himself - Marc Bolan! Under the band name T. Rex, Marc and his outfit of like-minded rock and roll jeepsters put some serious boogie in the bottoms of the world with their blockbuster LP Electric Warrior back in '71. Ryan and Paul will now peer into the mind of a mad magician, and our velvet hats just might start a revolution in the process. Now hear this: "Bang A Gong (Get It On)," "Mambo Sun," "Peaches," and "The Motivator."Have something to say? Now Hear This is BACK! Kicking off season 3 of the great album exchange, Ryan brings to the table the high-energy twisted tunes of Chris Ballew, Dave Dederer and Jason Finn on their self-titled debut album The Presidents of the United States of America! This raucous recording captured the hearts, minds and eardrums of the nation when it was released in the spring of 1995, driven by monster singles like "Peaches" and "Lump", coupled with memorable music videos and a high-octane spirit that epitomized the decade itself. So get on out of that buggy marsh and move into the country with Paul and Ryan as the first of 4 previously unreleased Ryan Brady episodes blasts its way into your eardrums! Now hear this: "Kitty," "Naked and Famous," "Peaches," and "Lump."Have something to say? The Cars - Heartbeat City

The Cars - Heartbeat City

2020-09-0401:14:421

Hello ... HELLO again! Holy smokes folks, we're riding the new wave with The Cars' 1984 album Heartbeat City. Grab your skinny ties, Fairlight CMI synthesizers, headless Steinberger bass guitars, and best impressions of Ric Ocasek and let's fly. Wait, no ... drive. Paul and Ryan are both big fans of The Cars and this LP represents six months of Ric, Benjamin, Elliot, Greg, and David's painstaking production guided by legend Mutt Lange which ultimately resulted in a sparkling pop masterpiece. If you like big warm synth pads, carefully crafted bass guitar riffs, tuned and toned muscular drumming, burning acrobatic electric guitar solos, and two nearly indistinguishable but powerful lead singers singing postmodern angular lyrics that paint portraits in your mind ... HELLO AGAIN! Now hear this: "Hello Again," "Drive," "You Might Think," and "Magic."Have something to say? Beck - Modern Guilt

Beck - Modern Guilt

2020-08-2101:17:50

How do you all feel about that new Cream Soda Dr. Pepper? No matter your answer, and we're not going to wait for you to give one, it doesn't matter because we're back with our regularly scheduled programming. Back with what you ask? Beck's 2008 LP Modern Guilt and we don't feel guilty about it. Ryan definitely missed the memo about this one and Paul smacks him upside the head with it. In a spiritual sense. Beck teams up with Danger Mouse on a - AHEM - modern classic. Call it one hell of a shot in the arm of 21st century paranoia. Feels as if each song is better than the last and also the next. Makes sense because it is Beck after all. Call a doctor, call a ghost, call this episode a smash win. Enjoy it. Now hear this: "Gamma Ray," "Chemtrails," and "Modern Guilt".Have something to say? Summer Jams

2020-08-0701:57:36

Surprise. Annabel and Suzannah are back again. Why, you ask? Because, they said so that's why. No, no, only kidding, they're back to discuss one of everyone's favorite things - summer songs. Much like in our Holiday Songs episode in 2019, we each compiled a list of our three favorite summer songs and created the ultimate Now Hear This Summer Jams 2020 Playlist. We road-tested this playlist and then drove right through it on this very funny episode. Before we give away any of the fun, press play and enjoy. Best enjoyed with an ice cold glass of your favorite beverage, smoked BBQ treats, the news closed and deleted on your phone, and oh wait, we're STILL waiting for those yams. Have something to say? Trick question. If The Beatles were bigger than Jesus, were they bigger or smaller than Yeezus? Before you answer, consider listening to this high energy episode on Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy from 2010. No two men should have all that power so the boys brought in Max Perenchio aka The Pelican Boy to chop it up about the writing, recording, and baffling story behind this album. Not interested in rap? Good news, the three of us are here to change your mind and open you up to the genre. Already a fan? Get ready to yell at a podcast that is absolutely not live. We spent four hours working out together and did several charitable deeds before recording this episode in a hotel room, so please pay it forward. Have you ever listened to a podcast about a pharaoh that put sissies in a sarcophagus? Now hear this: "Power," "All of the Lights," "Monster," and "Devil in a New Dress."Have something to say? (SNARE DRUM) Baaaadlaaaaands! Do you enjoy jean jackets, well-worn Telecasters, New Jersey, old-fashioned blue collar grit, patriotism, and songs about broken dads or former high school heroes? Welcome back to Now Hear This where we jump - (SNARE DRUM) HUHf! BAAAAAAAAAADLANDS! - woah now, sorry, we cannot help ourselves this episode. Extraordinarily excited to walk you through Bruce Springsteen's 1978 Darkness on the Edge of Town, a classic from start to finish. Paul, a New Jersey native, walks Ryan through an album he somehow overlooked, and maybe you did too. As John Landau said, this one is a tone poem of apocalyptic grandeur, so please press play, grab your girl or guy, your muscle car, and ride your way into the ... (SNARE) BADLANDS!! Also, will you clean up your desk before you go? The Boss is on his way up. Now hear this: "Adam Raised a Cain," "Something in the Night," "Racing in the Street," and "Prove It All Night."Have something to say? St. Vincent - Masseduction

St. Vincent - Masseduction

2020-06-2601:23:55

From New York to Los Ageless, from Sufjan Stevens to David Byrne, from Annie to St. Vincent, we're back with the very successful MASSEDUCTION album from 2017, and oh boy, this was a fun episode. Possibly one of society's top lead guitarists, songwriters, and artists, Anne Erin Clark pka St. Vincent turned in one hell of a wild electric clear chaos ride with this LP where she weaponizes the accoutrement of her monumental success with wit and ennui. Bonus alert, this episode operates almost as a mini-Wikipedia of the 2000-2020 music scene because context. That's right folks, we like new music too, but you already knew that, right? Will we change your mind on St. Vincent? Paul changed Ryan's, so maybe they'll change yours too. Then again, maybe you already love Annie, and we just talked past the sale. D'oh! Now hear this: "Masseduction," "Sugarboy," "Los Ageless," "Happy Birthday, Johnny."  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
