Maximizing Environmental Sustainability for Complex Chemical Processes - with Vineeth Ram of OLI SystemsIn this episode, Vineeth Ram discusses:Environmental Sustainability in industrial chemical processes Role of chemical process simulation in enhancing sustainabilityCarbon capture, transportation, storage and utilizationPillars of sustainabilityAsset integrity in geothermal energy productionElimination of toxic contamination from air and water Supply of lithium and other critical materials for EV Batteries.Evolution of real-time monitoring and automation for operations excellenceBelow is an abstract of this conversation:Process simulation technology is critical to enhancing sustainability – air and water quality, decarbonization, accelerating the energy transition, toxin and contamination free land and natural resources as well as resource conservation and recycling. Designing and operating equipment and processes more efficiently and minimizing unplanned downtime also contribute to sustainability. Many of the fundamental reactions and phenomena that impact environmental sustainability such as improving air and water quality, lowering carbon footprint, improving carbon capture, conserving water and expanding reuse, minimizing energy consumption, expanding renewable energy production, storage and recycling of batteries, minimizing waste, effective hazardous waste treatment and, improving environmental safety for harsh and toxic industrial environments are based on electrolyte thermodynamics and water chemistry applications. The OLI simulation technology with its comprehensive property database, modeling frameworks and software tools that have been successfully deployed at hundreds of clients is ideally suited for enhancing environmental sustainability. Its solutions are used to enhance yields and lower costs for the extraction, purification, refining, and recycling of critical materials like lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and rare earth elements used in batteries and energy storage. OLI technology is applicable to flue gas treatment in coal power plants and flue gas desulfurization in oil & gas refining processes. It is used to make carbon capture, transportation, and storage processes more efficient and sustainable in oil & gas, mining, and power generation industries. In the water treatment industry, OLI’s solutions are used to improve the efficiency of filtration processes and enhance sustainability by eliminating toxic contaminants in water and waste water treatment including desalination, brine valorization, produced water treatment and reuse. OLI technology is also used to enhance asset integrity in geothermal energy production by mitigating corrosion risk helping to make it cost competitive with other energy sources.OLI Cloud APIs enable any application to use the OLI technology to simulate complex chemical processes in real-time along with the ability to integrate third-party data and build intuitive user interfaces and dashboards that monitor applications by creating digital twins.Would you like to be a guest on The Smart City Podcast? Peachtree Corners, Georgia is a vibrant suburb of Atlanta and is one of the first cities in the U.S. to be powered by government-owned smart city connected infrastructure and 5G. The forward-thinking municipality, which is home to some of the world’s most disruptive technology developers and serves as the heart of what’s being referred to as “Silicon Orchard,” began to embrace a leadership position with regard to smart cities in America, (which includes establishing its “Curiosity Lab” incubator ecosystem) originally as an economic development initiative that has since transformed Peachtree Corners into a premier innovation hub of the southeast United States. It serves as a blueprint of how to build out a “city street of the future” and more complete smart city ecosystems in the U.S. specifically. Peachtree Corners exemplifies how to optimally create and nurture deeper partnership between the government/public sector and the private sector/technology industry/business to make the smart city vision a reality.Join Brandon Branham, CPM, Peachtree Corners' Assistant City Manager/Chief Technology Officer for an enlightening discussion on these fascinating effortsWould you like to be a guest on The Smart City Podcast? A recent discussion with Lisa Williams of OLI Systems and ARC’s Jim Frazer explored the expanding details of first principle chemistry and its applications in plant operations. This new approach uses the science that did post mortems on equipment to now perform prevention and detection of corrosion and scaling. Lisa describes a new approach in detail, one where operators are informed over a specific pressure and temperature range, that certain types of conditions will occur. As an example, precipitation of minerals coming out for scaling, when you get to a certain pressure and temperature, they're going to start to form in the pipes thus you lose capacity and you lose efficiency. Similarly, with regard to corrosion, you will know when you start to have a corrosive environment, when you start to deplete the metal inside of the piece of equipment, before you have a loss.Would you like to be a guest on The Smart City Podcast? Kevin Smith of Canvass AI discusses how his company has made AI easy-to-use so that the industrial sector can accelerate their transformation into a profitable and environmentally sustainable industry. This starts with empowering industrial workforces to leverage data themselves – not data scientists or 3rd parties. Thus the power of AI is put directly into the hands of engineers. Processes for industrial engineers to build, deploy and scale AI have been greatly simplified across their operations – so that they can augment their expertise with data-driven insights. Kevin also talks about some of the world’s largest industrial companies and how they use Canvass AI to optimize processes, reduce waste, and cut their CO2 emissions. Listen in as Ted Connell of Blue Skies AI Explores Real World Applications of Artificial Intelligence including a general discussion on the evolution and opportunities for industrial / commercial AI as well as a detailed discussion of healthcare inspection applications.A snippet of the conversation:Jim Frazer What are the challenges of AI? And perhaps even before you answer that, Ted , for those of us who might not be steeped in the technology, what really is AI? Ted Connell That's the greatest question. Because most people out there think of AI, they think of the Terminator, and Arnold Schwarzenegger going around blowing everything up. And what they were describing there is consciousness, what AI is, is math. It's not scary. It's just math. And it's like a loop. It's like plastic. And it's like electricity, AI is going to go everywhere, because it makes everything better. So, think about your brakes in your car, your ABS brakes, remember, we got ABS brakes, I can now put a couple dollars’ worth of electronics in there and make your brakes a lot better, because they're measuring how hard they're pushing in there. They're deciding when they want to push depending on what you're trying to do and how hard you're pushing your brake pedal. But we can make your brakes better. There's no consciousness in there. It's just a mathematical equation that's watching a pressure here and a pressure there and a temperature and it's doing a mathematical calculation to say what's the optimal. So that's all AI is just math trying to optimize equations.Would you like to be a guest on The Smart City Podcast?
